Chapter 14 - The original vault was beneath an abandoned military facility outside the city.Harper led us there.

I still didn't understand how a six-year-old knew the location.

But we'd learned something important.

Never assume what Harper remembers is impossible.

The facility had been abandoned twenty years earlier.

No power.

No guards.

No cameras.

At least, that was what it appeared to be.

The entrance opened when Harper placed her hand against a biometric panel.

Claire stared.

“This system is older than her.”

Victor whispered:

“They built it for her.”

We entered.

The corridor stretched underground.

At the end was a massive circular door.

Three symbols were carved into it.

Ashford.

Voss.

Bennett.

Claire looked at me.

“My family.”

“Open it.”

She touched the panel.

Nothing.

Harper stepped forward.

The door opened.

Inside was a command center.

Hundreds of screens.

Maps.

Bank accounts.

Names.

Every major institution.

Every company.

Every government.

Black Crown had been watching everything.

Then I saw Ava.

On one screen.

She was alive.

Tied to a chair.

Arthur stood beside her.

But Arthur was supposed to be dying.

He turned toward the camera.

“Marcus.”

I stepped closer.

“Let her go.”

“I will.”

“When?”

“When the vault closes.”

“What?”

“You need to choose.”

A second screen showed Harper.

A third showed Elena.

A fourth showed Daniel.

All separated.

A timer appeared.

Thirty minutes.

“What happens when it reaches zero?”

Arthur smiled.

“Every encrypted Black Crown archive becomes public.”

Claire went pale.

“Which means?”

“Chaos.”

Arthur nodded.

“Financial markets collapse. Intelligence agencies implode. Governments fall.”

I stared.

“You built a nuclear bomb.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“We built a mirror.”

“What do you want?”

“I want a successor.”

“Harper?”

“Yes.”

I looked at my daughter.

“No.”

Arthur sighed.

“You still think this is about power.”

“Isn't it?”

“No.”

He turned toward the camera.

“It's about survival.”

The screens changed.

Images of international conflicts.

Political scandals.

Corporate wars.

Assassinations.

Black Crown had manipulated all of them.

Arthur said quietly:

“We kept the world balanced.”

I laughed.

“You murdered people.”

“We prevented wars.”

“You created them.”

“Sometimes.”

His voice hardened.

“That's what power does.”

I looked at Harper.

She was staring at one screen.

“What is it?”

She pointed.

A map.

A location.

The city.

Ashford House.

A red dot beneath my study.

Then another.

Under my wife's grave.

Then another.

Under my father's grave.

All connected.

A tunnel system.

Claire understood.

“The whole family estate is connected.”

Victor nodded.

“Black Crown was never outside Ashford House.”

It had been underneath it.

For decades.

Arthur spoke again.

“Marcus.”

I looked up.

“You have fifteen minutes.”

“Choose what?”

“Harper becomes the successor.”

“Never.”

“Then Ava dies.”

I looked at Elena.

She shook her head.

“No.”

I looked at Daniel.

He understood.

“We don't choose.”

I nodded.

We had spent years playing their game.

Following their rules.

Not anymore.

I turned toward Claire.

“Can you access the system?”

She smiled.

“For the first time.”

I looked at Victor.

“Can you open the archive?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel?”

He raised his weapon.

“I know where the hostages are.”

Elena stepped beside me.

“And me?”

I looked at her.

“You stay with Harper.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She touched my face.

“I lost three years.”

Her eyes hardened.

“I'm not losing another minute.”

We split.

The vault became a battlefield.

Daniel and Victor moved toward Ava.

Claire attacked the archive.

Elena took Harper through the lower corridor.

I went for Arthur.

I found him in the central chamber.

He looked tired.

Human.

For the first time.

“You resemble your mother.”

I raised my gun.

“She hated you.”

“She loved me.”

“She feared you.”

“Those are sometimes the same thing.”

I wanted to shoot him.

But I needed answers.

“Why me?”

He sat down.

“Because you were never meant to inherit Black Crown.”

“Then what was I meant to do?”

“Destroy it.”

I frowned.

“Elena knew?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Victor?”

“Yes.”

Everyone had known except me.

Arthur smiled.

“You were the weapon they kept hidden.”

I heard footsteps.

Ava.

Daniel.

Alive.

Then Isabel appeared behind them.

She raised her weapon.

I turned.

She shot Daniel.

He fell.

Ava screamed.

I fired.

Isabel disappeared behind the doorway.

I ran to my brother.

Blood covered his shirt.

He grabbed my hand.

“Don't
”

“Stay with me.”

He smiled weakly.

“I spent my whole life trying to protect you.”

“You're going to survive.”

He shook his head.

“Listen.”

His eyes filled.

“Harper isn't the key.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She isn't the key.”

He coughed.

“She is the lock.”

The lights went out.

Every screen turned white.

Then a single sentence appeared.

SUCCESSOR ACTIVATION COMPLETE.

Harper's voice came over the speakers.

Not frightened.

Not crying.

Calm.

“Daddy?”

I looked toward the hallway.

“Yes?”

A pause.

Then:

May you like

“I remember everything.”

And every door in the vault opened.
