Chapter 15 - Protocol 7Three months later, Morrison Global's headquarters looked different.

The Morrison name remained on the building.

But everything else had changed.

Diane was facing criminal prosecution.

Brendan had survived the shooting.

Jessica was under protective custody.

Adrian Vale had disappeared before authorities could reach him.

And Nathaniel Ellison was still missing.

Cassidy stood on the executive floor looking down at the city.

Her daughter slept in the nursery beside the private office.

Lily stood nearby.

Arthur entered with a folder.

“It is finished.”

Cassidy turned.

“All of it?”

“The ownership transfer.”

Arthur placed the document on the table.

“The board approved the restructuring.”

Cassidy looked at the signature page.

Her name.

Then another name.

ELLISON FAMILY FOUNDATION.

Then the final beneficiary.

BABY GIRL ELLISON.

Cassidy smiled.

For the first time in years, the future didn't feel like a trap.

It felt like something she could shape.

Lily sat beside her.

“You never told me what happened that night.”

Cassidy looked at her.

“Which part?”

“The message.”

Cassidy's expression changed.

She remembered the unknown number.

Protocol 8 was never real.

But the person who wrote it is standing behind you.

She had believed someone was in the room.

There wasn't.

The message had been sent by her father.

Nathaniel later admitted it.

He wanted to stop Cassidy from triggering the transfer before she understood the inheritance.

“He was trying to protect you,” Lily said.

Cassidy shook her head.

“He was trying to control the outcome.”

“And now?”

“Now he doesn't get to decide.”

Lily smiled.

“You sound like Mom.”

Cassidy looked toward the window.

“Maybe that's not such a bad thing.”

A nurse appeared at the doorway.

“She's awake.”

Cassidy smiled.

“My daughter?”

The nurse nodded.

Cassidy entered the nursery.

The baby opened her eyes.

Tiny.

Calm.

Perfectly unaware that three powerful families had nearly destroyed each other over her future.

Cassidy lifted her gently.

“You caused a lot of trouble before you were even born.”

The baby curled her tiny fingers around Cassidy's thumb.

Lily laughed quietly.

Arthur stood in the doorway.

“There's something else.”

Cassidy looked up.

“What?”

He held out an envelope.

“No return address.”

Cassidy stared.

Another secret.

Another game.

She opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Adrian Vale.

Alive.

Standing beside Nathaniel Ellison.

And behind them was a young man Cassidy had never seen before.

Underneath the photograph:

THE FIRST HEIR WAS NOT LILY.

Cassidy's face went cold.

Lily looked over her shoulder.

“What does that mean?”

Cassidy didn't answer.

She turned the photograph over.

Three words were written on the back.

PROTOCOL 7 FAILED.

The nursery suddenly felt silent.

Arthur's phone rang.

He answered.

Then looked at Cassidy.

“Ma'am.”

She knew from his face.

“What happened?”

Arthur swallowed.

“The Morrison Global servers just came back online.”

“That shouldn't be possible.”

“They aren't using our network.”

Cassidy frowned.

“Then whose network?”

Arthur stared at the photograph.

“Someone else's.”

A second phone rang.

Then another.

Then every device in the office lit up at once.

A single message appeared across every screen.

WELCOME HOME, CASSIDY.

She looked at Lily.

Lily whispered:

“Who's doing this?”

Cassidy held her daughter closer.

She looked at the city beyond the glass.

For three years, she had believed she was hiding from a powerful family.

Then she believed she was protecting a company.

Then she believed she was protecting her child.

Now she understood the truth.

The company had never been the prize.

The trust had never been the prize.

Even the billions had never been the prize.

The real battle was over the Ellison bloodline.

And somewhere in the shadows, someone had been waiting for Cassidy's daughter to be born.

Cassidy slowly looked at the dark screen.

“Protocol 7.”

Arthur stared.

“What about it?”

Cassidy's eyes hardened.

“Reactivate it.”

Arthur hesitated.

“But the company is already under your control.”

Cassidy shook her head.

“Not this time.”

She lifted her daughter.

“This time, we're shutting down the entire system.”

Arthur understood.

His face went pale.

“Cassidy…”

She looked at him.

“Do it.”

Arthur pressed the command.

Every screen went black.

Across the world, Ellison-controlled systems began locking simultaneously.

Banks.

Satellites.

Private archives.

Investment funds.

Research laboratories.

Thousands of hidden assets.

A fortune larger than anyone at Morrison Global had imagined.

Cassidy stood in the center of the darkness with her daughter in her arms.

Then one final screen turned on.

Nathaniel Ellison appeared.

Alive.

Older.

Exhausted.

And smiling.

“Now,” he said, “we can finally tell her who she really is.”

Cassidy stared.

The camera moved closer.

Behind Nathaniel stood three people.

Adrian Vale.

Diane Morrison.

And a young man who looked exactly like Cassidy's father.

Her brother.

The child everyone had said never existed.

Nathaniel spoke one final sentence.

“Your marriage was never the betrayal, Cassidy.”

He smiled.

“It was the cover story.”

The screen went black.

And for the first time, Cassidy understood that Protocol 7 had never been an ending.

It had been an invitation.

TO BE CONTINUED.
