Chapter 11 - The ConfessionMy mother's hands shook.

“What confession?”

Daniel answered:

“The one you wrote twenty years ago.”

“I never wrote one.”

“You did.”

“No.”

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He removed a folded paper.

He handed it to me.

It was in my mother's handwriting.

I read the first line.

I helped Daniel move the money.

My mother covered her face.

“Ryan, please…”

I kept reading.

I knew Claire was alive.

Claire closed her eyes.

I knew Daniel planned to disappear.

I lied about his death.

I helped transfer the funds.

Then the final paragraph:

I did it because Evelyn threatened to expose me unless I helped protect Ryan.

I looked at my mother.

“Is this real?”

“Yes.”

Her voice was barely audible.

“But I didn't understand the entire plan.”

Daniel spoke.

“You didn't need to.”

My mother looked at him.

“I loved you.”

“You loved the man you thought I was.”

“I still did.”

“I know.”

I folded the paper.

“What happens if she signs?”

Christopher answered.

“The trust unlocks.”

“Then sign it.”

My mother looked at me.

“Ryan…”

“You've been carrying this for twenty years.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You don't have to anymore.”

She started crying.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

“She can't sign yet.”

“Why?”

“Because someone else must sign first.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked at Ben.

Ben stared back.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“What do I have to sign?”

Daniel said:

“An admission that you knowingly took property you knew was not yours.”

Ben laughed.

“You're insane.”

“No.”

Daniel pulled out the deed.

Ben's deed.

Attached to it was a second page.

Ben read it.

His face drained.

“What is this?”

Christopher took the paper.

His eyes widened.

“It’s a confession clause.”

“What does it say?”

He looked at me.

“By claiming the property, Ben accepted liability for every debt and penalty attached to the trust.”

Ben stepped backward.

“How much?”

Christopher answered:

“Approximately thirty-eight million.”

Ben stared at me.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You knew!”

“No!”

He lunged toward Daniel.

The detective stepped between them.

Ben collapsed.

“This can't be happening.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Your grandmother warned you.”

Ben looked at me.

“Help me.”

I stared at him.

“You tried to throw my mother out of her home.”

“I was wrong.”

“You called the sheriff.”

“I was desperate.”

“You humiliated her.”

“I'll fix it.”

I shook my head.

“You should have thought before you stole.”

Ben's eyes filled with panic.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“What happens if I don't sign?”

Daniel smiled.

“Then the trust doesn't release.”

“And?”

“You remain responsible for the debt.”

Ben went pale.

“Forever?”

“Yes.”

The detective moved to arrest him for the fraudulent filings connected to the property.

As they led him away, he shouted:

“Ryan!”

I looked back.

“You think you've won?”

I stopped.

Ben smiled through his tears.

“You haven't.”

May you like

He lowered his voice.

“Because the trust has another beneficiary.”
