Chapter 2 - The File Behind the WallCassidy followed Arthur into the hallway.

-Behind them, Brendan shouted her name.

She didn't turn.

Daniel closed the dining room doors.

Two security officers remained outside.

Diane began screaming.

Jessica was crying.

Cassidy barely heard any of it.

“Who accessed the archive?” she asked.

Arthur shook his head.

“We don't know.”

“You said the cameras went offline.”

“Three cameras. Exactly thirty-eight seconds.”

“That isn't a random outage.”

“No.”

Arthur opened his tablet.

A map appeared.

Morrison Global's private archive was housed beneath the corporate headquarters.

Most employees did not know it existed.

Neither did the board.

Only seven people had clearance.

Arthur.

Daniel.

The chief technology officer.

The founder's attorney.

Two trust administrators.

And Cassidy.

The problem was that one of the seven had been dead for eighteen months.

Arthur zoomed in.

“Someone used an old administrator key.”

Cassidy stopped.

“Whose?”

Arthur hesitated.

“Victor Morrison.”

Brendan's grandfather.

Founder of Morrison Global.

Cassidy stared at the screen.

Victor had died before she married Brendan.

To the family, he was a legend.

To Cassidy, he was the reason she owned the company.

Because Victor had left something behind.

Not money.

Control.

Three years ago, days before Cassidy's wedding, a courier had delivered a sealed envelope to her apartment.

Inside had been a letter.

Victor had written it himself.

He said the Morrison family had become careless.

They were draining the company through vanity acquisitions, private expenses, and shell companies.

He feared that one day they would consume the business they claimed to protect.

Then he wrote one sentence Cassidy had never forgotten.

I do not trust my blood to protect what I built.

He had chosen Cassidy because she had spent six months working inside the company under a false title.

She had been quiet.

Invisible.

She had listened.

She had watched.

And unlike the people around her, she had never asked what she could take.

Victor created a trust.

Cassidy became its controlling beneficiary.

On paper, the company remained connected to the Morrison family.

In reality, every crucial voting right moved through Cassidy.

She had promised Victor one thing.

She would not expose herself unless the company was threatened.

For three years, she had watched.

Until tonight.

Arthur reached the elevator.

“We should go to headquarters.”

Cassidy shook her head.

“No.”

He frowned.

“Why?”

“Because whoever accessed the archive wants me there.”

Arthur looked at her.

Cassidy understood something he didn't.

The dinner had not been spontaneous.

Diane had not humiliated her simply because she disliked her.

Brendan had not laughed by accident.

Jessica had not been invited into the family by coincidence.

Something was happening.

Cassidy turned toward Daniel.

“Lock down my residence.”

“Already done.”

“No one enters.”

Daniel nodded.

“Understood.”

Arthur glanced at her wet dress.

“You should get medical attention.”

Cassidy's expression softened for the first time.

“My daughter kicked hard when the water hit me.”

Arthur's jaw tightened.

“We can call a physician.”

“Later.”

She placed a hand against her stomach.

“She comes first.”

The elevator doors opened.

Before Cassidy stepped in, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Nothing.

Then a man's voice whispered:

“You shouldn't have activated Protocol 7.”

Cassidy said nothing.

The voice continued.

“You've made the wrong people angry.”

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“Ask your husband what happened to the original ownership papers.”

The call ended.

Arthur stared at her.

“Cassidy?”

She lowered the phone.

“Brendan knows about the papers.”

“What papers?”

“The original trust documents.”

Arthur went completely still.

“Those were sealed.”

“I know.”

“Then someone inside your family found them.”

Cassidy stared at the elevator doors.

The problem became larger.

There were only two copies of the original documents.

One was in Arthur's vault.

The other was with Cassidy.

Or so she had believed.

The elevator descended.

When the doors opened in the underground garage, Cassidy saw a black SUV waiting.

Daniel opened the rear door.

Before Cassidy entered, another message appeared.

UNKNOWN NUMBER:

You married into this family to protect the company.

You forgot they married you for the same reason.

Cassidy stared at the words.

Her blood ran cold.

Arthur read the message over her shoulder.

“That's not a threat.”

“No.”

“It sounds like a warning.”

Cassidy looked at him.

“That's worse.”

She entered the vehicle.

Daniel shut the door.

As the SUV pulled away, Cassidy looked toward the city lights.

For three years, she had believed she was playing a quiet game.

She had watched the Morrison family underestimate her.

She had let them think they were winning.

But now someone else was moving pieces across the board.

And the most frightening part was simple.

Whoever was behind it knew why Cassidy had married Brendan.

And they knew the secret she had sworn never to reveal.
