CHAPTER ELEVEN The Man Beneath the Mansion

The applause echoed through the underground chamber.
Slow.
Measured.
Almost polite.
One clap.
Then another.
As though the man below had been expecting guests.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
The only sound was the rain tapping faintly against the mansion far above us.
Alessandro switched on a more powerful flashlight and aimed it down the stone staircase.
The beam cut through the darkness.
Empty steps.
Old brick walls.
Dust drifting lazily through the air.
But no man.
The voice came again.
"Careful."
It was calm.
Educated.
The kind of voice that had once commanded boardrooms instead of battlefields.
"Those stairs are older than everyone standing in this room."
Emma tightened her grip on my hand.
"Mama..."
"I know."
"No."
She shook her head.
"He's smiling."
Alessandro stepped onto the first stair.
The family lawyer immediately reached for his arm.
"Mr. Moretti..."
"It could be a trap."
Alessandro didn't stop.
"It already is."
He continued downward.
Two security officers followed.
Then Sophia.
Against every instinct telling me to stay behind...
I carried Emma and descended as well.
Vanessa hesitated at the entrance.
For the first time that night...
She looked less like a manipulative fiancée...
And more like someone who had wandered into a nightmare she no longer understood.
She eventually followed.
Because there was nowhere else to go.
The underground passage stretched farther than anyone expected.
The walls were reinforced with thick stone blocks blackened by age.
Old gas lamps, long disconnected, lined the corridor every twenty feet.
Someone had built this place decades earlier.
Not as a hiding place.
As an archive.
Shelves filled both sides of the tunnel.
Thousands of files.
Thousands of boxes.
Each carefully labeled.
Each bearing a woman's name.
Each carrying the same single word.
HEIR.
I felt sick.
How many lives had been catalogued beneath this mansion?
Daniel suddenly stopped walking.
His breathing quickened.
"I've been here."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
"I've never realized it."
He stared around the chamber.
"But..."
"I remember the smell."
The smell of old paper.
Leather.
Mold.
Fear.
At the end of the corridor stood an enormous oak door.
It wasn't locked.
It stood slightly open.
Warm light spilled through the gap.
Electric light.
Someone was living down here.
Alessandro pushed the door open.
The room beyond looked nothing like the dusty archive outside.
It resembled a private study.
Bookshelves.
A fireplace.
Fresh coffee.
A polished grand piano.
Someone had been here only moments ago.
Steam still rose from a porcelain teacup.
But the chair beside it...
Was empty.
Then we noticed the chessboard.
Halfway through a game.
Black pieces.
White pieces.
Perfectly arranged.
One move away from checkmate.
A handwritten note rested beside it.
Alessandro picked it up.
It read:
You always rush the ending.
Nothing more.
No signature.
Emma slipped from my arms before I could stop her.
She walked directly toward the piano.
"Emma!"
I rushed after her.
She ignored me.
She reached the piano bench...
And picked up a small wooden horse.
A toy.
Old.
Its paint chipped with age.
She smiled.
"My horse."
I frowned.
"What?"
"The piano man promised he'd fix it."
My blood froze.
The wooden horse.
Emma had cried over losing that toy...
Two years ago.
We had searched our apartment for days.
How...
How could it possibly be here?
Alessandro noticed my expression.
"That belongs to her?"
I nodded slowly.
"She lost it."
"When?"
"Two years ago."
Silence settled over the room.
The implications were impossible.
Someone had entered our apartment.
Taken Emma's favorite toy.
And placed it beneath the Moretti estate.
Long before tonight.
Sophia wandered toward one of the bookshelves.
Her fingers brushed across the spines.
Medical journals.
Genealogy records.
Court transcripts.
Birth certificates.
Then...
A framed photograph.
She picked it up.
A much younger version of herself smiled beside Elena.
Between them stood a little boy.
Approximately six years old.
Sophia whispered,
"Luca..."
Alessandro looked at the picture.
"Who is Luca?"
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
"My son."
The room fell silent.
"You told everyone he died."
"I believed he had."
Daniel stepped closer.
Then slowly shook his head.
"No."
He pointed toward the little boy in the photograph.
"He grew up."
Sophia looked at him.
"How do you know?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Because..."
"I transported files."
"I saw his adult photograph."
The room became perfectly still.
"He didn't die."
"He became..."
Daniel struggled to finish.
"...C-17."
No one breathed.
The Piano Man.
The mysterious old man.
The architect behind tonight's impossible trail.
Sophia's supposedly dead son.
A faint chuckle echoed through the study.
Not from the hallway.
Not from behind us.
From an old speaker mounted high in the corner of the room.
The lights flickered.
Then the speaker crackled to life.
"Very good."
The same calm voice.
"I see Daniel finally remembered."
Sophia's knees nearly gave out.
"Luca..."
The voice laughed softly.
"I haven't been Luca for a very long time."
Alessandro stepped toward the speaker.
"Show yourself."
"No."
"You've earned answers."
"But not all of them."
A pause.
Then:
"Vanessa."
Every head turned.
She looked terrified.
"Y... yes?"
"You've served your purpose."
Her face turned white.
"What?"
"I told you to delay him."
"I never told you..."
"...that you would become the heir."
Vanessa staggered backward.
"You lied to me."
The voice answered almost kindly.
"I lie to everyone."
The room chilled.
Vanessa wasn't the mastermind.
She had been another pawn.
Just like Marco.
Just like Michael.
Perhaps just like Daniel.
The speaker crackled again.
"Alessandro."
He remained silent.
"You're asking the wrong question."
"What should I be asking?"
The answer came immediately.
"You keep asking..."
'Who wants your empire?'
A pause.
"You should ask..."
'Who owns it already?'"
The line went dead.
The room fell silent once more.
Then...
One of the security officers shouted from the archive hallway.
"Mr. Moretti!"
Everyone rushed out.
The officer stood frozen before one of the oldest shelves.
He pointed silently.
Every single box...
Had disappeared.
Hundreds of archive files.
Gone.
The shelves were empty.
Except for one box left alone in the center.
Its label hadn't been there minutes earlier.
Fresh black ink.
Only three words.
ISABELLA.
My name.
And beneath it...
A second line.
Written in the same handwriting.
May you like
