Chapter 17 - Twenty-Seven BoxesThe warehouse was filled with the smell of dust, gasoline, and old money.

Twenty-seven boxes sat stacked against the wall.
Inside were bundles of cash.
Fake identities.
Passports.
Photographs.
And a file with my name on it.
Ben stood beside my mother.
He looked exhausted.
“What happened?” I asked.
He raised his hands.
“I'm not the enemy.”
My mother nodded.
“He saved me.”
I didn't trust him.
“Why?”
Ben laughed.
“Because Michael was going to kill both of us.”
I looked at the boxes.
“What's all this?”
“Emergency fund.”
“For who?”
“Your family.”
“My family stole this.”
“No.”
Ben pointed to a label.
“These are assets your grandmother recovered.”
“Then why hide them?”
“Because she knew someone would come looking.”
“Michael?”
“Among others.”
I looked at the passports.
Every passport had my photograph.
Different names.
Different countries.
“What is this?”
Ben looked at me.
“Your grandmother had an escape plan.”
“For me?”
“For all of us.”
My mother whispered:
“She wanted you out if things went wrong.”
I opened the file.
Inside was a list of dates.
My childhood.
My school.
My first job.
Every major event.
Someone had been monitoring me since birth.
At the bottom of the page was a recent date.
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow's date.
Next to it:
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
“What transfer?”
Nobody answered.
Ben looked toward the warehouse door.
“That's why Michael has your mother.”
“What?”
“He needs your signature.”
“For the trust.”
“No.”
Ben shook his head.
“He needs you to authorize a transfer.”
“To where?”
“An offshore account.”
“How much?”
He looked at me.
“Everything.”
I felt sick.
“Thirty-one million?”
“More.”
“How much?”
Ben whispered:
“Forty-eight million.”
Silence.
“What?”
“Your grandmother's real holdings were forty-eight million.”
Christopher appeared behind us.
He had come alone.
Ben saw him.
His face darkened.
“You.”
Christopher stopped.
“You knew.”
Christopher nodded.
Ben pointed at him.
“You're the one who moved the money.”
Christopher didn't deny it.
“I was forced.”
“By Michael?”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“By Evelyn.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“Because she wanted the money out of the country before she died.”
“Why?”
“To protect you.”
I looked at my mother.
She looked confused.
Christopher continued:
“Michael wasn't trying to steal the trust.”
“Then what?”
“He was trying to prevent it from activating.”
“Why?”
“Because activation exposes the original crime.”
“What original crime?”
Christopher opened his briefcase.
He removed an old police report.
I read it.
My father's name.
My uncle's name.
My grandmother's name.
And one more.
A federal investigator.
The report described a planned money-laundering operation.
The mastermind was listed as:
Michael Miller.
Ben stared.
“My father?”
Christopher nodded.
“He never died.”
Daniel entered the warehouse.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked at the report.
“Michael wasn't the mastermind.”
“Then who?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Your grandmother.”
I couldn't speak.
“She created the entire structure.”
“Why would she?”
“To catch the people inside it.”
I looked at the boxes.
Then at my mother.
Then at the money.
And finally at Ben.
“Then what's Michael after?”
Daniel answered:
“The one thing Evelyn never accounted for.”
May you like
“What?”
“Revenge.”
