Chapter 2 - THE ACCOUNTNobody spoke for almost ten seconds.

Josh finally laughed.
It was the kind of laugh people use when they are buying time.
“You’re confused.”
“I don't think I am.”
He reached for my phone.
I stepped back.
“Don't.”
“You don’t understand how the refund works.”
“Then explain it.”
“It’s just an account for family expenses.”
“Who created it?”
Josh looked at Mom.
Mom looked at Ashley.
Ashley looked at the floor.
That told me everything.
“What family expenses?”
Josh rubbed his forehead.
“Why are you interrogating us?”
“Because $8,700 disappeared from my booking and appeared in an account I never authorized.”
“It didn’t disappear.”
“Then where is it?”
Nobody answered.
I opened my banking app.
The refund was real.
The destination account was real.
And it wasn't mine.
Bella moved beside me.
“Can you trace it?”
“I already know where it went.”
I showed her the screen.
The account was connected to a credit union.
Account holder:
J & A Family Ventures LLC.
Josh and Ashley.
I stared at the name.
“What is this?”
Josh swore under his breath.
Ashley stepped forward.
“It was temporary.”
“Temporary what?”
“A reimbursement structure.”
“For what?”
“For expenses.”
“What expenses?”
She didn't answer.
I looked at Mom.
“Did you know about this?”
Mom hesitated.
That hesitation was worse than a yes.
“Mom.”
She sighed.
“Josh said there were some financial complications.”
“With what?”
“The house.”
I frowned.
“What house?”
Nobody answered.
Then I saw Josh's face.
His house.
The one he had bought two years earlier.
The one I had helped him qualify for by lending him money for the down payment.
“You’re behind on the mortgage?”
“It’s being handled.”
“With my money?”
“No.”
“Then why did my cruise refund go to your company?”
Josh's jaw tightened.
“Because you canceled a family trip.”
“You stole my refund.”
“We didn't steal anything!”
Ashley snapped.
“You were going to waste the money anyway.”
I stared at her.
“Waste?”
“You made everyone pay for your decision.”
“You mean the decision to cancel the vacation I paid for?”
“That was Mom’s birthday.”
“That was my money.”
Josh stepped closer.
“Luke, listen. We were already on the ship.”
“So?”
“You stranded us.”
“You had your cabins.”
“You canceled the entire group booking.”
“And you still boarded.”
“That isn't the point!”
“Then tell me the point.”
Josh's face changed.
For one second, he looked less angry and more desperate.
Then he said:
“We needed the refund.”
The room went completely quiet.
Bella slowly turned toward him.
“You needed it for what?”
Josh looked at her.
He didn't answer.
A second later, Mom whispered:
“Josh.”
He closed his eyes.
Ashley spoke instead.
“The bank was going to foreclose.”
Bella's mouth fell open.
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
“How much?”
Josh remained silent.
“How much do you owe?”
He finally answered.
“Thirty-eight thousand.”
I stared at him.
“And the cruise refund was going toward that?”
“It was supposed to be temporary.”
“You used my money to save your house.”
“I was going to pay you back.”
“When?”
He didn't respond.
“When, Josh?”
“I don't know.”
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
I pulled up the cruise invoice.
Then the payment history.
Then the shared account.
“There's something else.”
Josh looked at me.
I turned my phone around.
Ashley had added more purchases.
Spa package.
Couples massage.
Private cabana.
Dolphin experience.
Luxury dinner upgrade.
Total:
$3,462.17
All charged to my card.
Ashley went pale.
“That was for the cruise.”
“You charged my card.”
“You told us the account was shared.”
“No. I told everyone to use it for pre-booked family activities.”
“I thought that meant—”
“You thought my card was unlimited.”
Mom interrupted.
“Luke, maybe everyone made mistakes.”
“No.”
She blinked.
“No?”
“This isn't a mistake.”
My voice sounded strangely calm.
“This is theft.”
Mom flinched.
Josh shook his head.
“You can't call it theft.”
“Why?”
“Because we're family.”
I looked at him.
“That doesn't make it less illegal.”
Nobody moved.
Then someone knocked softly on the door.
A hotel employee stood there holding an envelope.
“Mr. Bennett?”
“Yes?”
“This was delivered for you.”
I opened it.
There was no return address.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Three printed photographs.
The first showed Josh signing a document.
The second showed Ashley meeting with a bank representative.
The third showed Mom sitting at a table with them.
And beneath the photographs was one sentence:
YOUR FAMILY DIDN’T JUST TAKE YOUR CABIN. THEY WERE TRYING TO TAKE SOMETHING MUCH BIGGER.
I looked at Mom.
She went white.
Then she whispered:
“Where did you get that?”
I didn't answer.
Because a fourth photograph had fallen from the envelope.
I picked it up.
It showed my name.
On a legal document.

And beside my name was a signature.
A signature I had never written.
