CHAPTER 6: THE TRUTH ABOUT RAFAEL MENDOZA

The room became colder.

Not because of the rain outside.

Not because of the broken windows.

Because of one sentence.

"Ask her why your father wanted you dead."

I looked at my grandmother.

Esperanza Mendoza.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who taught me kindness.

The woman who held my hand when the world abandoned me.

And now...

the woman accused of hiding the truth.

"Grandma..."

My voice barely came out.

"Is it true?"

Esperanza didn't answer.

That was the worst answer she could have given.

Adrian Valdez smiled.

He had been waiting for this moment.

Waiting to see doubt enter my heart.

"You see, Aurelio?"

He stepped closer.

"Everyone in this room has protected you from the truth."

Mateo immediately moved between us.

"Enough."

Adrian laughed softly.

"You still think you can protect him?"

His eyes moved toward me.

"You don't even know what he is."

I frowned.

"What am I?"

Adrian's smile faded.

"That is the question your father spent his entire life trying to answer."

The room fell silent.

Esperanza looked at Mateo.

A silent conversation passed between them.

Finally, she spoke.

"Adrian is right about one thing."

My heart sank.

"Grandma..."

She closed her eyes.

"Your father was afraid of you."

I felt like the air had been taken from my lungs.

My own father.

The man I had spent my entire life imagining.

The man whose face I had never seen.

Was afraid of me.

"Why?"

Esperanza looked at the floor.

"Because of what the Mendoza bloodline represented."

I shook my head.

"I don't understand."

Mateo stepped forward.

"Your family had a tradition."

He spoke carefully.

"Every generation had someone chosen to lead."

"Chosen?"

"Not by people."

He looked at the black ring.

"By blood."

I stared at the symbol.

A symbol that had followed me my entire life.

"The Mendoza heir was trained from childhood."

"Trained to control."

"Trained to command."

"Trained to survive."

A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.

"I was sleeping on park benches."

Mateo looked at me.

"Exactly."

A strange sadness appeared in his eyes.

"Your father didn't want that life for you."

I looked at Adrian.

"But he said my father wanted me dead."

Adrian smiled.

"Because he did."

Esperanza's expression hardened.

"Enough lies."

Adrian looked at her.

"Lies?"

He laughed.

"Tell him what happened that night."

Esperanza remained silent.

"Tell him what Rafael did."

Silence.

I felt my heart pounding.

"What happened?"

My grandmother sat down.

She looked older than ever.

"Your father discovered the truth about the Mendoza inheritance."

"What truth?"

"That the heir was not simply a leader."

She looked at me.

"The heir was a weapon."

The word echoed.

Weapon.

I stepped back.

"My father wanted to stop it."

Esperanza nodded.

"He believed the only way to end the cycle was to destroy the inheritance completely."

Mateo added:

"He wanted to disappear with your mother and take you away."

I looked confused.

"Then why didn't he?"

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian did.

"Because he changed his mind."

Everyone looked at him.

Adrian smiled.

"Your father discovered something."

"What?"

"He discovered that the Mendoza heir was not chosen randomly."

My skin crawled.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian walked toward the old drawings on the wall.

He touched the picture of my family.

"Your father learned why your blood mattered."

I stared.

"Why?"

Adrian turned.

"Because the first Mendoza heir wasn't a leader."

A pause.

"He was a survivor."

I didn't understand.

Adrian continued.

"Every generation, the heir appears when the family is close to destruction."

"The heir is not born to rule."

"The heir is born to end the war."

Mateo looked at him.

"You expect him to believe that?"

Adrian smiled.

"You know it's true."

The two men stared at each other.

And suddenly I realized something.

They both knew more than they admitted.

"Stop."

My voice cut through the room.

"I don't care about your war."

Everyone looked at me.

"I don't care about your organizations."

"I don't care about being an heir."

My hands shook.

"I just wanted a normal life."

The words came out before I could stop them.

A normal life.

A home.

A family.

Someone waiting for me at the end of the day.

That's all I ever wanted.

Esperanza's eyes filled with tears.

"Aurelio..."

But I stepped away.

"No."

I looked at her.

"You made that impossible."

The pain on her face hurt me.

But I couldn't stop.

For years, I had carried the pain of being unwanted.

Now I discovered I had been wanted too much.

Everyone wanted something from me.

My name.

My blood.

My future.

But nobody asked what I wanted.

Suddenly, a loud crash came from outside.

The guards shouted.

"Attack!"

Adrian's expression changed.

Not fear.

Surprise.

"Interesting."

Mateo grabbed his weapon.

"Who is attacking?"

A guard rushed in.

"Don Vargas, we have a problem."

"What?"

The guard looked at me.

"Someone is fighting their way inside."

Mateo frowned.

"Who?"

The guard swallowed.

"He said he came for Aurelio."

Everyone reached for their weapons.

"Name."

The guard hesitated.

Then answered.

"Rafael Mendoza."

The room froze.

My heart stopped.

No.

Impossible.

My father.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man whose letter was hidden beneath my bed.

The man everyone believed disappeared.

Was here.

Alive.

Esperanza whispered:

"No..."

Adrian smiled.

For the first time all night...

he looked genuinely happy.

"Finally."

Everyone turned toward the hallway.

Footsteps approached.

Slow.

Heavy.

A man appeared at the entrance.

Older than the photograph.

Scarred.

Exhausted.

But the eyes...

The eyes were the same as mine.

He looked at me.

And tears filled his eyes.

"Aurelio..."

My entire body froze.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because the impossible had just walked into the room.

My father.

Rafael Mendoza.

The man who abandoned me.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Stood only a few meters away.

I wanted to run toward him.

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted answers.

But before I could speak...

he looked at Esperanza.

Then at Mateo.

Then at Adrian.

And finally at me.

His first words after twelve years were not an apology.

Not an explanation.

They were a warning.

"Son..."

His voice trembled.

"Whatever they tell you..."

A pause.

"Do not become like me."

The room went silent.

Then Rafael looked directly at Adrian Valdez.

And said something that made everyone freeze.

"Because he is not the reason your family was destroyed."

His eyes moved toward Mateo.

"He is."

Mateo Vargas froze.

I felt my heart stop.

The man who saved me.

The man who protected me.

May you like

The man I thought was my only ally.

Might have been the person who started everything.
