Chapter 3 - THE MARRIAGEAt 11:47 p.m., Lisa sat in the passenger seat of Ryan's SUV.

Neither of them spoke.
Rain struck the windshield in sheets.
The abandoned armory was twenty minutes away, on the edge of the old military district.
Lisa kept the photograph in her pocket.
Daniel.
Her brother.
Alive.
And beside him, a dead man.
The same man who had pinned Ryan's highest service medal to his uniform thirteen years earlier.
Colonel Marcus Hale.
Officially, Hale had died in a helicopter crash.
Lisa remembered watching the military funeral on television.
She remembered Ryan standing beside the coffin.
Now his photograph was standing beside her missing brother.
Lisa turned.
"You knew he was alive."
Ryan's eyes remained on the road.
"I suspected."
"That's not what I asked."
He didn't answer.
Lisa's voice hardened.
"Ryan."
"I found out six months ago."
Her entire body went cold.
"Six months."
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
"I was trying to protect you."
"From my own brother?"
"From the people holding him."
Lisa stared ahead.
"Who are they?"
Ryan tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
"My mother."
Silence.
Lisa's throat tightened.
"Evelyn?"
Ryan nodded.
"She runs the foundation."
"That charity?"
"Not officially."
"Then what is it?"
Ryan hesitated.
"Money."
"That doesn't answer me."
"It's a laundering network."
Lisa looked at him.
"What kind?"
"Military pensions. Settlement funds. insurance claims."
He exhaled.
"Dead soldiers."
The sentence sat between them.
Lisa remembered the bank records.
Repeated payments.
Names she didn't recognize.
Accounts belonging to people she had assumed were donors.
"What did Evelyn do?"
Ryan's voice dropped.
"She moved money through accounts attached to dead service members."
"Why?"
"Because nobody checks them."
Lisa's stomach twisted.
"And Daniel discovered it?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
Ryan's face tightened.
"He confronted her."
"And she kidnapped him?"
"Not exactly."
Lisa turned sharply.
"What does that mean?"
Ryan finally looked at her.
"Daniel joined her network."
Lisa stared.
"No."
"He was working undercover."
"Who for?"
"Federal investigators."
Lisa went silent.
Suddenly every piece of the puzzle shifted.
Her brother hadn't disappeared.
He had vanished because he was investigating the same people who controlled her family.
And Ryan had known.
For six months.
They reached the armory at 11:59.
The front doors were open.
Inside, the building smelled of wet concrete and rust.
Lisa entered first.
The lights flickered on.
Rows of empty lockers stretched into darkness.
Then a voice echoed.
"You're late."
Lisa turned.
A man stepped out from behind a support column.
Gray hair.
Military posture.
Scar on his left cheek.
She recognized him from the photograph.
Colonel Marcus Hale.
Impossible.
Lisa stared.
"You're dead."
Hale smiled.
"That was the idea."
Ryan moved forward.
"Where is Daniel?"
Hale ignored him.
He looked directly at Lisa.
"You finally asked the right question."
"What question?"
"Why you."
Lisa's pulse raced.
Hale placed a folder on an old table.
"Your brother wasn't the only person investigating Evelyn."
Lisa opened it.
Photographs.
Emails.
Marriage documents.
Medical records.
Her wedding certificate.
A military intelligence report.
Then one page with a red stamp.
PROJECT BRIDGEWALL.
"What is this?"
Hale folded his arms.
"Your marriage."
Lisa stared.
"No."
"Your first meeting with Ryan was not accidental."
Lisa shook her head.
"We met at a military fundraiser."
"You were invited by your company."
"Yes."
"Your invitation was arranged."
Lisa looked at Ryan.
He lowered his eyes.
The truth hit harder than the baton.
"You knew."
Ryan nodded once.
"From the beginning."
Lisa's hands trembled.
"Why?"
Hale answered.
"Because your brother asked us to watch you."
Lisa looked at him.
"What?"
"Daniel believed Evelyn would come after you if she realized he had infiltrated her accounts."
"So Ryan was assigned to me?"
"Yes."
Lisa laughed bitterly.
"Assigned."
Ryan stepped closer.
"I fell in love with you."
Lisa looked at him.
"When?"
"Before the wedding."
"But you married me because you were ordered to."
"At first."
Her face hardened.
"At first?"
Ryan reached for her.
She stepped away.
"Don't."
A noise came from the upper level.
Footsteps.
Hale looked up.
His face changed.
"Someone followed you."
The armory doors slammed shut.
Metal bolts locked from the outside.
Then the building filled with the sound of dozens of footsteps.
Hale grabbed Lisa by the arm.
"Down."
Gunfire erupted.
Glass exploded.
Ryan drew his weapon and returned fire.
Lisa dropped behind a concrete barrier.
Hale crouched beside her.
"Those men aren't police."
"Who are they?"
"Private contractors."
"For Evelyn?"
"No."
Hale looked at her.
"For someone even worse."
A flash of red appeared across the opposite wall.
A laser sight.
It moved slowly.
Then stopped directly on Lisa's chest.
Hale pushed her aside.
The shot struck him.
Ryan shouted.
Hale collapsed.
Lisa crawled toward him.
Blood spread across his shirt.
He grabbed her wrist.
"Your brother..."
She leaned closer.
"Where is he?"
Hale's breathing became shallow.
"In your office."
Lisa froze.
"What?"
"He's already there."
"Daniel?"
Hale nodded.
Then whispered:
"He's not alone."
His eyes closed.
Outside, sirens began to approach.
Ryan grabbed Lisa.
"We have to go."
Lisa looked toward the blood on Hale's shirt.
Then at Ryan.
"What does he mean?"
Ryan didn't answer.
Lisa realized something.
The sirens were getting closer.
Too fast.
Almost as if they had been waiting for the shooting to begin.
Then Ryan's phone rang.
He answered.
The color vanished from his face.
"What?"
He listened.
Then he lowered the phone.
"Evelyn is gone."
Lisa stared at him.
"Where?"
May you like
Ryan swallowed.
"She's taken Daniel."
