Chapter 5 - THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR TRAPWe left through the service exit.

Bella carried Grandma's bag.
I carried the documents.
We didn't talk until we reached the parking garage.
“Are you sure that's the same SUV?” Bella asked.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Same license plate.”
She stopped walking.
“Luke.”
“I know.”
“What are we doing?”
I looked at her.
“For the first time in my life?”
She nodded.
“I'm going to stop being useful.”
We got into the car.
I called Martin.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“Leaving the hotel.”
“Good.”
“Who is following me?”
“I don't know yet.”
“You said my father left six million dollars.”
“Yes.”
“Why would my family know about it?”
“Your father told your mother.”
“And she told Josh.”
“Most likely.”
I gripped the steering wheel.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
Martin was quiet.
“Because your father required you to reach a certain age before the trust transferred.”
“How old?”
“Thirty.”
I was thirty.
Which meant the trust had activated recently.
“Exactly three weeks ago,” Martin said.
I stared at the road.
Three weeks.
That was when Mom suddenly started calling me more often.
That was when Josh asked about my finances.
That was when Ashley became obsessed with the cruise arrangements.
Three weeks.
The timing was too perfect.
“Martin,” I said, “what does the trust actually own?”
“Three commercial buildings. A marina property. Several investment accounts.”
“Can they access it?”
“Not without you.”
“And the document?”
“Completely fraudulent.”
“Then why were they so confident?”
“Because they weren't planning to use the document in court.”
“What were they planning?”
A pause.
“To pressure you into signing another.”
I glanced at Bella.
“What kind?”
“Power of attorney.”
My stomach dropped.
Martin continued.
“Once you signed that, they could manage the trust assets temporarily.”
“How temporarily?”
“Long enough to liquidate them.”
I almost missed a red light.
Bella grabbed the dashboard.
“Luke!”
I braked.
Then laughed bitterly.
“So the cruise was a setup.”
“Yes.”
“They wanted me emotional.”
“Yes.”
“Then they would make me feel guilty.”
“Yes.”
“Then ask me to fix Josh's debt.”
“Yes.”
“And eventually get me to sign something.”
“Exactly.”
The entire plan suddenly became visible.
It was a machine.
Cruise reservation.
Family pressure.
Forced cabin switch.
Public embarrassment.
Cancellation.
Blame.
Legal threats.
Emotional chaos.
Then the final request.
Sign the paperwork.
And the terrifying part was how close it had come to working.
I looked at Bella.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“You're sure?”
She nodded.
“I thought they were just being terrible.”
I smiled.
“That part was true.”
She almost laughed.
Then my phone rang again.
Mom.
I answered.
“Luke?”
Her voice was trembling.
“Where are you?”
“Why?”
“Josh is furious.”
“That's his problem.”
“Please come back.”
“No.”
“There's something I need to tell you.”
“What?”
“It was my idea.”
I went silent.
“The cruise?”
“No.”
“The documents?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Mom started crying.
“The trust.”
Bella looked at me.
I put the phone on speaker.
Mom whispered:
“Your father never trusted Josh.”
I said nothing.
“And when he died, I promised him I would protect you.”
“By stealing from me?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because Josh found the trust papers.”
“How?”
“He went through your father's office.”
I felt sick.
Mom continued.
“He found out you were the beneficiary.”
“And then?”
“He told me if I didn't help him, he'd expose everything.”
“What everything?”
Silence.
“Mom.”
“I can't explain over the phone.”
“Try.”
“I lied to your father.”
My heart stopped.
“What did you lie about?”
She started crying harder.
“I told him Josh was his son.”
I stared at the road.
Bella's eyes widened.
“What?”
May you like
Mom whispered:
“Luke... Josh isn't your brother.”
