Chapter 12 - The Dead Man's InstructionsThe old Ellison archive was hidden beneath a bank that had closed twelve years earlier.

Cassidy, Lily, Arthur, and Daniel entered through a service tunnel.

A biometric lock waited at the end.

Lily placed her pendant against it.

The door opened.

Inside sat a single desk.

No files.

No computers.

Only a tape recorder.

Cassidy pressed play.

Her father's voice filled the room.

“Cassidy.”

She closed her eyes.

“I know you are going to hate me.”

Her father's voice continued.

“I lied to you about Lily's death.”

Cassidy gripped the edge of the desk.

“I had no choice.”

Lily began crying.

Nathaniel continued.

“Victor demanded that I give him Lily.”

Cassidy stared at her sister.

“I refused.”

A pause.

“Then he threatened the company.”

Cassidy's breathing became shallow.

Nathaniel continued.

“I created the trust to keep the company away from both families.”

Arthur looked confused.

“But why make Cassidy the beneficiary?”

The recording answered.

“Because Cassidy was the only child Victor could not control.”

Cassidy's eyes filled with tears.

Her father had chosen her.

But he had also hidden Lily.

The recording continued.

“If you are listening now, Lily has returned.”

Lily cried harder.

Nathaniel's voice softened.

“I am sorry.”

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“There is another beneficiary.”

Cassidy looked at Arthur.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“Not a person.”

A pause.

“The company itself.”

Arthur frowned.

Nathaniel explained.

Morrison Global had been built around a private intellectual property portfolio.

The true value was not its buildings, accounts, or stock.

It was a proprietary technology platform.

A platform protected by a private foundation controlled by the Ellison family.

If the bloodline trust was breached, the foundation could legally suspend the company's core licenses.

Without those licenses, Morrison Global could not legally operate.

That was Protocol 7.

Not financial destruction.

Operational shutdown.

Cassidy understood.

They didn't own the machine.

She owned the key.

Nathaniel continued.

“And Adrian Vale has the final instruction.”

Cassidy's blood ran cold.

The recording changed.

Adrian's voice appeared.

“The only way to activate the foundation is through the bloodline seal.”

Lily touched the pendant.

“That's why they want this.”

Cassidy nodded.

Then the recorder clicked again.

Nathaniel's final message began.

“If Cassidy has a child, the foundation becomes permanent.”

Cassidy's hand moved to her stomach.

“The child becomes the legal successor.”

The room went silent.

“Protect her.”

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Then a gunshot echoed through the tunnel.

Daniel pushed Cassidy down.

Another shot.

The lights died.

Footsteps approached.

A man's voice called from the darkness.

“Cassidy.”

She recognized it immediately.

Brendan.

He stepped into the room holding a gun.

Lily moved in front of Cassidy.

Brendan's eyes were wet.

“You weren't supposed to find this.”

Cassidy stared at him.

“Where is Jessica?”

“Alive.”

“Where?”

He didn't answer.

Cassidy stood slowly.

“Why are you holding a gun?”

Brendan's voice cracked.

“Because I can't let Adrian get the seal.”

“You work for him.”

“No.”

He looked at Lily.

“I never wanted any of this.”

Cassidy's eyes narrowed.

“You knew.”

“I knew enough.”

“You married me knowing I owned the company.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Brendan whispered:

“Because my father ordered me to.”

Cassidy stared.

“My father died before our wedding.”

“I know.”

Brendan swallowed.

“But Victor was still alive.”

Cassidy's heart stopped.

“You're saying Victor ordered our marriage?”

“Yes.”

Lily looked horrified.

Brendan continued.

“He told me Cassidy would save the company.”

“And you believed him?”

“I loved you.”

Cassidy almost laughed.

“Then why did you hurt me?”

Brendan looked away.

“Because Adrian told me that if I didn't, he'd kill Lily.”

Silence.

Cassidy looked at her sister.

Lily's face changed.

“He had her?”

Brendan nodded.

“For twenty-two years.”

Lily closed her eyes.

Then Brendan lowered the gun.

“I came here to end it.”

A gunshot erupted behind him.

Brendan jerked.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Cassidy screamed.

He collapsed.

Adrian stepped from the darkness.

He held a silenced pistol.

May you like

His eyes fixed on Cassidy.

“Now,” he said calmly, “give me the seal.”
