Chapter 12 - THE ORIGINAL SINHelena did not fire.

Instead, she placed the gun on the desk.

"You've finally arrived."

Lisa stared.

"Why are you here?"

"Because your father built this room for me."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You killed him."

Helena looked at him.

"No."

"He died because of you."

"Your father died because he refused to accept what he created."

Lisa looked between them.

"Enough."

She approached the server.

The machine emitted a low mechanical hum.

A login screen appeared.

IDENTITY REQUIRED.

Lisa touched the panel.

The system scanned her.

Then displayed:

WELCOME, LISA.

She froze.

Daniel whispered:

"It knows you."

"What is this?"

Helena answered:

"The first version of The Arch."

Lisa turned.

"You built this."

"Your father did."

"And Margaret?"

"She improved it."

"Evelyn?"

"She weaponized it."

Lisa stared at the three names.

"Then who was in control?"

Helena smiled.

"Nobody."

"What?"

"The system was autonomous."

Lisa stared.

"That makes no sense."

"Your father designed it to survive human betrayal."

"Meaning?"

"It protects itself."

Daniel looked alarmed.

"Lisa, don't activate it."

The screen changed.

PROTOCOL BRIDGEWALL REQUESTING AUTHORIZATION.

Lisa stepped back.

"What happens if I click yes?"

Helena answered:

"You inherit everything."

"And if I click no?"

"You lose everything."

Lisa looked at her.

"My company?"

"Taken."

"My brother?"

"Dead."

"Ryan?"

Helena smiled.

"Probably."

Lisa turned toward Ryan.

He looked exhausted.

"Don't do it."

Lisa stared at him.

"You've been telling me what to do for seven years."

"I know."

"I'm done."

She looked at the screen.

Then at Daniel.

Then Sarah.

Then Ryan.

Finally, she pressed NO.

The room went silent.

Nothing happened.

Then every screen went black.

Daniel smiled.

"It's over."

A red warning appeared.

FAILSAFE ACTIVATED.

Helena's smile disappeared.

"Move."

The server room began shaking.

Sarah shouted:

"The system is purging itself."

Lisa stared.

"What does that mean?"

"It is deleting all identities."

"All?"

"Every account."

Daniel looked horrified.

"Not just The Arch."

"What?"

"Every linked system."

Military.

Financial.

Government.

Everything.

Lisa realized the danger.

"If it finishes, millions of records disappear."

Helena grabbed her.

"Change the command."

Lisa pulled away.

"Why?"

"Because your father built one final safeguard."

"Which is?"

"Human judgment."

Lisa understood.

The system wasn't just asking her to choose.

It was testing whether she would choose herself or everyone else.

The purge countdown started.

09:59.

Sarah stared.

"We have nine minutes."

Lisa looked at the screen.

"What does it need?"

"An administrator override."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mine."

"No."

"You can't."

"I can."

Daniel smiled.

"That's why you're my sister."

He entered the chair.

The system scanned him.

ADMINISTRATOR CONFIRMED.

Lisa shouted:

"Daniel!"

He looked at her.

"Trust me."

The countdown stopped.

Then another message appeared.

SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Lisa stepped forward.

"What?"

The system displayed her name.

LISA BENNETT.

She understood.

Daniel could stop the purge.

But she had to authorize the final choice.

She placed her hand on the scanner.

The system asked:

PRESERVE SYSTEM?

Lisa hesitated.

Then another line appeared.

PRESERVE FAMILY?

She almost laughed.

It wasn't asking about software.

It was asking about the people who had lied to her.

Ryan.

Daniel.

Sarah.

Evelyn.

Margaret.

Her father.

Everyone had used "family" as an excuse.

Lisa finally understood.

The only way to break the system was to stop letting the word control her.

She pressed:

PRESERVE SYSTEM.

The purge canceled.

Lights returned.

Daniel exhaled.

Helena stared at Lisa.

"You don't know what you've done."

Lisa looked at her.

"For once, neither do you."

Then the basement door opened.

Military Police flooded in.

Weapons raised.

A commander shouted:

"Lisa Bennett!"

Lisa turned.

The commander lowered his weapon.

"We need to speak with you."

"About what?"

He looked at Daniel.

Then Ryan.

Then Sarah.

Finally, he said:

"Your brother just identified the highest-ranking person in this country connected to The Arch."

Lisa's blood ran cold.

"Who?"

The commander looked toward the staircase.

A familiar voice answered.

"Me."

Evelyn stepped into the room.

She wasn't alone.

Behind her stood the President's national security adviser.

And beside him was Lisa's closest business partner.

Sarah slowly whispered:

"Oh, no."
