Chapter 6: The Tunnel Beneath the Empire

The tunnel was older than the vault.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Vault 417 was built to protect secrets.

This tunnel was built to hide them.

The walls were made of old stone, covered with cracks and years of forgotten dust. Unlike the modern security system above us, this place felt ancient.

Like it had existed before Grant Vale.

Before his empire.

Before anyone knew his name.

I held the flashlight from my phone as I moved forward.

Behind me, Grant followed silently.

For the first time since I met him, he wasn’t walking like a king.

He was walking like a man trying to escape his own past.

“You knew about this tunnel?” I asked.

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

I turned around.

“You expect me to believe that?”

Grant stopped.

“You think I control everything.”

“Don’t you?”

A bitter smile appeared on his face.

“You would be surprised how often powerful people are controlled by things they cannot escape.”

I almost laughed.

A billionaire talking about being trapped.

But then I remembered something.

The fear in his eyes when Marcus locked us inside the vault.

That fear was real.

The tunnel continued for several minutes.

Every few steps, there were markings carved into the wall.

Names.

Dates.

Symbols.

I stopped when I saw one familiar name.

CARTER.

The original owners of the land.

I touched the carving.

“What is this?”

Grant looked at it.

“My father.”

His voice became quieter.

“He built this tunnel.”

“Why?”

“To move things.”

“What things?”

Grant looked ahead.

“Documents.”

I frowned.

“Evidence?”

“No.”

A pause.

“People.”

The word made my skin crawl.

“What does that mean?”

Grant didn’t answer.

And that silence told me enough.

The tunnel opened into a small underground room.

Inside was a wooden desk.

An old chair.

And a locked metal box.

The room looked untouched.

Like someone had left only yesterday.

I walked closer.

On the desk was a photograph.

A photograph of my wife.

My breath caught.

She was standing in front of this exact room.

With Claire.

But Claire was younger.

Maybe twenty years old.

And beside them…

Was Marcus.

All three of them were smiling.

A family moment.

A moment before everything broke.

I picked up the photograph.

“When was this taken?”

Grant looked at it.

“Sixteen years ago.”

My eyes narrowed.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because my wife supposedly discovered your crimes fifteen years ago.”

Grant looked away.

“She discovered them earlier than that.”

The room became silent.

I turned toward him.

“What are you saying?”

Grant walked toward the desk.

“Your wife was investigating me before the accident.”

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“Because she was protecting you.”

I stared at him.

“Protecting me?”

Grant nodded.

“She knew if you became involved, you would never stop.”

I looked at him.

He was right.

If I had known someone threatened my family, I would have gone after them.

And that was exactly why she hid it.

I opened the metal box.

Inside were several old documents.

The first page made my heart stop.

It was a list.

Names.

Hundreds of names.

People connected to properties stolen by the Vale company.

But one name caught my attention.

Claire Vale.

I froze.

My daughter’s name.

Next to it was a date.

The same day she disappeared.

I turned the page.

There was a note.

Not from Grant.

Not from Marcus.

From Claire.

“If they find this file, they will come for Lily next.”

My hands shook.

She knew.

She knew Lily was in danger.

I kept reading.

“The person I trusted most was the person who betrayed me.”

I looked at Grant.

“Who?”

He stared at the note.

“I don’t know.”

A lie.

I could see it.

“You know.”

Grant remained silent.

“Who betrayed my daughter?”

His jaw tightened.

Then he said:

“Marcus.”

The room felt colder.

I already knew.

But hearing it still hurt.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A picture.

My heart stopped.

Claire.

Alive.

She was sitting in a dark room.

Her face was bruised.

But she was alive.

Below the picture was a message.

“You found the vault. Good.”

Another message appeared.

“Now find your daughter.”

I stared.

My daughter?

I looked toward the stairs leading back to the tunnel.

“Lily.”

The word escaped my mouth.

Grant immediately noticed.

“What?”

I showed him the phone.

His expression changed.

“This isn’t about Claire anymore.”

“No.”

My voice became cold.

“It never was.”

We rushed back toward the entrance.

Every second mattered.

My mind was racing.

Where was Lily?

Who had taken her?

Marcus?

Someone working for him?

Then I remembered.

Before I left the house, Lily was sleeping.

I had asked my neighbor to check on her.

Someone I trusted.

Someone I thought was safe.

My phone rang.

This time, it was not unknown.

It was my neighbor.

I answered immediately.

“Where is Lily?”

Silence.

Too long.

“Answer me!”

The voice finally came.

But it wasn’t my neighbor.

It was Marcus.

“Dad.”

My blood went cold.

“Where is she?”

Marcus sighed.

“She’s safe.”

“You took her.”

“I had to.”

“You kidnapped your own niece.”

His voice became emotional.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

I walked faster through the tunnel.

“You don’t understand what family means.”

A pause.

Then Marcus said something I never expected.

“Dad…”

His voice cracked.

“I found Mom.”

I stopped.

“What?”

Grant froze beside me.

Marcus continued.

“She’s alive.”

The world went silent.

No.

Impossible.

My wife was dead.

For fifteen years.

“Where is she?”

Marcus breathed heavily.

“That’s the secret Claire found.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Where is my wife?”

A long silence.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Ask Grant.”

I looked at Grant.

He looked away.

And that single movement told me everything.

“You knew.”

Grant didn’t answer.

“You knew my wife was alive.”

His face became unreadable.

Finally, he spoke.

“Yes.”

My entire body went numb.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years of grief.

Fifteen years believing I had lost the woman I loved.

And this man knew.

“Why?”

Grant’s voice was quiet.

“Because she asked me to hide her.”

I stared.

“From who?”

Grant looked at me.

And his answer destroyed everything I believed.

“From Marcus.”

The call ended.

I stood frozen in the tunnel.

My son had not only betrayed Claire.

He had not only worked with Grant.

He had been hiding the biggest secret of our family.

My wife was alive.

Claire was alive.

Lily was missing.

And Marcus was the only person standing between me and the truth.

But there was something else.

Something worse.

Grant Vale, the man I believed destroyed my family…

May have been the only person protecting it.

I looked at the old tunnel ahead.

Somewhere beyond those walls was the answer.

The truth about my wife.

The truth about Claire.

The truth about Marcus.

And now, I had only one mission.

Find Lily.

Find my daughter.

And make my son explain why he destroyed everything.

Because the next time I saw Marcus…

I would not be the frightened old man he expected.

May you like

I would be the father who had nothing left to lose.
