Chapter 5 - Everything happened at once.Marco's gun rose.

Victor lunged.
Claire grabbed Harper.
Daniel shouted.
A shot cracked through the chapel.
The bullet struck the stone pillar beside my head.
I dropped behind a pew.
âMove!â
Claire dragged Harper toward the side aisle.
Victor tackled Marco.
They crashed into the floor.
Another shot.
The sniper vanished.
I fired toward the balcony.
Nothing.
Then Elena grabbed my arm.
âThis way!â
I stared at her.
After three years of dreaming about touching her again, the moment felt wrong.
Too violent.
Too impossible.
But I followed.
We ran through a narrow corridor behind the chapel.
Daniel covered us.
âWhat the hell is happening?â
âThe entire security team has been compromised,â Elena said.
âHow many?â
âEnough.â
âWho can I trust?â
She looked at me.
âYou shouldn't trust anyone.â
We reached a stone staircase.
Elena stopped.
âYour father built tunnels underneath the chapel.â
âI didn't know.â
âYou were never supposed to.â
We descended.
The walls were lined with old photographs.
Some were of my father.
Others were of people I recognized.
Politicians.
Judges.
Executives.
And one photograph made me stop.
Harper.
Age three.
Taken outside her preschool.
I stepped closer.
âWho took this?â
Elena touched my wrist.
âBlack Crown.â
My stomach turned.
Another photograph.
Ava at fourteen.
Another.
Me.
At the office.
Sleeping.
Driving.
Meeting.
Every movement documented.
âHow long?â
âSince before Harper was born.â
My anger became something darker.
âYou knew.â
âI suspected.â
âYou left me.â
âI left because someone told me they'd kill you.â
âYou could have trusted me.â
âI did.â
Her eyes filled with tears.
âThat was the problem.â
We reached an underground chamber.
Daniel opened a steel door.
Inside were dozens of monitors.
Maps.
Documents.
Photographs.
And one enormous wall covered in names.
At the center:
ASHFORD.
Beneath it:
ELENA ASHFORD.
MARCUS ASHFORD.
AVA ASHFORD.
HARPER ASHFORD.
The final line had only one word.
SUCCESSOR.
Harper.
I turned.
âWhat is that?â
Elena looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
âBlack Crown's future.â
I stared.
âMy six-year-old daughter?â
âYour father believed your bloodline could control the network.â
âMy father was insane.â
âNo.â
Elena's voice was quiet.
âHe wasn't.â
She walked to a locked cabinet.
Inside was a file.
She handed it to me.
I opened it.
Birth records.
Financial transfers.
Medical reports.
Behavioral assessments.
Harper's name appeared on every page.
I flipped faster.
Then stopped.
One page had a handwritten note.
The child has already demonstrated anomalous recall.
Another:
Subject remembers voices after a single exposure.
Another:
Do not allow emotional attachment to disrupt conditioning.
I looked at Elena.
âWhat the hell were they doing to my daughter?â
âNothing.â
I stared.
âNothing?â
âThey were observing her.â
âThat's not observation.â
She closed her eyes.
âThey believed Harper was special.â
âWhy?â
Elena looked toward the door.
âBecause of what she remembers.â
I remembered Harper's strange words.
Claire is fixing it.
He knows Mommy.
One of them.
She hadn't spoken properly in three years.
Yet she remembered details adults had missed.
Daniel walked to the wall.
âYour daughter saw something the night your wife disappeared.â
I turned sharply.
âWhat?â
Daniel looked at me.
âShe saw who killed the man in your driveway.â
I couldn't breathe.
âWhat man?â
Elena answered.
âThe man everyone thought was your father.â
I stared at her.
âMy father died eight years ago.â
âYes.â
âDaniel died eight years ago.â
âYes.â
âThen who were we burying?â
No one spoke.
Then a monitor turned on.
Security footage.
Ashford House.
Tonight.
The camera showed Harper walking into the safe room.
A figure entered behind her.
He bent down.
Harper looked up.
Even through the grainy footage, I could see her lips moving.
The man leaned closer.
Then he removed his mask.
I saw his face.
My blood ran cold.
It was Victor.
Alive.
Standing in the footage.
But Victor was currently downstairs with Marco.
Impossible.
The screen changed.
Another angle.
Same man.
Same face.
Then the footage zoomed in.
A scar appeared behind his ear.
A tiny black mark.
Elena whispered:
âThat isn't Victor.â
âWho is it?â
She looked at me.
âYour father.â
I stared at the screen.
Then another image appeared.
A live camera feed.
Ashford House.
Someone stood in my study.
He looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
May you like
My father's voice came through the speakers.
âWelcome home, Marcus.â
