Chapter 9: The Man Who Died Twice

The coordinates led us to a place that did not exist on any modern map.

That was the first sign that we were getting close.

People who wanted to hide something did not build their secrets in obvious places.

They buried them.

They erased them.

They made sure future generations would walk right past without ever knowing what was underneath their feet.

The location was an abandoned research facility on the outskirts of the city.

No signs.

No security.

No lights.

Just a forgotten building surrounded by trees and rusted fences.

Grant stared at the structure through the windshield.

“I thought this place was destroyed.”

I turned toward him.

“You knew about it?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

That answer irritated me.

“You know a lot of things you never told me.”

Grant looked down.

“I spent years trying to forget this place.”

“What happened here?”

His expression darkened.

“My father built it.”

I looked at the building.

“For what?”

Grant took a slow breath.

“To erase people.”

The words hung in the air.

We entered through a broken side door.

Inside, the facility was frozen in time.

Old computers.

Dust-covered desks.

Files scattered across the floor.

But unlike Vault 417, this place did not feel abandoned.

It felt abandoned on purpose.

Like someone left quickly.

Like someone knew they might need to return someday.

Evelyn walked beside me quietly.

She had barely spoken since we discovered Richard might be alive.

I could see the fear in her eyes.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for our family.

“Evelyn.”

She looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

The question had been burning inside me.

“Fifteen years.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to.”

“Then why?”

She stopped walking.

“Because Richard threatened Claire.”

The answer hit me.

“What?”

“He knew Claire had discovered the truth.”

Evelyn looked around the abandoned facility.

“He told me if I came back, if I contacted you, he would hurt her.”

I clenched my fists.

“So you sacrificed yourself?”

She nodded.

“I thought keeping my children alive was more important than my own happiness.”

The anger inside me softened.

Because suddenly I understood.

She wasn’t trying to abandon us.

She was trying to protect us.

We found the first clue in an old office.

A locked drawer.

Inside was a collection of identity records.

Fake names.

Fake passports.

Fake deaths.

Hundreds of them.

Grant stared at the documents.

“This was his operation.”

“Your father?”

He nodded.

“Richard didn’t just steal land.”

He picked up a file.

“He erased people who stood in his way.”

I looked through the documents.

Families.

Business owners.

Witnesses.

People who had supposedly moved away.

People who had supposedly died.

But they weren’t gone.

They had been erased.

Their identities replaced.

Their lives destroyed.

Then I found something.

A file with my name.

My hands froze.

ROBERT VALE FAMILY

I opened it.

Inside were reports about me.

My habits.

My work.

My daily schedule.

Even photographs of Lily.

My stomach turned.

“They were watching us.”

Grant nodded.

“For years.”

I looked at him.

“And you knew?”

His silence answered.

My anger returned.

“You knew they were watching my family?”

“I suspected.”

“That’s not good enough.”

Grant looked away.

“I was trying to find the person inside the organization.”

“And you let us become targets?”

His expression tightened.

“I made mistakes.”

For the first time, I believed him.

Not because he deserved forgiveness.

But because regret was obvious in his eyes.

A noise came from upstairs.

Everyone stopped.

Footsteps.

Someone was here.

Grant immediately reached for the weapon he carried.

I looked at him.

“You brought that?”

“In my world, you learn to prepare.”

I hated that he was right.

We moved carefully toward the second floor.

The footsteps continued.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Almost like whoever was there wanted us to follow.

At the end of the hallway was a door.

The door opened by itself.

Inside was a room filled with photographs.

Thousands of photographs.

But one picture made me stop.

Claire.

A recent picture.

She was alive.

Standing beside someone.

My hands shook.

Because the person beside her was impossible.

Marcus.

The photograph was dated three days ago.

Three days.

After Marcus supposedly betrayed us.

After he locked us inside Vault 417.

After he took Lily.

I looked at Grant.

“What is this?”

He had no answer.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Marcus was never trying to hurt Claire.”

I turned.

“You knew?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Then she looked at the photograph.

“But I know my son.”

The room became silent.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice.

“Dad.”

Marcus.

My heart tightened.

“Where is Lily?”

A pause.

“She’s safe.”

“Where is Claire?”

Another pause.

“Close.”

My grip tightened.

“Why did you lie to me?”

His breathing became uneven.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”

I looked at the photograph.

“You were working with Claire.”

“Yes.”

“Then why take Lily?”

His voice became painful.

“Because Emily knew Lily had seen everything.”

I froze.

Marcus continued.

“She was going to kill Lily.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

“I took Lily because it was the only way to protect her.”

The pieces began falling into place.

Marcus wasn’t stealing Lily.

He was hiding her.

The custody papers.

The threats.

The lies.

Everything.

He had created a villain role to keep attention away from the real enemy.

But then why didn’t he tell me?

“Why didn’t you trust me?”

A long silence.

Then Marcus answered:

“Because I knew you would try to save everyone.”

I closed my eyes.

Because he was right.

“Where are you?”

Marcus hesitated.

Then:

“I’m at the old Vale estate.”

Grant’s face changed.

“What?”

Marcus continued:

“Dad, listen carefully.”

His voice became urgent.

“Richard is alive.”

I looked at the photograph.

“We know.”

“No.”

Marcus sounded terrified.

“You don’t understand.”

A pause.

“He isn’t hiding.”

The room became silent.

“He’s coming back.”

Suddenly, the lights in the facility turned on.

Every screen in the room activated.

A video appeared.

An old man sat in a chair.

His hair was gray.

His face had aged.

But the scar across his cheek was exactly the same.

Richard Vale.

The man who died twice.

The man who controlled everything from the shadows.

He looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

“Hello, Robert.”

My blood froze.

“You have spent so much time looking for answers.”

He leaned forward.

“But you never asked the most important question.”

The screen flickered.

“Why did Claire disappear?”

I stepped closer.

Richard smiled.

“Because she discovered the truth about her own family.”

The room went silent.

Then he said:

“The truth is…”

A pause.

“Claire is not my enemy.”

My heart stopped.

“Claire is my daughter.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The world seemed to collapse around me.

Claire.

My daughter.

Richard Vale’s daughter?

Impossible.

But the photograph.

The documents.

Everything.

Richard smiled from the screen.

“And now, Robert…”

His eyes became cold.

“You are finally ready to learn why Claire was chosen.”

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

My daughter’s entire life had been built on a lie.

Her identity.

Her family.

Her past.

Everything.

And somewhere out there, Claire was waiting.

But now the question had changed.

We were no longer asking:

Who kidnapped Claire?

We were asking:

May you like

Who was Claire really?
