Chapter 18 - The Last GameWe returned to Christopher's office.

Every piece of the puzzle seemed connected.
Yet the picture remained impossible.
Grandma had built a financial trap.
My father had infiltrated it.
Claire had disappeared.
My mother had lied.
Ben had triggered the final clause.
And Michael wanted control of everything.
But one question remained.
Why me?
Christopher finally answered.
“Because you're the only beneficiary Michael can't legally bypass.”
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn structured the trust around your identity.”
“My identity?”
“Yes.”
He placed a document on the table.
It contained my fingerprints.
My signature.
My birth records.
A genetic verification clause.
“She knew someone might impersonate you.”
I stared.
“So nobody else can authorize the transfer.”
“Correct.”
“Then why kidnap Mom?”
“Pressure.”
“She wants me to sign.”
“No.”
Christopher's expression was grim.
“He wants you to volunteer.”
I understood.
“If I sign under threat, the transfer can be challenged.”
“Exactly.”
“So he needs me to believe I’m choosing.”
“That’s why he spent years manipulating everyone around you.”
I felt sick.
“How long?”
“Since you were twelve.”
I remembered every strange event.
The anonymous gifts.
The unexplained phone calls.
The people who suddenly disappeared.
The jobs Grandma had pushed me toward.
The school she insisted I attend.
My entire life felt manufactured.
My phone rang.
Michael.
I answered.
“Where are you?”
“Close.”
“What do you want?”
“What your grandmother wanted.”
“Which is?”
“To see whether you choose family or money.”
I clenched my jaw.
“You kidnapped my mother.”
“I borrowed her.”
“Bring her back.”
“Come to the house.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
“With the ledger?”
“Yes.”
“What's waiting for me?”
“A choice.”
The call ended.
I looked at Christopher.
He shook his head.
“This is exactly what Evelyn wanted.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she left you another message.”
He reached into the safe.
A video file.
We played it.
Grandma appeared.
“Ryan,” she said.
“If you're watching this, then you are standing where every person in this family eventually stands.”
She smiled sadly.
“Between what you can have…”
“And what you can protect.”
She leaned closer.
“Your father will tell you he did everything for you.”
“He did.”
“He was wrong.”
“He loved me.”
“He loved the idea of being your father.”
I felt my eyes burn.
Grandma continued.
“Your mother will tell you she was afraid.”
“She was.”
“She was.”
“But fear is still a choice.”
My mother cried silently.
Grandma's expression hardened.
“Ben will tell you he didn't know.”
“He didn't.”
“He knew enough.”
The screen paused.
Then she looked directly into the camera.
“And Christopher will tell you he followed my orders.”
I stared at him.
Grandma smiled.
“He didn't.”
The video ended.
Silence.
I looked at Christopher.
“What did you do?”
He sat down.
“I changed the trust.”
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn asked me to.”
“You just said she was telling the truth.”
“She was.”
“So what did you change?”
He whispered:
“The final beneficiary.”
“Who is it?”
He looked at Sophia.
Not me.
Sophia stood frozen.
“What?”
Christopher said:
“The trust doesn't belong to Ryan anymore.”
May you like
My heart stopped.
“It belongs to Sophia.”
