Chapter 2: The Secret Map Beneath the Property Records

The key felt heavier than it should have.

It was only a small piece of brass, no longer than my thumb.

But as I held it in my palm, I felt the weight of everything attached to it.

Claire’s disappearance.

Lily’s fear.

Marcus’s lies.

Grant Vale’s silence.

They were all connected.

I folded the note carefully and placed it inside my jacket pocket.

Then I looked at Lily.

She was sitting quietly on the couch, holding her rabbit against her chest.

“Sweetheart,” I said gently, “when did Mommy give you this?”

Lily looked down.

“The night she disappeared.”

My heart tightened.

“Tell Grandpa everything you remember.”

She hesitated.

Children remember things adults overlook.

A sentence.

A sound.

A small detail that survives when everything else falls apart.

“She was scared.”

Lily’s voice became softer.

“But Mommy wasn’t scared for herself.”

“What was she scared of?”

She squeezed the rabbit.

“She said someone she trusted was pretending to help her.”

I felt a chill.

“Did she say who?”

Lily shook her head.

“She told me not to say names.”

“Why?”

“Because…”

She looked toward the window.

“Because bad people listen.”

I glanced around the room.

For a moment, the entire house felt different.

Like the walls had ears.

Like every shadow was hiding something.

I picked up my phone and checked the recording device hidden inside my watch.

Still working.

The truth was the only weapon I had.

And I was going to use it carefully.

That night, after Lily finally fell asleep, I returned to Claire’s room.

I had avoided entering it since she vanished.

It felt wrong.

Her perfume was still on the dresser.

Her books were still stacked beside the bed.

A half-finished cup of tea sat untouched on the nightstand.

A frozen moment of a life that had been stolen.

I opened her drawers.

Nothing.

I searched her closet.

Nothing.

Then I remembered the note.

“Follow the land.”

Not money.

Not people.

Not documents.

The land.

I walked to Claire’s desk.

She had always been obsessed with organization.

Every bill.

Every receipt.

Every important paper had a place.

I opened the bottom drawer.

Property documents.

Old contracts.

Tax records.

Most people would have ignored them.

But Claire wasn’t most people.

She knew numbers.

She knew history.

She knew that land could hide secrets longer than people could.

I pulled out every file.

One by one.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something strange.

A folder labeled:

VALE PROPERTY ARCHIVES - 1998

I froze.

The name bothered me.

Vale.

Grant Vale.

Why would Claire have old documents connected to him?

I opened the folder.

Inside were maps.

Old land surveys.

Purchase agreements.

Several pages had handwritten notes in Claire’s writing.

One sentence was underlined repeatedly.

“The ownership records are false.”

My hands tightened.

False ownership records?

I kept reading.

The documents showed a large piece of land outside the city.

A forgotten area that had once belonged to a small family company.

The company name was:

Vale Land Development.

But something was wrong.

The original ownership papers showed another name.

A different family.

A family that disappeared twenty years ago.

I turned the page.

There was a small hand-drawn symbol.

A circle.

With the number:

417

Written beside it.

My heart started beating faster.

Vault 417.

The vault Claire had mentioned.

But how did she know?

And why was she investigating Grant Vale?

The next morning, I made a decision.

I needed answers.

Not from Marcus.

Not from Grant.

From someone who knew Claire before all of this started.

Her best friend, Emily.

Emily arrived thirty minutes later.

The moment she stepped inside, she knew something was wrong.

“Where is Claire?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Her face changed.

“No…”

I nodded slowly.

“She disappeared.”

Emily covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

Then her eyes moved toward Lily.

“Is she okay?”

“She’s safe.”

I placed the property folder on the table.

“I need you to tell me the truth.”

Emily stared at the documents.

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“You found this?”

“You knew about it?”

She looked away.

That was enough of an answer.

“Emily.”

She sat down slowly.

“Claire made me promise never to tell anyone.”

“Tell me.”

“She discovered something about Grant Vale.”

“What?”

Emily took a deep breath.

“Years ago, Grant didn’t build his empire legally.”

I remained silent.

“He took properties from people who couldn’t fight back. Small families. Elderly owners. People who didn’t understand complicated contracts.”

She pointed at the folder.

“Claire found proof that one of those properties was never legally transferred.”

“The land?”

Emily nodded.

“Yes.”

“Vault 417?”

Her face went pale.

“You know about that?”

“I found the number.”

Emily looked toward the hallway where Lily was sleeping.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Claire believed there was evidence hidden there.”

“What kind of evidence?”

Emily swallowed.

“The kind that could destroy Grant Vale.”

Later that day, I returned to the property records office.

The old building smelled like dust and forgotten memories.

I spent hours searching through archived documents.

Finally, I found something.

A hidden reference.

A property transfer from twenty years ago.

The signature was Grant Vale’s.

But the witness signature caught my attention.

Because it belonged to someone else.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

I stared at the name.

My hands went numb.

Richard Vale.

Grant’s older brother.

The man everyone believed had died in a car accident twenty years ago.

But the document was signed three months after his supposed death.

Impossible.

Unless…

The death was fake.

I copied the file.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Silence.

“Hello?”

A voice finally spoke.

A woman’s voice.

Weak.

Terrified.

“Don’t trust Marcus.”

My blood froze.

“Who is this?”

The woman breathed heavily.

“They know you found the key.”

I stood up.

“Where is Claire?”

A pause.

Then:

“Closer than you think.”

The call ended.

I immediately called back.

The number no longer existed.

That evening, when I returned home, something was different.

The front door was slightly open.

I knew I had locked it.

I stepped inside slowly.

The living room was dark.

“Lily?”

No answer.

My heart raced.

I ran upstairs.

Her room was empty.

The window was open.

The curtains moved in the wind.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Then I heard a tiny voice.

“Grandpa?”

I turned.

Lily was standing behind the door.

Safe.

But crying.

I rushed to her.

“What happened?”

She pointed toward the floor.

A piece of paper was lying there.

Another message.

Another warning.

I picked it up.

Only one sentence was written.

Not Claire’s handwriting.

Someone else’s.

“Stop searching for Vault 417, or you will lose the only person who knows where Claire is.”

I looked at Lily.

Then at the message.

They were watching us.

They knew about the key.

They knew about the vault.

And now they knew I was coming for the truth.

But what they didn’t know…

Was that Claire had prepared me for this moment.

Because hidden beneath the property records…

Was another clue.

A clue that would reveal the shocking connection between Marcus and Grant Vale.

May you like

And it would prove that my own son had been lying from the beginning.
