CHAPTER TWELVE The Box With My Name

No one reached for the box.

Not even me.

It sat alone on the empty shelf like it had always belonged there.

The archive around it had become a graveyard of dust.

Hundreds of files had vanished in the few minutes we had spent inside the hidden study.

No footsteps.

No trucks.

No alarms.

Just...

Gone.

My name, written in fresh black ink, seemed to pulse beneath the flashlight beams.

ISABELLA.

Below it:

Open me alone.

A trick.

It had to be.

Alessandro stepped in front of me.

"Don't touch it."

I hadn't realized I was moving until he said the words.

My feet stopped.

My hands were shaking.

Emma looked from the box to me.

"Mama..."

"Yes?"

"He wants you to remember."

A chill crept down my spine.

"What do you mean?"

She frowned.

"He said you forgot."

Every face turned toward Emma.

I knelt in front of her.

"Sweetheart... when did he say that?"

She answered as naturally as if she were talking about the weather.

"When he tucked me into bed."

The world seemed to stop.

I stared at her.

"...What?"

"The piano man."

My voice barely worked.

"When did he tuck you into bed?"

"The night you cried."

I couldn't breathe.

There had only been one night like that.

Two years ago.

The anniversary of Adrian's disappearance.

Emma had fallen asleep on the sofa while I cried in the kitchen, believing she couldn't hear me.

I had carried her to bed myself.

Hadn't I?

Had I?

Fragments of memory drifted through my mind.

The apartment door.

Unlocked.

A piano melody from somewhere outside.

Then...

Nothing.

Just emptiness.

It felt like trying to remember a dream after waking.

Daniel looked horrified.

"They're drugging people."

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

He swallowed.

"They've done it before."

"Certain sedatives don't erase memories."

"They... blur them."

"You remember pieces."

"Never the whole night."

I felt my knees weaken.

"No..."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"That's how they move people."

"That's how they make witnesses unreliable."

Alessandro's face darkened.

"You think Isabella was drugged?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"I think someone entered her apartment."

"More than once."

The room fell silent.

I hugged Emma instinctively.

A sickness settled in my stomach.

Had someone watched us?

For years?

Sophia stepped toward the shelf.

She didn't touch the box.

Instead, she examined the wood around it.

"Look."

She pointed to a thin layer of dust covering the shelf.

Except beneath the box.

The wood there was perfectly clean.

"It wasn't placed here just now."

She looked at Alessandro.

"It replaced another box."

He nodded.

"Meaning someone knew we'd come."

"Long before tonight."

The family lawyer adjusted his glasses.

"Mr. Moretti..."

"If this was prepared in advance..."

"Then the fire..."

"The fake pregnancy..."

"The murdered courier..."

He couldn't finish the sentence.

Because the answer was becoming obvious.

Tonight wasn't spiraling out of control.

It had been designed.

Every event.

Every revelation.

Every step.

Someone had been leading them through the mansion like pieces across a chessboard.

Alessandro finally looked at me.

"Do you trust me?"

The question surprised me.

I answered honestly.

"I don't know."

He nodded.

"Fair."

Then he picked up the box.

Nothing happened.

No hidden needle.

No explosion.

He examined every side.

Solid oak.

Old hinges.

No visible lock.

Only a wax seal impressed with an unfamiliar crest.

A crown...

Above a single piano key.

He held it toward Daniel.

"Have you seen this before?"

Daniel's face turned white.

He whispered,

"The Conservatory."

"What conservatory?"

"I don't know its real name."

"That's what couriers called it."

"The place where records were kept."

Sophia frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

Daniel looked at her.

"Most people haven't."

"Because nobody who entered..."

"...ever spoke about it again."

Alessandro broke the wax seal.

The lid opened with a soft creak.

Inside...

There were no documents.

No photographs.

Only three objects.

A silver pocket watch.

A folded letter.

And an old hospital bracelet.

I stared at the bracelet.

My vision blurred.

No.

No...

It couldn't be.

I reached into the box with trembling fingers.

The plastic had yellowed with age.

But the writing was still clear.

MOTHER: ISABELLA CARTER

Beneath it...

A date.

Twenty-six years ago.

The room disappeared around me.

I whispered,

"...That's impossible."

Sophia looked at the bracelet.

"Isabella..."

"My mother died when I was six."

I could barely hear my own voice.

"I've never been pregnant except with Emma."

The bracelet slipped from my fingers.

It landed softly on the wooden floor.

Alessandro picked it up.

His eyes narrowed.

"This isn't yours."

"What?"

He turned the bracelet over.

"There are two dates."

On the reverse side...

Barely visible beneath years of wear...

Another engraving.

INFANT: BABY GIRL A

The room fell silent.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Oh, God..."

The family lawyer frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel answered in a whisper.

"It means..."

"There wasn't one baby."

"There were two."

Twins.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"No..."

I whispered.

"My mother never had twins."

Daniel looked at me with genuine pity.

"Maybe..."

"You were never told."

Alessandro unfolded the letter.

The paper crackled with age.

It contained only four handwritten lines.

If you're reading this, Isabella...

You were never the child they wanted.

You were the child they failed to find.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just those words.

Emma gently tugged my sleeve.

"Mama."

I looked down at her.

She pointed toward the pocket watch.

"It opens."

Alessandro pressed the release button.

The watch clicked open.

Inside, instead of gears...

Someone had hidden a tiny photograph.

Two newborn babies.

Wrapped in identical blankets embroidered with the same floral pattern Emma had recognized on Vanessa's fake pregnancy cushion.

On the back of the photograph were two names.

Isabella

...

and

Elena.

Sophia gasped.

The photograph slipped from Alessandro's hand.

She stared at it as tears rolled silently down her face.

"Elena wasn't my sister..."

She whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

Sophia slowly shook her head.

"I lied."

A long, broken breath escaped her.

"Elena..."

"...was my daughter."

Before anyone could absorb the confession...

A gunshot echoed from somewhere deep inside the underground tunnels.

Then another.

Then a scream.

One of the security guards shouted into his radio:

"Shots fired!"

"They've found Marco Bellini!"

A pause.

Then the final words that froze everyone in place:

May you like

"...He's still alive."
