Chapter 1 - THE DOORFor three seconds, nobody moved.

Then someone slammed their fist against my hotel door again.
BANG. BANG. BANG.
“Luke! Open the damn door!”
Josh.
Of course.
I glanced at Bella.
She was standing beside the bed, still clutching the passenger manifest.
Her face had gone pale.
“Don’t open it,” she whispered.
“I’m not planning to.”
Another bang.
“LUKE!”
I walked toward the peephole.
Josh stood in the hallway wearing the same white polo shirt he had packed for the cruise. Ashley was behind him, furious and frantic. Mom stood farther back, her arms crossed.
Aunt Maggie was crying.
Uncle Ron was talking loudly into his phone.
And Grandma was nowhere in sight.
I stepped away from the door.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown Number:
Mr. Bennett, this is Daniel Harper, attorney for Ashley Reynolds. You need to call me immediately regarding the financial damages resulting from your cancellation.
Bella stared at me.
“They really sent a lawyer.”
“I know.”
“What are they going to claim?”
I looked at the message again.
“Probably whatever they can.”
The problem was, I had no idea yet how much evidence they had.
Or how much evidence I had.
Josh pounded on the door again.
“You think this is funny?”
I finally spoke.
“No.”
Silence.
Then Ashley shouted.
“You ruined Mom’s birthday!”
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because six months ago, that accusation would have destroyed me.
Now it sounded absurd.
“You gave my cabin away,” I said through the door.
“That doesn’t mean you cancel everything!”
“You told me I should be flexible.”
Josh muttered something I couldn't hear.
Ashley stepped closer.
“You’re being selfish.”
I looked at Bella.
She raised one eyebrow.
Selfish.
That word was almost impressive.
For years, they had treated my money like an emergency fund with my name attached.
Car repair?
Luke would handle it.
Mom’s medical bill?
Luke would handle it.
Josh’s rent?
Luke would “help.”
Ashley’s wedding expenses?
Luke had covered the hotel deposit because Josh was “under pressure.”
And now this.
I had paid $8,700 for a family cruise celebrating Mom.
Five ocean-view cabins.
Eight excursions.
Private transfers.
Accessible boarding assistance for Grandma.
Special dining arrangements.
Everything carefully planned.
And three days before departure, they decided Ashley deserved my cabin more than I did.
I had replied:
Okay :)
They had mistaken those two words for surrender.
Josh spoke again.
“Open the door. We can figure this out.”
I almost opened it.
Then I remembered the passenger manifest.
Josh had boarded.
Ashley had boarded.
Mom had boarded.
Aunt Maggie had boarded.
Uncle Ron had boarded.
Emily had boarded.
But Bella, Grandma, and I had not.
Why?
Because our reservations had been attached to the canceled booking.
Their rooms had apparently remained active long enough for them to board.
Mine had not.
That meant something was very wrong.
“Josh,” I said.
“What?”
“Where’s Grandma?”
Silence.
I felt Bella tense beside me.
Ashley answered.
“She’s with the cruise staff.”
“No.”
“What?”
“She wasn’t on the manifest when we checked.”
“That’s because—”
Ashley stopped.
I waited.
She knew something.
“Because what?”
Nobody answered.
I opened the door.
Josh immediately stepped forward.
Bella grabbed my arm.
I ignored her.
Josh looked furious.
Ashley looked scared.
Mom looked embarrassed.
Aunt Maggie was crying.
I looked down the hallway.
At the elevator.
Then at the stairwell.
“Where is Grandma?”
Mom finally spoke.
“She stayed at the terminal.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“She refused to board,” Mom said.
“Why?”
“She said she couldn't find you.”
I stared at her.
“You left an eighty-two-year-old woman at the terminal because she was waiting for me?”
Mom folded her arms.
“She chose to stay.”
“No,” I said quietly. “You chose to leave.”
Josh stepped between us.
“You’re making this dramatic.”
I looked at him.
“Your wife took my cabin.”
“We thought you’d be fine.”
“You boarded a ship knowing Grandma was still at the terminal.”
“She had staff helping her!”
“She had me.”
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
This time, it was a message from the cruise line.
URGENT: Passenger assistance incident report attached.
I opened it.
There was one sentence that made my blood run cold.
Passenger Emily Bennett reported that Grandma was instructed not to board until “Luke’s situation” was resolved.
I looked up.
Emily was standing at the end of the hallway.
She wouldn't meet my eyes.
I said her name.
“Emily.”
She looked down.
“What does ‘Luke’s situation’ mean?”
Her lips trembled.
Before she could answer, Ashley grabbed my phone.
“What are you doing?”
I took it back.
Then another notification appeared.
A bank alert.
Refund issued: $8,700.
I stared at the number.
My cancellation refund had gone through.
Except there was another line beneath it.
Refund redirected.
My throat tightened.
“Redirected to what?”
I opened the transaction.
And saw an account name I had never seen before.
BENNETT FAMILY TRAVEL FUND.
Bella whispered:
“Luke…”
I looked at Josh.
“What's that?”
He didn't answer.
So I asked again.
“Josh. What's the Bennett Family Travel Fund?”
He stared at me.
Then, for the first time that night, he looked afraid.
And that was when I realized the cruise was not the real problem.

The real problem had started months ago.
And my family had been hiding it from me.
