CHAPTER 7: THE MAN I TRUSTED WAS THE ENEMY

The room stopped breathing.
Those words hung in the air.
"He is not the reason your family was destroyed."
Rafael Mendoza looked directly at Mateo Vargas.
"He is."
Nobody moved.
Not the guards.
Not my grandmother.
Not even Adrian Valdez.
Because everyone was waiting for Mateo's reaction.
The feared mafia boss of Ciudad de Esperanza.
The man who controlled an empire.
The man who had pulled me out of danger.
Slowly...
he lowered his weapon.
But he did not look angry.
He looked hurt.
"Aurelio..."
Mateo's voice was quiet.
"Do not believe everything you hear."
I stared at him.
My mind was a battlefield.
Everyone had a different story.
Everyone claimed they were protecting me.
Everyone said someone else was the monster.
My grandmother.
My father.
Mateo.
Adrian.
Four people.
Four versions of the truth.
And I was trapped in the middle.
I looked at Rafael.
"You knew me?"
The question surprised everyone.
My father stared at me.
His eyes filled with pain.
"I knew every day of your life."
I froze.
"What?"
He took a step forward.
"I watched you grow."
My hands tightened.
"No."
A memory appeared.
A cold park bench.
A hungry stomach.
Rain falling on my face.
All those nights when I wondered why nobody came.
"You watched?"
My voice cracked.
"You knew I was sleeping outside?"
Rafael stopped.
The guilt on his face answered before his words did.
"I couldn't come."
The anger inside me exploded.
"You couldn't?"
I laughed bitterly.
"I was twelve years old."
My voice became louder.
"I had nothing."
"I had nobody."
"And you were watching?"
My father lowered his head.
"I thought I was protecting you."
Those words.
Everyone used those words.
Protecting you.
But every time they said it...
I lost something.
"My whole life was a lie."
Nobody responded.
Because it was true.
Rafael looked at Mateo.
"You were supposed to keep him safe."
Mateo's expression darkened.
"I did."
"No."
My father shook his head.
"You kept him alive."
A pause.
"But you never gave him a life."
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because part of me knew it was true.
I looked at Mateo.
He had saved me from the river.
He had brought me here.
He had protected me from enemies.
But he never asked what I wanted.
He simply decided.
Like everyone else.
Rafael turned toward me.
"Your grandmother and Mateo made a choice twelve years ago."
"What choice?"
"They decided you had to disappear."
I frowned.
"Why?"
My father looked at Adrian.
"Because of him."
Adrian smiled.
"Finally. Someone admits it."
Everyone looked at him.
Rafael continued.
"Adrian didn't kill your family."
The room became silent.
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
Esperanza looked at Rafael.
"Rafael..."
But he continued.
"Adrian wanted power."
"He wanted control."
"But he wasn't the one who gave the order."
My eyes moved between everyone.
"Then who was?"
Rafael looked at Mateo.
The answer came slowly.
"Mateo."
The room exploded.
Guards raised their weapons.
Everyone started shouting.
"No!"
"Don Vargas!"
"Impossible!"
But Mateo didn't move.
He simply stood there.
Silent.
And that silence terrified me.
Because if it was a lie...
he would have denied it immediately.
I looked at him.
"Tell me he's lying."
Mateo stared at me.
I waited.
One second.
Two.
Five.
Finally...
he spoke.
"Your father is telling the truth."
The world disappeared.
I couldn't hear anything.
The only thing I heard was my own heartbeat.
"No..."
Mateo looked at me.
"I didn't want it to happen."
I stepped back.
"You knew."
His eyes closed.
"I knew."
"You knew my parents died."
"Yes."
"You knew I was alone."
"Yes."
"You knew where I was."
A pause.
"Yes."
I felt something break inside me.
The one person I thought had saved me...
had known my entire suffering.
And did nothing.
"Why?"
My voice was barely a whisper.
"Why?"
Mateo looked at the floor.
"Because your father asked me to."
Everyone froze.
I stared.
"What?"
Rafael closed his eyes.
Mateo continued.
"Your father knew Adrian was searching for you."
"He knew the Mendoza bloodline would never let you live normally."
"He asked me to erase you."
My breathing stopped.
"Erase me?"
Mateo nodded.
"Make the world believe Aurelio Mendoza was dead."
"Make everyone stop looking."
I looked at Rafael.
"You wanted me dead."
The pain on my father's face was unbearable.
"No."
His voice broke.
"I wanted the world to stop hunting you."
"Those are the same thing."
He had no answer.
Because maybe they were.
Suddenly, Adrian laughed.
Everyone turned.
"You see why I love watching families destroy themselves?"
His smile was cruel.
"The truth is always more painful than lies."
Mateo turned toward him.
"This isn't over."
Adrian smiled.
"No."
He looked at me.
"It's just beginning."
Then he pressed something on his phone.
The mansion lights flickered.
The security system went offline.
Every screen turned on.
Images appeared.
Old photographs.
Documents.
Videos.
My family.
My parents.
Mateo.
My grandmother.
Everyone.
Then a title appeared.
PROJECT MENDOZA: THE FINAL HEIR
My blood ran cold.
"What is that?"
Nobody answered.
Adrian looked at me.
"Your father's biggest secret."
The video began playing.
A younger Rafael appeared on screen.
Standing in a laboratory.
Not a mansion.
Not an office.
A laboratory.
Behind him were files.
Medical reports.
Pictures.
And one sentence visible on the wall:
MENDOZA HEIR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.
My stomach turned.
"What am I watching?"
Adrian smiled.
"The truth about why everyone wanted you alive."
The video showed Rafael speaking.
"If the child survives..."
He stopped.
The younger version of my father looked terrified.
"If Aurelio survives..."
The screen changed.
A file appeared.
SUBJECT: AURELIO MENDOZA
STATUS: SUCCESSFUL
I stepped backward.
"No."
Adrian whispered:
"Your family didn't create an heir."
The screen showed my childhood picture.
"Their experiment created one."
Silence.
I looked at my father.
"What did you do to me?"
Rafael looked devastated.
"I was trying to save you."
"From what?"
His answer came quietly.
"From what we made you."
A sound came from outside.
More vehicles.
More enemies.
But this time...
nobody reached for their weapons.
Because everyone in the room realized something.
The real war had never been about controlling Ciudad de Esperanza.
It had never been about money.
It had never been about power.
It was about me.
A twelve-year-old boy who thought he was nobody.
A boy who saved a stranger from a river.
A boy who discovered he was the center of a war older than his own life.
Then Adrian said the final words that changed everything.
"Welcome home, Aurelio."
May you like
He smiled.
"Your training begins tonight."
