Chapter 13: The Last Lie of Marcus Vale

Darkness swallowed the basement.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The only sound was our breathing.
Then emergency lights flickered on.
A dim red glow filled the room.
And standing at the top of the basement stairs was Marcus.
My son.
The person whose betrayal had haunted every moment of this nightmare.
The person I had blamed.
The person I had hated.
And yet…
The person who looked more terrified than anyone else.
“Dad.”
His voice was broken.
Not cold.
Not confident.
Broken.
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“Where is Lily?”
Marcus looked at her.
“She’s safe.”
Richard laughed quietly.
“Still pretending to be the hero?”
Marcus ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“I need you to listen before you decide what I deserve.”
My hands tightened.
“You have a lot to explain.”
“I know.”
He slowly walked down the stairs.
“I know I do.”
Richard watched him carefully.
Almost like he was studying a chess piece that had moved unexpectedly.
“You disappoint me, Marcus.”
Marcus looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“You disappointed yourself.”
For the first time, Richard looked genuinely surprised.
“You think you are different from me?”
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Claire.
“I know exactly what I am.”
Silence.
“I’m the person who made the biggest mistake.”
He looked at me.
“And I’m the person who spent years trying to fix it.”
I wanted to believe him.
That was the dangerous part.
A father always wants to believe his child.
Even when the evidence says otherwise.
Even when the wounds are still open.
But trust was not something Marcus could simply ask for.
He had to earn it.
“Start talking.”
Marcus nodded.
“Twenty years ago, Richard found out Claire was investigating the company.”
Claire frowned.
“I was twenty-five.”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You found the property records.”
He turned toward Richard.
“And he needed someone close to you.”
My face hardened.
“You.”
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt because he did not deny it.
“I was young.”
He looked down.
“I wanted success. I wanted respect. I wanted to prove I wasn’t the forgotten son.”
Claire’s expression softened slightly.
“Marcus…”
He shook his head.
“No.”
His voice became emotional.
“Don’t defend me.”
A pause.
“I made a choice.”
The room became silent.
Marcus continued.
“Richard gave me opportunities.”
“Money.”
“Connections.”
“Power.”
He laughed bitterly.
“And I thought I was winning.”
He looked at Claire.
“Then I discovered what he really was.”
“What happened?”
Claire asked.
Marcus swallowed.
“I found the files.”
My eyes narrowed.
“The same files?”
He nodded.
“The stolen identities. The fake deaths. The people who disappeared.”
He looked at Richard.
“I realized I wasn’t joining an empire.”
A pause.
“I was joining a machine.”
Richard smiled.
“You were always weak.”
Marcus looked at him.
“No.”
His voice became stronger.
“I was blind.”
I stepped closer.
“Then why did you keep helping him?”
Marcus looked at Lily’s empty place.
“Because I was trapped.”
“By what?”
He hesitated.
Then answered:
“By Claire.”
Everyone looked confused.
Claire froze.
“What?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Not because of anything you did.”
He took a breath.
“Because Richard threatened you.”
The room went quiet.
“He told me if I stopped cooperating, he would destroy Claire.”
Claire stared.
“He threatened to kill me?”
Marcus nodded.
“And Lily.”
My heart tightened.
“So you took Lily to protect her?”
“Yes.”
Claire looked away.
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
Marcus laughed sadly.
“Because Richard was always listening.”
Then he revealed the truth about the custody papers.
The threat.
The documents.
The cold words.
Everything.
“I knew someone was monitoring you.”
Marcus said.
“I needed Richard to believe I was taking control of Lily.”
I stared at him.
“You made everyone think you were the villain.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
His answer was simple.
“Because villains get watched.”
A pause.
“Heroes get ignored.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it explained everything.
Marcus had created a role.
A terrible one.
A role where everyone hated him.
But a role that kept attention away from Lily.
Richard suddenly laughed.
A slow, calm laugh.
“You expect them to forgive you?”
Marcus looked at him.
“No.”
“Good.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Because they shouldn’t.”
He looked at me.
“He betrayed his sister.”
He looked at Claire.
“He betrayed his father.”
Then he smiled.
“He is exactly like me.”
Marcus stared at him.
“No.”
Richard raised an eyebrow.
“You are my son.”
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s where you’re wrong.”
A pause.
“I’m Evelyn’s son.”
The room became silent.
Richard’s expression changed.
“You think blood makes family?”
Marcus looked at Claire.
“At some point, I realized something.”
He pointed toward me.
“Dad raised me.”
Then Claire.
“Claire protected me.”
Then Lily.
“And she trusted me.”
He looked back at Richard.
“You never did any of those things.”
Richard’s calm disappeared.
“You ungrateful child.”
“No.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“I’m the child who finally stopped being afraid of you.”
Then he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording device.
Everyone froze.
Richard’s face changed.
“What is that?”
Marcus smiled.
“The real reason I came here.”
He pressed a button.
A recording began playing.
Richard’s own voice filled the basement.
Not edited.
Not manipulated.
Real.
“I don’t care about the Carter family.”
“I don’t care about the people who disappear.”
“The only thing that matters is control.”
Richard’s face went pale.
“No.”
The recording continued.
Richard admitting everything.
The stolen properties.
The fake identities.
The threats.
Everything.
The truth.
The real truth.
I looked at Marcus.
“When did you get this?”
He answered quietly.
“The night Claire disappeared.”
Claire’s eyes widened.
“You had it?”
Marcus nodded.
“I found it after Richard thought he had destroyed all copies.”
“Then why didn’t you reveal it?”
Marcus looked at Lily.
“Because I needed one more thing.”
“What?”
He looked at Claire.
“You.”
Everyone was silent.
Marcus continued.
“Richard’s biggest weakness was always believing he controlled everyone.”
A pause.
“He never imagined the people closest to him were preparing for the moment he fell.”
Suddenly, the basement door opened.
Emily stood there.
But this time…
She was not holding a weapon.
She was holding a folder.
“The evidence from Vault 417.”
Richard turned.
“You.”
Emily smiled.
“Yes.”
She walked inside.
“The woman you thought you owned.”
Richard stared.
“How long?”
Emily placed the folder on the table.
“Twenty years.”
The room went silent.
“I was never your servant.”
She looked at Claire.
“I was your mother’s friend.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Emily…”
“I’m sorry.”
Emily’s voice cracked.
“I should have told you sooner.”
She looked at Lily.
“I should have protected her better.”
For the first time, Richard Vale was surrounded.
No money.
No power.
No people willing to obey him.
Only the truth.
And truth was the one thing he could never control.
But then…
Richard smiled.
Everyone stopped.
Because that smile was familiar.
The same smile Lily described.
The smile he wore when he was angry.
“You all think this is over.”
Nobody answered.
Richard looked at Claire.
“You still don’t know the final secret.”
Claire frowned.
“What secret?”
Richard looked at me.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at Marcus.
“The truth about Robert.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Richard smiled.
“You found out who Claire’s father was.”
A pause.
“But you never asked why Robert was chosen to raise her.”
The room became silent.
Richard continued:
“Because Robert…”
He stepped closer.
“Was never as ordinary as you thought.”
Nobody spoke.
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
My entire life.
My marriage.
My children.
Everything.
Was there another secret?
Another lie?
Richard smiled.
“And now…”
He looked toward the door.
“You are finally ready to learn the last truth.”
The lights flickered.
And somewhere upstairs…
A phone began ringing.
My phone.
The screen showed one name.
Claire.
But Claire was standing right in front of me.
Everyone looked at the phone.
Then at Claire.
Because whoever was calling…
May you like
Was someone pretending to be my daughter.
