Chapter 11 - We found Ava in the east corridor.Arthur was gone.

No broken glass.

No blood.

No sign he'd ever been there.

Except the photograph.

I held it in my hand.

Elena stared.

“That was taken tonight.”

“How do you know?”

“The dress.”

Ava was wearing it now.

My stomach tightened.

Someone had access to every camera in the house.

Every room.

Every daughter.

Every movement.

I called her.

No answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then the lights went out.

Again.

This time I smiled.

“What?”

Victor looked at me.

“You're smiling.”

“Because I finally understand.”

I took out my phone.

“Someone wants us afraid.”

“So?”

“So they need us to make predictable decisions.”

I looked at Claire.

“You said Harper remembers patterns.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Harper.

“Then she's our advantage.”

Harper nodded.

She wasn't crying.

She looked strangely calm.

“Who is Ava with?”

Harper closed her eyes.

“Someone pretending.”

“Who?”

She opened them.

“Grandpa.”

Elena inhaled sharply.

We moved toward the east wing.

The corridor was empty.

Then Ava appeared.

Running.

“Dad!”

I caught her.

“Where were you?”

“He took me.”

“Who?”

“Grandpa.”

My heart pounded.

“Where?”

“The office.”

“What did he want?”

Ava looked at Elena.

“You.”

Elena froze.

“He said Mom knows where the key is.”

“What key?”

Ava reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a brass key.

The same crest.

My father's initials.

I recognized it immediately.

The key Claire had given me.

Except this one was different.

There were two.

I turned to Claire.

“You knew.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Victor stared at the keys.

“One opens the archive.”

“What does the other open?”

“The vault.”

“Which vault?”

He looked toward the floor.

“The original Black Crown vault.”

We descended beneath the house.

The deeper we went, the older the walls became.

At the bottom was a massive steel door.

Two keyholes.

One on each side.

We inserted the keys.

The door opened.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Not financial.

Not political.

Medical.

Genetic.

Birth records.

Family histories.

I opened the first file.

ASHFORD.

Then ASHFORD.

Then BENNETT.

Then VOSS.

Then dozens more.

All connected.

Claire's face changed.

“What?”

She saw her own surname.

“This can't be.”

Victor pulled out a document.

“Look.”

Claire took it.

Her hands shook.

It was her birth certificate.

But the father's name wasn't Bennett.

It was Arthur Ashford.

Claire stared.

“No.”

Elena looked stunned.

“Claire is Arthur's daughter.”

I looked at Claire.

She stepped backward.

“I never knew.”

Victor's voice softened.

“You weren't supposed to.”

A final file sat at the bottom.

H4.

Harper Ashford.

I opened it.

The first page was blank.

The second contained one sentence.

THE CHILD WAS NOT BORN BY ACCIDENT.

I looked at Elena.

She wouldn't meet my eyes.

“What does that mean?”

She whispered:

“I was pregnant because they wanted me to be.”

I felt ice in my veins.

“Explain.”

“Elena was part of a genetic project,” Claire said.

“No.”

“She was selected.”

“For what?”

“Compatibility.”

“With what?”

Claire turned the page.

My blood ran cold.

Subject H4: genetic convergence between Ashford and Voss lines.

Elena cried.

“I tried to stop it.”

“You didn't.”

“I loved you.”

“Then why?”

“Because I didn't know.”

Victor pulled another file.

“Marcus.”

I took it.

My own genetic profile.

Then Daniel's.

Then Harper's.

The conclusion was unmistakable.

Harper had inherited a rare combination from all three lines.

Ashford.

Voss.

And Elena's family.

“She wasn't supposed to be a child.”

Claire whispered.

“She was supposed to be an access key.”

I looked at Harper.

She was staring at the vault wall.

Then she walked toward a small door.

“Harper?”

She placed her hand against it.

The lock opened.

No key.

No code.

Just her touch.

The room beyond contained a chair.

A microphone.

And a screen.

The screen activated.

A woman appeared.

Isabel.

“You finally found it.”

I raised my weapon.

“Where are you?”

She ignored me.

“Harper, do you remember the first time you met me?”

Harper nodded.

“Yes.”

I froze.

“Harper?”

Isabel smiled.

“You were three.”

I turned to Elena.

“You knew.”

Elena whispered:

“I suspected.”

The screen changed.

A video of Harper as a toddler.

Speaking perfectly.

Not babbling.

Not stumbling.

Perfect sentences.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Mommy says never trust the lady with the silver ring.”

My skin prickled.

I looked at Isabel.

The woman had a silver ring.

But then Harper spoke again.

“Daddy is coming.”

In the video, a younger version of me entered.

He picked her up.

The footage stopped.

Isabel leaned closer.

“Marcus.”

I stared.

“You have twelve hours.”

“You said that already.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“This time, you have twelve minutes.”

The vault doors slammed shut.

A timer appeared.

12:00.

11:59.

11:58.

Victor looked at the ceiling.

“Gas.”

Claire ran to the controls.

“She's flooding the vault.”

Elena grabbed Harper.

A red light flashed.

LOCKDOWN COMPLETE.

My daughters screamed.

The timer dropped.

Ten minutes.

Nine.

Then Harper walked to the microphone.

She pressed it.

And spoke directly to Isabel.

“You don't know everything.”

The countdown stopped.

Everyone froze.

Isabel's face appeared on the screen.

“What did you say?”

Harper smiled.

A tiny, terrifying smile.

May you like

“I remember where you hid Mommy.”

Isabel's face went white.
