Chapter 11 - THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPHMaya refused to believe it.

Not completely.
She had held Lily's casket.
She had watched the lid close.
She had heard the doctor declare the time of death.
But the photograph changed everything.
It showed Lily.
Alive.
Sitting in a white room.
Wearing the same purple pajamas from the video.
A hospital bracelet around her wrist.
The date on the photograph was yesterday.
David stared at it.
“This has to be fake.”
Maya shook her head.
“The scar.”
David looked closer.
Lily had a tiny scar beneath her left eyebrow.
A scar she received when she was four.
Only David and Maya knew about it.
The photograph was real.
Donovan, wounded but alive, sent agents to trace the source.
The image originated from a private medical facility in Switzerland.
David collapsed into a chair.
“How?”
Maya whispered,
“They switched the body.”
Silence.
“No,” David said.
“They used another child.”
Maya looked at him.
“They made us believe Lily was dead.”
David felt sick.
“Why?”
“To control you.”
Maya's eyes narrowed.
“That's the entire game.”
David understood.
They hadn't merely wanted his money.
They wanted his obedience.
His guilt.
His fear.
His grief.
His signature.
Everything had been staged around one lie.
Lily's death.
Maya stood.
“We're going to Switzerland.”
Donovan shook her head.
“You're being watched.”
“Then we go anyway.”
They traveled under federal protection.
At the facility, a doctor met them.
He looked terrified.
“Where is my daughter?”
The doctor swallowed.
“She is upstairs.”
Maya ran.
David followed.
The door opened.
A little girl turned.
Mommy?
Maya stopped.
Her knees buckled.
“Lily?”
The girl ran into her arms.
Maya sobbed.
David stood frozen.
Then Lily looked at him.
“Daddy?”
David broke.
He dropped beside them.
He held his daughter.
For the first time in weeks, he cried without shame.
“I thought you were gone.”
Lily whispered,
“I was scared.”
Maya kissed her hair.
“Who took you?”
Lily looked around.
“Uncle Ethan.”
David's heart stopped.
“But Ethan helped them.”
Lily shook her head.
“He changed his mind.”
“Why?”
She looked at David.
“Because he heard what Julianne said.”
Maya asked,
“What did she say?”
Lily whispered,
“She said Daddy must never find out.”
David's face hardened.
“Find out what?”
Lily pointed toward a drawer.
Inside was a red envelope.
David opened it.
A handwritten note.
Thomas's handwriting.
David,
If you're reading this, Lily is alive because I planned for this possibility years ago.
I knew Arthur would one day try to use her.
The only way to protect her was to make everyone believe she was dead.
David stared at the page.
Maya read over his shoulder.
There was one final sentence.
Trust no one.
Not even me.
David looked up.
“Thomas?”
The door behind them locked.
The lights shut off.
A speaker crackled.
Arthur's voice filled the room.
“You found her.”
Maya pulled Lily close.
Arthur continued.
“Now bring her to me.”
May you like
Then the entire facility erupted in alarms.
And somewhere beneath the building, explosives began counting down.
