Chapter 7 - The underground room became unbearably quiet.I stared at Elena.

“You killed someone.”

She nodded.

“Who?”

“My father.”

Daniel swore.

Victor looked down.

I felt the world shift.

“Your father?”

Elena's voice trembled.

“I thought he was going to kill Harper.”

“And?”

“He came to our house.”

“When?”

“The night I disappeared.”

I remembered that night.

The rain.

The phone call.

The crash.

The police.

But suddenly I remembered something else.

Blood.

There had been blood on Elena's coat.

I'd assumed it was from the accident.

Maybe it wasn't.

“You killed him?”

“Yes.”

“Then who is alive?”

“I don't know.”

My father.

Daniel.

Elena.

Victor.

Dead people were apparently becoming an Ashford family tradition.

Daniel paced.

“If Elena killed Arthur Ashford, then the man we buried
”

“Wasn't him,” Victor said.

I looked at both.

“You're telling me my father was replaced.”

Victor nodded.

“Black Crown used doubles.”

“For what?”

“To make deaths believable.”

I remembered the funeral.

The closed casket.

The medical examiner's confidence.

The photographs of my father afterward.

Maybe none of it had been real.

Elena touched my hand.

“I tried to tell you.”

“When?”

“Before the crash.”

“You never got the chance.”

“You didn't answer.”

“What?”

“I called you six times that night.”

I stared.

“I only remember one.”

“Because someone redirected the others.”

My phone felt heavy.

I suddenly understood the Miami betrayal.

The route.

The warehouse.

The six men.

Someone had been controlling information for years.

This wasn't a single traitor.

It was a system.

I looked at Victor.

“Who is running it?”

He didn't answer.

Claire did.

“Isabel.”

Daniel looked at her.

“She's alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Claire shook her head.

“Not geographically.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“She stopped operating physically.”

“How?”

“She created a network of identities.”

“Copies?”

“People who speak for her, act for her, move money for her.”

Elena added quietly:

“She doesn't need a body.”

My phone rang.

Unknown.

I answered.

“Marcus.”

A woman's voice.

Elegant.

Calm.

“Isabel?”

She laughed.

“I wondered how long it would take.”

“Where's my daughter?”

“Safe.”

“Bring her home.”

“I will.”

“When?”

“When you give me something.”

“What?”

“Your company.”

I laughed.

“You think I'd give you my empire for my daughter?”

“No.”

A pause.

“You'll give it to me because your children aren't your only leverage.”

The call ended.

An email arrived.

One attachment.

A bank account.

I opened it.

It contained transactions from Ashford Global.

Billions.

Money moved to dozens of countries.

Every transaction authorized by me.

I stared.

“I didn't do this.”

Victor looked over my shoulder.

“I know.”

“No.”

His face tightened.

“You signed those.”

I turned.

“What?”

He pointed.

Digital signature.

My credentials.

My biometric authorization.

My face verification.

All real.

Impossible.

I whispered:

“Someone has a copy of me.”

Claire nodded.

“Your father anticipated this.”

“What did he build?”

“A behavioral model.”

“Of me?”

“Yes.”

“Based on everything.”

“Your voice. Your movements. Your decisions.”

I felt sick.

“A digital double.”

Claire said nothing.

The phone rang again.

This time video.

I answered.

My own face appeared on screen.

My voice.

My expression.

My movements.

Me.

Except I hadn't made the recording.

The digital Marcus looked into the camera.

Then spoke.

“Give me your company.”

My blood ran cold.

The fake me smiled.

“Or Harper dies.”

Elena turned away.

Daniel cursed.

Then the image changed.

A live feed.

Harper stood beside a window.

Behind her was a man.

He removed his mask.

Victor.

Again.

I turned slowly.

Victor was standing beside me.

Same face.

Same clothes.

Same wound.

The man in the video raised his hand.

The real Victor whispered:

“That's impossible.”

The fake Victor looked at Harper.

“Tell your father what you remembered.”

Harper stared directly at the camera.

Then she spoke clearly.

“I remember who pushed Mommy's car.”

The video froze.

I looked at Elena.

“Who?”

She closed her eyes.

Harper whispered:

“Daddy.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Daniel stared at me.

Elena looked shattered.

“The night of the crash
”

She swallowed.

“Someone wearing your face pushed my car into the ravine.”

My entire body went cold.

“You're saying
”

“Yes.”

“Someone impersonated me.”

She nodded.

“And I thought you tried to kill me.”

Suddenly every piece fit.

The calls.

The crash.

The betrayal.

The missing years.

The false death.

My wife had disappeared because she believed I had murdered her.

And someone had spent three years making sure she never learned the truth.

The phone buzzed.

A new message.

COME TO THE HOUSE ALONE.

Then another.

BRING ELENA.

And a final one.

LEAVE HARPER WHERE SHE IS.

I stared at the screen.

That message terrified me more than the others.

Because whoever was controlling this knew one thing I hadn't yet realized.

May you like

Harper wasn't merely a hostage.

She was the key.
