Chapter 13 - THE LAST TRUSTThey survived the crash.

Barely.

The helicopter came down in a forest outside Zurich.

David dragged Maya from the wreckage.

Lily was unconscious.

Alive.

David carried her.

Maya followed.

They found an abandoned farmhouse before sunrise.

Inside, they discovered medical supplies.

Food.

Blankets.

And a note.

Thomas had prepared everything.

David opened the note.

“Safe house number three.”

Maya looked around.

“How many safe houses did he build?”

David answered,

“Enough to survive his own family.”

Lily woke hours later.

She looked at David.

“Daddy?”

He smiled through tears.

“I'm here.”

She touched his face.

“I knew you'd come back.”

David closed his eyes.

That sentence hurt more than any accusation.

He had failed her once.

He would never do it again.

Meanwhile, Donovan decoded the ledger.

It contained everything.

Payments.

Names.

Experiments.

Assassinations.

Bribes.

Project Hush was not merely a conspiracy.

It was an architecture of power.

And at the center was Arthur Vance.

But there was one final account.

A hidden trust.

The beneficiary:

Lily Vance.

The balance:

$18.7 billion.

David stared.

“My father left her all of it?”

“Not just money,” Donovan said.

“Then what?”

“Control of fifty-seven corporations.”

“Political networks.”

“Private intelligence contracts.”

“And every secret account tied to Project Hush.”

Maya shook her head.

“They'll kill her for it.”

Donovan nodded.

“That is why the government wants custody.”

Maya looked furious.

“They will never take her.”

Then David stood.

“We expose everything.”

Donovan frowned.

“That's not enough.”

“Why?”

“Because the people involved control the institutions that would prosecute them.”

David looked at Maya.

“Then we bypass the institutions.”

“How?”

Maya looked at the ledger.

“We go public.”

David froze.

“That could start a war.”

Maya looked at him.

“They already started one.”

She pulled the red toy boat from Lily's bag.

Inside was another compartment.

A tiny recorder.

She pressed play.

Thomas's voice.

“If you're hearing this, the final broadcast is ready.”

David stared.

“What broadcast?”

Thomas continued.

“Everything Project Hush knows about every powerful person involved.”

Maya's eyes widened.

“It's all there.”

A countdown appeared on the recorder.

24:00:00.

Twenty-four hours.

David whispered,

“What happens when it reaches zero?”

Thomas answered through the recording.

“The files become public.”

David looked at Maya.

“The whole world will know.”

“Yes.”

“But Dad will stop it.”

Thomas's voice became quieter.

“No.”

David frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Arthur isn't the mastermind.”

Silence.

Thomas said,

“I'm sorry, David.”

“Your mother is.”

David froze.

“My mother died.”

Thomas laughed softly.

“She never did.”

The recording ended.

David stared at the screen.

Maya whispered,

“Who is your mother?”

David could barely speak.

“I don't know.”

Donovan stepped closer.

“Actually…”

She opened a classified file.

A photograph appeared.

An elderly woman.

Still alive.

Still under federal protection.

And beside her name was one terrifying title:

DIRECTOR OF PROJECT HUSH.

David stared.

His mother.

Then the farmhouse door opened.

A woman stood outside.

Gray hair.

Black coat.

Cold eyes.

She looked directly at David.

“Hello, David.”

May you like

And smiled.

“It's time you met your real family.”
