Chapter 19 - The SignatureSophia stared at Christopher.

“I don't understand.”
“Your grandmother changed the beneficiary six months before she died.”
“But why?”
“Because she realized Ryan was too visible.”
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
“You were being watched.”
“And Sophia wasn't.”
“Exactly.”
I felt betrayed.
“So I've spent all this time fighting for something that was never mine?”
Sophia stepped forward.
“I didn't know.”
“I know.”
Christopher continued.
“You were always the decoy.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
“The money was never supposed to remain under your name.”
“Then why all the documents?”
“To make Michael believe it was.”
I stared at the photograph of Grandma.
She had manipulated everyone.
Even me.
Then I noticed a detail.
The video.
The last line.
Someone in this family will choose truth over money.
It wasn't about inheritance.
It was about choice.
My phone rang.
Michael.
“Did you figure it out?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“You want Sophia.”
He laughed.
“Finally.”
“Where's my mother?”
“Waiting.”
“What happens if Sophia signs?”
“You all walk away.”
“And if she doesn't?”
“Someone dies.”
I looked at Sophia.
She nodded.
“Tell me where.”
Michael gave an address.
An abandoned courthouse outside the city.
We drove there.
Inside, the building was dark.
My mother sat at a table.
Claire stood behind her.
Ben was on the opposite side.
And Michael stood in the judge's old chambers.
“This is theatrical.”
He smiled.
“Your grandmother loved theater.”
Sophia stepped forward.
“What do you want?”
“Your signature.”
She looked at the papers.
“What happens after?”
“I get control.”
“Of the money?”
“Yes.”
“And Ryan?”
“He gets nothing.”
I stepped forward.
“That was always your plan.”
“Yes.”
Michael looked at me.
“But you were useful.”
My mother shouted:
“Leave him alone!”
Michael turned.
“You still protect him.”
“Of course.”
He smiled.
“Then watch carefully.”
He placed the contract in front of Sophia.
She looked at me.
I shook my head.
“No.”
She whispered:
“I know.”
Then she signed.
Michael smiled.
He reached for the pages.
And suddenly…
The courthouse doors burst open.
Police flooded the room.
Michael spun around.
Detective Harris shouted:
“Don't move!”
Michael raised his hands.
I looked at Christopher.
He smiled faintly.
“Your grandmother had one more trick.”
“What?”
Christopher pointed to the contract.
“That's not the real trust.”
Michael stared at the papers.
“What?”
Sophia stood.
“I signed a decoy.”
Michael looked at her.
Then at me.
“What did you do?”
Sophia smiled.
“Bought us time.”
The detective seized him.
Michael struggled.
“No!”
He screamed.
“Where's the real contract?”
Christopher answered:
“With the person you never considered.”
Michael looked around.
“Who?”
My mother stood.
She held a file.
“Me.”
Michael's face went pale.
She opened it.
Inside was a notarized statement.
“My confession,” she said.
“And yours.”
Michael froze.
“I recorded everything you said.”
The detective took the device.
Michael's eyes changed.
“You…”
My mother looked at him.
“For twenty years, I was afraid.”
May you like
She closed the file.
“Not anymore.”
