CHAPTER TEN The Question That Stopped Time

"...Who is Emma's father?"

The words struck me harder than the explosion, the fire, or the fake pregnancy ever had.

For a heartbeat, I couldn't breathe.

Every face in the nursery turned toward me.

Three hundred guests had once celebrated the announcement of an heir.

Now, dozens of the most powerful people in New York stared at a maid as if she had suddenly become the center of a conspiracy decades in the making.

Emma wrapped her arms around my neck.

"Mama..."

Her tiny voice shook.

"Did I do something bad?"

I kissed the top of her head.

"No, sweetheart."

"You didn't do anything wrong."

Not a single thing.

Alessandro's eyes settled on me.

He wasn't suspicious.

He was calculating.

The same way he calculated every business acquisition.

Every negotiation.

Every threat.

"When?"

he asked quietly.

I blinked.

"What?"

"When did Emma's father leave?"

There was no accusation in his voice.

Only the need for facts.

I swallowed.

"Three years ago."

"His name?"

I hesitated.

Because I realized...

I had almost never spoken it aloud.

"Adrian."

"Adrian what?"

"I don't know."

A murmur spread through the room.

The family lawyer frowned.

"You had a child with a man whose surname you never knew?"

Heat rushed to my face.

"It wasn't like that."

Sophia watched me carefully.

"Then tell us."

I looked down at Emma before answering.

"I met him while working at a private recovery center outside Boston."

"I was a nursing assistant."

"He was admitted under a false identity after a serious car accident."

"He couldn't remember anything."

The room grew quiet again.

"He had no wallet."

"No phone."

"No identification."

"The doctors called him 'John Doe.'"

"He chose the name Adrian because he didn't want to be called that forever."

Alessandro didn't interrupt.

I continued.

"We spent six months together."

"When he recovered enough to travel..."

"He disappeared."

"You never saw him again?"

I slowly shook my head.

"He left one note."

"What did it say?"

I closed my eyes.

Even after four years...

I remembered every word.

If I ever remember who I really am... I'll come back for both of you.

Silence.

"He never came back."

Daniel Ross stared at me with growing disbelief.

"What did he look like?"

I frowned.

"Why?"

"What did he look like?"

"Tall."

"Dark hair."

"Gray eyes."

A strange expression crossed Daniel's face.

"Did he have..."

He hesitated.

"...a scar?"

I froze.

A scar.

Just beneath Adrian's left collarbone.

A long white line.

He had told me he didn't know where it came from.

"Yes."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Oh, God..."

Alessandro took one step closer.

"You know him."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I've never met him."

"Then how?"

"I've seen his photograph."

My pulse thundered.

"Where?"

Daniel looked toward the burned archive box.

"In another file."

"The file wasn't labeled with a name."

"It was labeled..."

He swallowed.

"...Project Heir."

The room became silent once again.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It sounded almost desperate.

"This is ridiculous."

She pointed toward me.

"So now we're supposed to believe the maid secretly gave birth to some mysterious heir?"

No one answered.

Not because they believed it.

Because no one knew what to believe anymore.

Sophia picked up the burned photograph again.

She looked at the younger woman standing beside her.

"Elena..."

Her voice barely carried.

"I should have listened."

Alessandro turned.

"Grandmother."

She looked at him.

"You know her."

Sophia nodded.

"I loved her."

The room stiffened.

"She was my sister."

A collective gasp echoed through the nursery.

No one had ever heard that name connected to the Moretti family.

"You never told anyone."

Sophia gave a sad smile.

"Because everyone believed she died."

Daniel whispered,

"She didn't."

Sophia slowly lifted her eyes.

"You know that?"

Daniel nodded.

"She escaped."

The room seemed to tilt.

"Escaped from what?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"The Committee."

Before anyone could ask another question...

One of the firefighters walked back into the nursery.

"Mr. Moretti."

"What is it?"

"We found something under the floor."

The nursery fell silent.

"Show me."

The burned crib had been moved aside.

A section of hardwood flooring had collapsed during the fire.

Beneath it...

A narrow steel hatch.

No one spoke.

The hatch was old.

Far older than the nursery itself.

"This wasn't built recently."

One of the estate engineers examined it.

"The tunnel predates the current mansion renovation."

Sophia looked stunned.

"I never knew this existed."

Alessandro looked at her.

"I believe you."

She nodded.

"Because if I had..."

She didn't finish.

The steel hatch required a key.

Not a normal key.

A small one.

Alessandro reached into his pocket.

The silver key.

C-17.

He held it beside the lock.

It fit perfectly.

No one breathed.

He turned it once.

Click.

The hatch unlocked.

A wave of cold air rose from below.

It smelled...

Old.

Dust.

Stone.

And something else.

Paper.

Thousands of pages of aging paper.

Alessandro lifted the hatch.

A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness beneath the mansion.

The walls below were lined with shelves.

Shelves...

Filled with boxes.

Hundreds of them.

The family lawyer whispered,

"My God..."

Each box carried a handwritten label.

A date.

A woman's name.

And one chilling word.

HEIR.

Some boxes were marked:

1988

1994

2003

2011

Dozens.

Maybe hundreds.

As the flashlight beam swept deeper into the underground archive...

It stopped on the oldest shelf.

One box stood alone.

Covered in dust.

Unlike the others, its label contained no date.

Only a single handwritten name.

ELENA MORETTI.

Sophia staggered backward.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I buried an empty coffin..."

She whispered.

Before anyone could descend the stairs...

A slow clap echoed from somewhere below.

One.

Two.

Three.

The sound rolled up through the darkness.

Then an elderly man's calm voice floated upward.

"I was beginning to wonder..."

A pause.

"...how long it would take you to find me."

Emma clutched my arm so tightly it hurt.

She didn't need to say his name.

I already knew.

The Piano Man.
