Chapter 13 - THE BOARDROOMNorthstar's boardroom filled with armed federal agents before sunrise.

Evelyn sat calmly at the head of the table.
The national security adviser stood beside her.
Lisa's former business partner stood on the other side.
Three people.
One network.
Decades of secrets.
The federal commander placed a folder in front of Lisa.
"Mrs. Bennett, your company has been used as a financial and intelligence intermediary for at least twenty-seven years."
Lisa looked at Evelyn.
"You knew."
Evelyn smiled.
"I built it."
Lisa turned toward the adviser.
"And you?"
The man remained silent.
Ryan stepped forward.
"He helped approve Bridgewall."
The commander nodded.
"He did."
Lisa felt sick.
"How many people?"
The commander looked at her.
"We don't know."
"How much money?"
"We estimate billions."
Lisa stared at the table.
All those years.
All those payments.
All those dead soldiers.
All those families who thought they had been forgotten.
It hadn't been random.
It had been organized.
Evelyn tapped the baton against the table.
"You're making this sentimental."
Lisa looked at her.
"You used dead soldiers."
"I used abandoned identities."
"You stole from their families."
"Governments stole first."
"You murdered people."
Evelyn's eyes darkened.
"War murdered them."
Lisa stood.
"No."
She placed her phone on the table.
"People like you did."
She pressed play.
The audio recording from the night of the baton attack filled the room.
Evelyn's voice.
Ryan's silence.
The strike.
Then Lisa's whisper.
That single recording was enough to change everything.
The commander looked at Evelyn.
"You assaulted your daughter-in-law on record."
Evelyn smiled.
"That won't matter."
The commander placed another file on the table.
"It will when your charity accounts are included."
He opened it.
Transaction after transaction.
Dead soldier identities.
Foreign transfers.
Shell companies.
Evelyn's face finally changed.
"How?"
The commander looked at Lisa.
"She gave us six months of bank statements."
Lisa stared.
She had almost forgotten the simplest thing.
Evidence.
Not theories.
Not rumors.
Not secret systems.
Documents.
The truth survived in numbers.
Evelyn turned toward Ryan.
"You betrayed me."
Ryan shook his head.
"No."
"You were mine."
"I was never yours."
Evelyn smiled.
"Still playing the hero?"
Ryan's expression hardened.
"No."
"I'm finally done being your son."
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
Then she lifted the baton.
A gunshot cracked.
The baton fell.
Evelyn collapsed.
Lisa didn't move.
The commander lowered his weapon.
"She survived."
The room exploded into noise.
Agents rushed forward.
Medical personnel entered.
But Lisa noticed something else.
Sarah was gone.
She looked toward the hallway.
"Where's Sarah?"
Nobody answered.
Lisa ran.
She found the service elevator open.
The floor indicator showed:
B3.
Northstar had no B3.
She pressed the button.
The doors opened.
Inside sat Sarah.
Blood covered her blouse.
Lisa froze.
"Sarah?"
Sarah looked up.
"I tried to stop her."
"Stop who?"
Sarah held out a phone.
"The woman behind your desk."
Lisa stared.
The security camera feed was playing.
A woman was sitting in Lisa's office.
She was opening files.
Lisa recognized the face.
Margaret.
But Margaret was supposed to be under federal protection.
Lisa whispered:
"How is she here?"
Sarah shook her head.
"That's not Margaret."
The woman on the screen looked directly into the camera.
Then smiled.
A message appeared.
YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO YOUR MOTHER WAS.
Lisa's blood ran cold.
Her mother had died when Lisa was six.
At least, that was what she'd been told.
She looked at Sarah.
"Who is she?"
Sarah whispered:
"I don't know."
The elevator doors opened.
A child was standing in the corridor.
Maybe ten years old.
She looked exactly like Lisa had at that age.
Same eyes.
Same hair.
Same small scar beneath the chin.
The girl looked up.
"Are you Lisa?"
Lisa couldn't speak.
The girl smiled.
"My mother said you'd come."
"Who is your mother?"
The girl answered:
May you like
"Helena Ward."
And then every light in the building went out.
