CHAPTER TWO The Closet That Should Have Been Empty

The closet door swayed once.

Then again.

Just enough for me to notice.

A cold shiver crawled beneath my uniform.

No one else seemed to see it.

Three hundred pairs of eyes were fixed on Vanessa as she climbed the staircase with perfect posture, one hand still resting protectively over the rounded stomach beneath her emerald gown.

She looked composed again.

Too composed.

As though the panic that had flashed across her face downstairs had never existed.

Alessandro walked half a step behind her.

His expression revealed nothing.

That frightened people more than anger ever could.

I tightened my grip around Emma's tiny hand.

"Emma," I whispered, "don't say another word unless Mr. Moretti asks you."

She nodded obediently.

"I know."

Then she leaned closer.

"The man was scary."

My pulse skipped.

"What man?"

"The one with shiny shoes."

I looked ahead.

Every man in the hallway wore polished shoes.

Corporate executives.

Judges.

Politicians.

Security personnel.

No one stood out.

No one except Alessandro.

But Emma shook her head before I could ask.

"Not him."

She pointed farther down the corridor.

"He wore gloves."

Black gloves.

Inside a heated mansion.

In the middle of June.

That made no sense.

Before I could think further, Alessandro stopped in front of the master bedroom.

The enormous double doors opened silently.

The room beyond looked more like a luxury hotel suite than a bedroom.

Soft gold lighting.

Italian furniture.

Fresh white lilies arranged beside floor-to-ceiling windows.

Everything immaculate.

Everything expensive.

Vanessa smiled with practiced grace.

"Please."

She gestured toward the walk-in dressing room.

"I'd hate for such an innocent misunderstanding to ruin tonight."

A few guests chuckled awkwardly.

Someone muttered,

"This poor woman."

Another whispered,

"The maid's child has quite an imagination."

I lowered my eyes.

If nothing was found...

Emma and I would be dismissed before sunrise.

Perhaps worse.

Vanessa stepped into the dressing room first.

The massive white closet stood against the far wall.

Its polished doors reflected the crystal chandelier overhead.

She reached for the handle.

Paused.

Only for the briefest moment.

Then she opened it.

Nothing.

Designer dresses hung in perfect rows.

Shoes lined the shelves.

Luxury handbags filled the upper compartments.

Everything looked exactly as it should.

Several guests sighed with relief.

"I knew it."

"Children make things up."

"What an unfortunate scene."

Vanessa turned toward Alessandro with a wounded smile.

"I hope this settles everything."

He didn't answer.

Instead, he walked forward himself.

Slowly.

Methodically.

His fingertips brushed over the hanging dresses.

He examined the shelves.

The drawers.

The floor.

He wasn't looking for a pillow.

He was looking for signs.

Signs that something had been moved.

The room became silent once more.

Then...

He crouched.

Near the bottom shelf.

His fingers touched something almost invisible.

A single white feather.

He picked it up.

Tiny.

Soft.

Fresh.

His eyes lifted.

"Miss Cole."

Vanessa's smile faltered.

"Yes?"

"You said you've never placed anything else inside this closet tonight."

"Of course."

He held up the feather.

"Then explain this."

She stared at it.

"It's... from a dress."

Alessandro looked toward the wardrobe.

"There isn't a single feathered dress in this room."

Nobody spoke.

A murmur swept through the guests.

Vanessa answered quickly.

"It must have drifted in somehow."

"Drifted."

His voice remained calm.

"Into a closed closet."

No reply.

The silence stretched.

Then an elderly woman stepped forward.

Sophia Moretti.

Alessandro's grandmother.

The true matriarch of the family.

She had watched everything without speaking.

Now her sharp gray eyes rested on the feather.

"I've seen that stitching before."

Every head turned.

Sophia continued quietly.

"Maternity cushions."

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

The room froze again.

Sophia looked toward the feather.

"Luxury custom-made ones are often filled with goose down."

The feather suddenly seemed much heavier.

Vanessa laughed.

"Surely that's just coincidence."

No one laughed with her.

Alessandro handed the feather to the family lawyer.

"Keep it."

The lawyer slipped it into a small evidence envelope.

Evidence.

The word echoed silently through the room.

Vanessa noticed it too.

Her breathing became shallower.

She looked toward the security chief.

Almost instinctively.

Only for a fraction of a second.

But Alessandro caught it.

His eyes shifted toward the security chief.

Marco Bellini.

Former military.

Head of Moretti Security for nearly fifteen years.

Marco stood perfectly still.

Too still.

Almost like a statue.

Alessandro studied him for several seconds.

Then looked away.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Emma tugged gently on my sleeve.

"Mama."

"What is it?"

"The flowers."

"What flowers?"

She pointed toward the top shelf inside the closet.

"The pillow had flowers."

Everyone looked.

Nothing.

Just handbags.

Emma frowned.

"It was there."

She sounded confused now.

Not uncertain.

Confused.

As if reality itself had changed.

Children rarely doubted what they had seen.

Adults made them doubt.

Suddenly...

A voice interrupted.

"Perhaps she's looking too high."

Everyone turned.

The speaker was one of the younger housekeepers.

Lucy.

Only nineteen years old.

She had worked in the mansion for barely six months.

She pointed toward the back panel of the closet.

"I cleaned this room yesterday."

"So?"

Lucy swallowed.

"The back wall wasn't that color."

A ripple moved through the room.

Alessandro stepped closer.

The back panel did look slightly newer than the surrounding wood.

Almost impossible to notice.

Unless someone cleaned it every day.

He knocked once.

Solid.

He knocked again.

Different.

A hollow sound.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Vanessa's face drained of color.

"No..."

She whispered.

"That can't..."

Alessandro looked toward Marco.

"Open it."

Marco hesitated.

Only one heartbeat.

But that heartbeat was enough.

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"I gave you an order."

Marco stepped forward.

His gloved hand reached behind the hanging dresses.

Pressed something hidden.

Click.

A concealed panel slowly slid sideways.

Gasps filled the room.

Behind it...

Was an empty compartment.

Large enough to hide several boxes.

Or...

One maternity cushion.

But it was empty.

Completely empty.

Vanessa released a shaky breath of relief.

"You see?"

She almost laughed.

"There's nothing."

The guests began murmuring again.

Maybe someone had overreacted.

Maybe the little girl had imagined everything.

Then Emma spoke.

Softly.

Almost to herself.

"He took it."

Alessandro looked down.

"Who?"

"The glove man."

"When?"

"Just now."

Every muscle in Marco Bellini's body became rigid.

Emma slowly raised her finger.

Not toward the hidden compartment.

Not toward Vanessa.

She pointed directly...

At Marco's black leather gloves.

The hallway fell into a silence even deeper than before.

And for the first time in fifteen years...

May you like

The head of Moretti Security looked genuinely afraid.
