CHAPTER 14: THE MEMORY BEHIND THE DOOR

The child stood in front of me.

My child self.

A version of me I had forgotten.

He looked small.

Too small to carry the weight of everything everyone had placed on my shoulders.

Yet somehow...

he looked calm.

"Open the door."

I stared at him.

"What is behind it?"

The child smiled.

"You already know."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice became quieter.

"I don't."

The child looked sad.

"That's why you came here."

The room around us was strange.

It wasn't real.

But it wasn't a dream either.

The walls looked like my old childhood bedroom.

The same drawings.

The same wooden floor.

The same small bed.

But everything felt frozen.

Like a memory trapped in time.

I walked toward the door.

The Mendoza symbol covered its surface.

The same symbol everyone feared.

My hand reached for the handle.

And the moment I touched it...

pain exploded through my head.

Images.

Sounds.

Voices.

A baby crying.

A woman screaming.

A man shouting.

Then darkness.

I pulled my hand away.

The child looked at me.

"You're scared."

I clenched my jaw.

"I'm not."

He tilted his head.

"Yes, you are."

The honesty annoyed me.

But it was true.

I wasn't afraid of enemies.

I wasn't afraid of guns.

I wasn't afraid of people chasing me.

I was afraid of the truth.

Because every truth I had learned so far had destroyed something.

My family.

My past.

My identity.

"What if I don't want to know?"

The child looked at me.

"Then you will become what they wanted."

I froze.

"What?"

He pointed at the door.

"Everyone who hid the truth from you was afraid of what would happen if you remembered."

A pause.

"But they forgot something."

"What?"

The child smiled.

"You are not the boy they created."

The words felt familiar.

My mother's words.

I took a deep breath.

Then opened the door.

The world changed.

I was standing in a laboratory.

A child.

A baby.

Me.

I saw my parents.

My mother, Elena.

My father, Rafael.

They stood beside a group of scientists.

But they weren't smiling.

They were afraid.

A younger Sebastian Mendoza stood nearby.

"You understand what this means."

Rafael looked angry.

"No."

Sebastian looked at the baby version of me.

"He survived."

Elena held me tightly.

"He's our son."

Sebastian shook his head.

"He's more than that."

My father stepped forward.

"He is not a project."

"He is a child."

The memory shifted.

Another scene.

Years later.

I was older.

Maybe six months.

Scientists surrounded me.

Sebastian watched.

"Begin the evaluation."

My mother stood in front of them.

"No."

Everyone turned.

Elena looked furious.

"You said this was about understanding."

Sebastian remained calm.

"It is."

"No."

She shook her head.

"This is about control."

My father grabbed her hand.

"Elena."

But she continued.

"You created something you don't understand."

Sebastian's face became cold.

"We created the future."

My mother looked at me.

"No."

She whispered.

"You created a cage."

The memory changed again.

A dark room.

My father carried me.

My mother followed.

They were running.

Someone was chasing them.

My baby self was crying.

"We need to leave."

Rafael looked terrified.

Elena nodded.

"Where?"

"Anywhere."

A gunshot echoed.

They stopped.

Then...

Mateo appeared.

Younger.

Different.

Not the cold man I knew.

A friend.

He looked at my parents.

"I can get you out."

Rafael looked relieved.

Then another person appeared.

A shadow.

A voice.

"Going somewhere?"

Adrian Valdez.

The memory shook.

Everything became chaos.

My father fought.

My mother ran.

Mateo carried me.

Then...

a moment.

A single moment.

That changed everything.

Mateo stood between my parents and the attackers.

Adrian spoke.

"You know what happens if the child leaves."

Mateo looked at me.

His expression broke.

"He deserves a life."

Adrian smiled.

"Then prove it."

A gunshot.

The memory stopped.

I couldn't breathe.

"No..."

The child version of me appeared beside me.

"You remember now."

I shook my head.

"I don't."

He looked at me.

"You remember the part you wanted to forget."

The scene continued.

I saw Mateo.

Holding me.

Running.

My mother crying.

My father fighting.

Then another memory.

A room.

My grandmother.

Esperanza.

She held me.

I was older.

Maybe five years old.

She was crying.

"I am sorry."

Young me looked confused.

"Why are we leaving?"

Esperanza touched my face.

"Because everyone wants something from you."

Little me asked:

"Where is mommy?"

My grandmother froze.

Then whispered:

"She is gone."

The child version of me began crying.

Then I heard myself say:

"I don't want to be special."

The memory froze.

Those words.

My words.

From years ago.

"I just want to be Aurelio."

The room went silent.

The child beside me looked at me.

"That was the choice."

I stared.

"What choice?"

"When they asked what you wanted to become."

My breathing stopped.

A new memory appeared.

A room.

Everyone was there.

Sebastian.

Rafael.

Elena.

Esperanza.

Mateo.

A small child sat in a chair.

Me.

Sebastian spoke.

"You have a gift."

The child looked afraid.

"You can become anything."

The child shook his head.

"I don't want that."

Sebastian frowned.

"Why?"

The child answered:

"Because everyone who has power hurts people."

Silence.

Elena cried.

Rafael looked away.

The child continued:

"I don't want to be powerful."

"I want to be good."

The memory disappeared.

I stood frozen.

Because I finally understood.

The project didn't fail.

The experiment didn't fail.

They failed to understand the one thing that made me different.

I chose.

The child smiled.

"You locked away the memory because you were afraid."

I looked at him.

"Afraid of what?"

He answered:

"Afraid you would forget who you were."

The room began shaking.

The door behind us opened.

Light filled everything.

A voice called my name.

"Aurelio!"

Valentina.

I turned.

The child looked at me.

"Go."

I hesitated.

"Will I see you again?"

He smiled.

"You don't need to."

A pause.

"I was never separate from you."

Everything went white.

I woke up.

I was lying on the floor of the archive.

Everyone surrounded me.

Valentina.

Damian.

My father.

My grandmother.

Even Sebastian.

They all looked shocked.

I slowly sat up.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

Then Damian whispered:

"The system..."

He stared at me.

"It didn't awaken a weapon."

A pause.

"It awakened you."

I looked at my hands.

Nothing changed.

I was still me.

A twelve-year-old boy.

But something inside felt different.

Not stronger.

Not more powerful.

Clearer.

Then every screen turned on.

The Council appeared.

The same voice.

But this time...

there was fear.

"Aurelio Mendoza."

Everyone looked up.

The voice continued.

"Protocol failed."

A pause.

"You were supposed to awaken the heir."

The screen flickered.

"And instead..."

Silence.

"You awakened the human."

The room became still.

Then the voice changed.

No longer commanding.

No longer confident.

Afraid.

"Terminate him."

Everyone froze.

Valentina raised her weapon.

Damian stepped forward.

My father moved.

But I stood up first.

For the first time...

I wasn't being protected.

I wasn't being controlled.

I wasn't being hunted.

I chose.

I looked at the screen.

And spoke.

"No."

The lights flickered.

The entire system stopped.

Everyone stared.

Because for the first time...

the Council heard something they never expected.

The heir didn't obey.

The experiment didn't obey.

The weapon didn't obey.

Aurelio Mendoza chose.

And my choice was simple.

"I am not your heir."

May you like

A pause.

"I am your ending."
