Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO DIED TWICELisa returned home at 3:12 in the morning.

The mansion was dark.
Too dark.
She expected to see police.
Evelyn's staff.
Security.
Instead there was nobody.
The house was empty.
Even the cameras had been disconnected.
Lisa walked into her office.
The air smelled faintly of smoke.
Her desk drawer was open.
Her files were gone.
All except one.
A photograph.
She picked it up.
It showed Margaret Vale standing outside the original Northstar office.
The photograph was dated 1989.
Margaret appeared thirty years old.
She looked exactly the same as the woman Lisa had seen in the file photograph.
That shouldn't have been possible.
Lisa placed the photograph on her desk.
Then noticed something written on the back.
SHE DID NOT DIE. SHE WAS REMOVED.
Ryan entered behind her.
"What happened?"
Lisa didn't turn.
"Margaret Vale."
He approached.
"Tell me."
"She founded Northstar."
"And?"
"She developed an early military cybersecurity program."
Ryan's eyes sharpened.
"How early?"
"Before commercial encryption was widely available."
Lisa opened an old corporate archive.
She had never explored it deeply.
Now she searched Margaret's name.
The first result was an obituary.
MARGARET VALE, INDUSTRIALIST, DEAD AT 47.
Cause of death.
Aircraft accident.
No surviving family.
No funeral photos.
No public autopsy.
Lisa scrolled further.
A second file appeared.
Restricted.
She opened it.
A single sentence:
MARGARET VALE WAS TRANSFERRED INTO PROTECTIVE CUSTODY UNDER PROJECT GLASSHOUSE.
Lisa froze.
"Protective custody?"
Ryan read over her shoulder.
"Who put her there?"
Lisa searched.
The authorization carried a military signature.
Evelyn Bennett.
Ryan stepped back.
"My mother?"
Lisa nodded.
"Twenty-seven years ago."
They looked at each other.
Then the lights came on.
Sarah stood in the doorway.
Her face was wet.
Her clothes were stained with mud.
Lisa rushed toward her.
"Where have you been?"
Sarah shook her head.
"You shouldn't have called me."
"Why?"
"Because they're watching."
"Who?"
Sarah looked at Ryan.
Then away.
"Not him."
Ryan frowned.
"Sarah."
"You're not the worst thing in this house."
Lisa's phone buzzed.
A text.
CHECK THE BASEMENT.
The three of them went downstairs.
The Bennett basement was enormous.
Wine storage.
Generator room.
Mechanical systems.
Lisa had never inspected the oldest section.
Sarah led them toward a brick wall.
"There."
"What?"
Sarah pointed to an old panel.
"The original house plans show a room behind this."
Lisa ran her fingers over the bricks.
One section moved.
A hidden door opened.
Inside was a narrow room.
No windows.
A desk.
A chair.
And dozens of files.
Lisa picked up the first folder.
Daniel Bennett.
Her brother.
Photographs.
Military reports.
Medical notes.
One document stopped her cold.
SUBJECT CONSENTING TO DEEP COVER TRANSFER.
Date.
Seven years before Lisa met Ryan.
She opened another file.
LISA BENNETT.
Her own photograph.
Age twenty-one.
A psychological profile.
Her habits.
Her fears.
Her favorite foods.
Her university schedule.
Someone had been studying her before she even knew Ryan existed.
Then another folder.
RYAN BENNETT.
Under "assignment" was a single phrase.
MARRIAGE INTERCEPT.
Lisa felt sick.
She turned to Ryan.
"How long?"
He didn't answer.
"How long did you know about this room?"
"I knew there was an old intelligence room."
"Did you know my file was here?"
"No."
Sarah interrupted.
"You need to see this."
She held a yellowed folder.
Inside was a photograph of Evelyn.
Beside her was Margaret Vale.
Both were standing in front of the same military facility.
The date was 1994.
On the back was a handwritten note:
THEY BUILT THE SYSTEM TOGETHER. THEN MARGARET TRIED TO LEAVE.
Lisa looked at Sarah.
"What system?"
Sarah's hands shook.
"I don't know."
She opened the final page.
There was a list.
Names.
Organizations.
Companies.
Politicians.
Generals.
Banks.
All connected by red lines.
At the center was one phrase.
THE ARCH.
Lisa's phone buzzed again.
A live video began playing.
Daniel appeared on screen.
Bound to a chair.
Bruised.
Alive.
Evelyn stood behind him.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Lisa," she said calmly.
"You've spent your entire life believing your family was the victim."
She smiled.
"You were never the victim."
The video cut.
A countdown appeared.
04:59:58
Then:
WHEN THIS REACHES ZERO, YOUR BROTHER DIES.
Ryan stared at the screen.
Lisa looked at the basement wall.
And noticed a second hidden door opening by itself.
Behind it was a staircase leading underground.
From below came the sound of a woman laughing.
Not Evelyn.
Someone younger.
Someone Lisa had never met.
May you like
Then Sarah whispered:
"Margaret is downstairs."
