CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET ESPERANZA BURIED

The first bullet shattered the mansion window.
Glass exploded across the room.
I froze.
For one second, I forgot how to breathe.
I had spent months sleeping on cold concrete.
I had run from thieves.
I had fought hunger.
But this was different.
This was not someone stealing my food.
This was someone trying to erase me from the world.
Mateo Vargas pushed me lower behind the marble table.
"Stay down."
His voice was no longer calm.
It was the voice of a man who had survived wars.
The guards moved through the mansion like shadows.
Weapons appeared from beneath jackets.
Phones rang.
Commands were shouted.
The peaceful silence of the Vargas estate had transformed into a battlefield in seconds.
I looked at Mateo.
"You said they were coming for you."
He didn't answer.
Another gunshot echoed.
This time closer.
Then Mateo looked at me.
"They were."
A pause.
"Until today."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
His eyes hardened.
"It means the moment you said your name, their target changed."
I stared at him.
"They want me?"
Mateo didn't respond.
He didn't need to.
The silence was enough.
A twelve-year-old boy with torn clothes had suddenly become the most hunted person in Ciudad de Esperanza.
And I didn't even know why.
A guard rushed into the room.
"Don Vargas, they breached the east entrance."
Mateo's expression turned cold.
"How many?"
"Six confirmed. Maybe more."
"Police?"
The guard hesitated.
"Not coming."
Of course.
I remembered what people said about Mateo Vargas.
The police didn't enter his territory without permission.
They feared him.
But tonight...
Someone feared him less.
Mateo grabbed a gun from the guard.
I stared.
This was the same man I pulled from the river.
The same man who looked almost dead minutes ago.
Now he looked like someone who belonged in the darkness.
"Aurelio."
I looked up.
"Yes?"
"When I tell you to run, you run."
I swallowed.
"What about you?"
A strange smile appeared on his face.
"I've survived worse."
Before I could answer, a voice echoed through the mansion.
"Mateo!"
Everyone stopped.
The voice came from the hallway.
A man's voice.
Confident.
Almost amused.
"I know you're there."
Mateo's face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
"You know him?" I whispered.
Mateo stared toward the hallway.
"Unfortunately."
The footsteps grew louder.
Slow.
Deliberate.
A man entered the room.
He wore a gray suit.
Older than Mateo.
A scar crossed the left side of his face.
But what disturbed me wasn't his appearance.
It was the way everyone reacted.
The guards tightened their grip.
Like they were looking at a monster.
The man smiled.
"After twenty years, I finally find what Esperanza hid."
His eyes moved toward me.
And smiled wider.
"There you are."
My blood turned cold.
I stepped back.
"Who are you?"
The man ignored me.
He looked at Mateo.
"You protected him."
Mateo raised the weapon.
"Leave."
The man laughed.
"You still don't understand, do you?"
He looked at me.
"The boy isn't yours to protect."
A heavy silence filled the room.
Then Mateo spoke.
"His name is Aurelio Mendoza."
The man's smile disappeared.
For the first time...
he looked nervous.
"Impossible."
Those words.
Everyone said those words.
Impossible.
Dead.
Gone.
Like I wasn't supposed to exist.
I clenched my fists.
"Why does everyone keep saying that?"
Nobody answered.
So I shouted.
"WHY?"
The room became silent.
Even the gunfire outside seemed distant.
The scarred man looked at me.
Then he said:
"Because your parents died fifteen years ago."
I froze.
"I don't have parents."
Mateo looked away.
The man's smile returned.
"Exactly."
My heart started beating faster.
"What are you talking about?"
He stepped forward.
"Esperanza Mendoza raised you because she was protecting you."
"Protecting me from what?"
His eyes became darker.
"From the people who killed your family."
The words hit harder than any punch.
My family.
Killed.
I looked at Mateo.
"Is this true?"
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
I felt something break inside me.
All my life, I believed I was abandoned.
I believed nobody wanted me.
But now I was learning something worse.
Someone had taken everything from me.
And someone had made sure I never knew why.
The scarred man took another step.
"Come with me, Aurelio."
Mateo immediately moved between us.
"No."
The man smiled.
"You always were sentimental, Mateo."
"Leave."
"You know the truth."
A pause.
"You know what happens if he learns everything."
Mateo's jaw tightened.
I noticed.
There was something he wasn't telling me.
Something even Mateo Vargas was afraid of.
I looked at him.
"What truth?"
No answer.
"Mateo."
Still nothing.
I stepped closer.
"What truth?"
Finally, he spoke.
"Your grandmother wasn't protecting you from criminals."
The mansion became silent.
"She was protecting the world from what you could become."
I stared at him.
I didn't understand.
"What does that mean?"
Mateo looked at the old wooden box.
The same box from my grandmother's room.
"The Mendoza family was not just connected to this city."
He opened the box again.
Inside was another object.
A black ring.
A symbol engraved on it.
The same symbol from the attacker's wrist.
My eyes widened.
"That mark..."
Mateo nodded.
"The Mendoza bloodline created it."
I felt dizzy.
"No."
He looked at me.
"Yes."
The scarred man laughed softly.
"Tell him, Mateo."
Mateo remained silent.
So the man continued.
"Your grandmother was the last leader of a secret organization that controlled Ciudad de Esperanza before Mateo ever became powerful."
My mind struggled to understand.
"My grandmother?"
"Yes."
"The old woman who collected bottles?"
The man smiled.
"That was the disguise."
I remembered every night.
Every time my grandmother disappeared.
Every time she told me not to ask questions.
Every time she looked at the street like she expected someone to come.
She wasn't hiding from the world.
She was hiding me from it.
A sudden explosion shook the mansion.
The floor trembled.
The lights flickered.
The scarred man looked toward the ceiling.
"Time is running out."
Mateo raised his weapon.
"Get out."
The man looked at me one last time.
"Aurelio."
I stared.
"Your grandmother left something for you."
"What?"
A smile appeared.
"The truth."
Then he disappeared into the chaos.
The guards rushed after him.
But Mateo stayed.
He looked at me.
And for the first time...
he looked tired.
Not like a mafia boss.
Like someone carrying a burden for years.
"Your grandmother knew this day would come."
I whispered.
"What day?"
Mateo looked at the ring.
"The day someone came looking for the last Mendoza."
A cold feeling crawled up my spine.
"Why me?"
Mateo walked toward the window.
Outside, flames reflected against the night sky.
Then he said the words that changed my life forever.
"Because Aurelio..."
He turned around.
"You are not the boy who survived."
A pause.
"You are the heir everyone thought was dead."
Before I could speak, every phone in the room rang at the same time.
Every guard looked at their screens.
Their faces changed.
Mateo grabbed one phone.
He read the message.
And his expression became terrifying.
"What is it?" I asked.
He slowly looked at me.
"The entire city knows."
My heart stopped.
"Knows what?"
Mateo lowered the phone.
"That Esperanza Mendoza's grandson is alive."
A second later, another message arrived.
Mateo read it.
This time...
even he looked shocked.
Because the message wasn't a threat.
It was a name.
A name I had never heard before.
May you like
A name that belonged to someone who should have been impossible.
"Bring Aurelio home. His father is waiting."
