Chapter 4 - THE TOY BOATThe USB drive was smaller than David's thumbnail.

Yet it had apparently destroyed an empire.

Agent Donovan connected it to an isolated federal computer.

The screen opened.

A single folder appeared.

Labeled:

LILY.

David stared.

Maya stood several feet behind him.

Neither spoke.

The first file was a video.

David clicked it.

Lily appeared on screen.

Seven years old.

Messy blonde hair.

Wearing purple pajamas.

She held the same red toy boat.

“Hi, Mommy.”

Maya covered her mouth.

David couldn't breathe.

Lily continued.

“I found Daddy's secret thing.”

David leaned closer.

“What secret thing?”

Lily turned the camera toward a basement door.

A second later she whispered,

“Uncle Ethan comes here at night.”

The video ended.

David stared at the blank screen.

“There's more.”

He clicked the next file.

This time Lily was hiding behind a staircase.

A man's voice echoed in the background.

Ethan.

“You were never supposed to bring that here.”

Another voice answered.

Julianne.

“Relax. Nobody knows.”

David stepped backward.

“No.”

Maya didn't move.

The conversation continued.

Julianne spoke softly.

“Once the transfer clears, David signs everything.”

Ethan replied,

“And Maya?”

“She'll be gone by then.”

David looked at Maya.

Her face remained perfectly still.

The recording continued.

“Lily saw us.”

A long silence.

Then Ethan asked,

“What do we do?”

Julianne answered,

“Children forget.”

David felt cold all over.

The file stopped.

Another opened automatically.

A spreadsheet.

Payments.

Thousands of dollars.

Shell companies.

Offshore accounts.

Medical suppliers.

Names.

Dates.

And one recurring code:

PROJECT HUSH.

David whispered,

“What is Project Hush?”

Donovan appeared behind them.

“We've been trying to find that answer for six months.”

David turned.

“You knew?”

“We suspected your company was running an illegal biological program.”

He stared at her.

“You said this was about financial fraud.”

“It started there.”

She clicked another file.

A laboratory report appeared.

A pathogen.

Experimental.

Extremely dangerous.

And next to it, a list of potential exposure methods.

David stumbled backward.

“No.”

Maya closed her eyes.

Lily's name appeared on the report.

Exposure date.

Four days before her hospitalization.

David looked at Maya.

“They infected her.”

Maya whispered,

“Yes.”

His face twisted.

“Why?”

“Because she was evidence.”

David stared.

Then he noticed something.

A second name beside Lily's.

Maya Vance.

His heart stopped.

“What?”

Donovan looked at the screen.

Maya's exposure record had been scheduled for the same week.

David stared at his wife.

“You were next.”

Maya nodded.

“I was.”

“Then why didn't it happen?”

She looked at him.

“Because Lily saved me.”

David frowned.

Maya pointed at the red toy boat.

“Lily had taken the USB from your office.”

David looked confused.

“How?”

Maya answered,

“She hid it in the toy.”

Then she opened another video.

This one showed Lily running toward Maya.

“Mommy!”

The child handed her the toy boat.

“Daddy said this was important.”

Maya began crying.

David watched in horror.

On the video's final frame, Lily whispered something.

The audio was barely audible.

Maya increased the volume.

Lily's tiny voice said,

“Daddy isn't bad, Mommy.”

David's eyes filled with tears.

Then Lily added,

“But Daddy doesn't know.”

The recording ended.

David looked at Maya.

She wiped her tears.

“She believed you were innocent.”

David whispered,

“And you?”

Maya stared at him.

“I believed you were guilty.”

Then Donovan received a notification.

Her expression changed instantly.

“What?”

Maya turned.

Donovan read the message.

“Ethan Cole has disappeared.”

David stood.

“Where?”

“He left the country.”

“Destination?”

Donovan's voice became colder.

“The Bahamas.”

David's blood ran cold.

Because Ethan had not simply fled.

He had gone to the exact place where David had spent the previous fourteen days.

And according to federal intelligence…

Someone had been waiting for him there.
