CHAPTER 9: THE BLOODSTAINED LEDGER

The message stayed on Daniel's screen.

You're carrying exactly what we wanted you to carry.

For one terrifying second, he wondered if the ledger itself was a trap.

Police sirens grew louder.

People were screaming.

Paramedics rushed toward Samuel Whitaker's body.

Daniel forced himself to think.

Panic could wait.

Survival couldn't.

He wrapped the ledger inside his jacket before anyone else could see it.

Not to hide evidence.

To keep strangers from recognizing it.

If someone had just murdered Samuel in broad daylight...

They weren't after a wallet.

They were after this book.

Detective Morris Arrives

Within minutes, Detective Angela Morris stepped beneath the yellow crime-scene tape.

She spotted Daniel immediately.

"Are you hurt?"

He shook his head.

"Samuel's been shot."

Morris looked toward the paramedics.

One medic slowly removed his gloves.

Another gently pulled a white sheet over Samuel's body.

The detective understood without anyone speaking.

She turned back to Daniel.

"What happened?"

Daniel told her everything.

The meeting.

Samuel's confession.

The ledger.

The sniper.

He stopped before mentioning one detail.

The text message.

Or the ledger hidden beneath his jacket.

Not because he distrusted Morris.

Because Samuel's last words echoed louder than the gunshots.

Don't trust...

He didn't know how the sentence ended.

Until he did...

He couldn't risk anyone else knowing.

An Unexpected Discovery

Crime Scene Investigator Lisa Grant approached with an evidence bag.

"We found this in Mr. Whitaker's pocket."

Inside lay a small brass key.

The number 214 was stamped into it.

No address.

No label.

Just the number.

Detective Morris frowned.

"Safe-deposit box?"

"Storage unit?"

Daniel remained silent.

Whatever it opened...

Samuel had considered it important enough to carry until his death.

Natalie Waits

Back at the house, Natalie paced the living room.

Every passing minute tightened the knot in her stomach.

She called Daniel.

No answer.

Again.

Voicemail.

She tried Detective Morris.

Nothing.

Then the doorbell rang.

Natalie froze.

She wasn't expecting anyone.

She looked through the peephole.

A delivery driver.

Holding a bouquet of white lilies.

She opened the door cautiously.

"Mrs. Carter?"

"Yes?"

"Delivery for you."

"No signature required."

The driver handed her the flowers and walked away.

Natalie carried them inside.

There was no card attached.

Only a small envelope tucked beneath the ribbon.

She opened it.

Inside...

A single photograph.

Taken through the hospital window during her chemotherapy consultation the previous week.

Someone had been watching her.

On the back, three handwritten words:

You're next, too.

The bouquet slipped from her hands.

White lilies scattered across the floor.

The Ledger Opens

That evening, Daniel locked himself inside the old workshop.

He placed the ledger on his father's workbench.

His hands hesitated over the cover.

Then he opened it.

The first page wasn't financial records.

It was a list.

Twenty-seven names.

Each followed by one word.

Active.

Retired.

Dead.

Victor Hale...

Active.

Richard Holloway...

Active.

Samuel Whitaker...

Dead.

Jonathan Carter...

Dead.

Thomas Carter...

Dead.

Daniel Carter...

Daniel stopped.

Beside his own name, someone had recently written in blue ink:

Monitoring.

Not Target.

Not Victim.

Monitoring.

Someone had updated this ledger recently.

Very recently.

The Code

Several pages deeper, Daniel noticed something strange.

Every tenth transaction contained a tiny red dot beside the amount.

No explanation.

No legend.

Just a dot.

He copied several account numbers into a notebook.

Then compared them.

One pattern emerged.

Every marked transaction eventually led to the same destination.

Not Victor.

Not Lorraine.

Not Juniper Holdings.

One final account.

Listed only as:

GH-01

Daniel frowned.

GH.

Grace Holloway?

Impossible.

The elderly accountant who had helped them?

No...

It couldn't be.

Could it?

Victor's Emergency Meeting

That same night, Victor Hale gathered five people around a conference table.

Lorraine.

Richard Holloway.

A real estate developer.

A retired banker.

A state senator.

No names were spoken.

Phones remained outside the room.

Victor addressed them calmly.

"Samuel is dead."

Nobody reacted.

"He gave Daniel something."

The senator finally spoke.

"The ledger?"

Victor nodded.

Silence.

The banker whispered,

"Then we're exposed."

Victor smiled.

"No."

"We're inconvenienced."

Lorraine stared at him.

"Inconvenienced?"

Victor leaned forward.

"Because Daniel still believes the ledger tells the whole story."

"It doesn't."

He reached into his briefcase.

Removed an identical black leather book.

Placed it on the table.

Everyone stared.

"A second ledger?"

Victor nodded.

"The real one."

Lorraine felt her blood run cold.

"The one Samuel stole..."

Victor smiled faintly.

"...was only half the puzzle."

A Hidden Pocket

Back in the workshop, Daniel closed the ledger.

Something felt... wrong.

The back cover seemed thicker than the front.

He pressed gently.

Nothing.

He ran his fingertips along the inside leather.

A tiny ridge.

Almost invisible.

Using a thin screwdriver, he carefully lifted the lining.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside rested a folded piece of onion-skin paper.

One sentence.

Written in Samuel Whitaker's handwriting.

If you're reading this, Victor still believes he controls the game.

Below it...

An address.

And one instruction.

Locker 214. Union Station. Phoenix.

Daniel stared at the brass key sitting beside him on the workbench.

Samuel hadn't carried the key by accident.

He had left Daniel the next move.

The Final Call

Daniel picked up his phone to tell Natalie he was coming home.

Before he could dial...

The phone rang first.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Then...

A little girl's voice whispered,

"Please help my mommy."

Daniel's heart stopped.

"Who is this?"

The child began crying.

"My mommy says we have to hide."

A woman's muffled scream echoed somewhere in the background.

Then the line cut off.

One second later...

A text message arrived.

It contained only GPS coordinates.

And beneath them...

A chilling sentence.

You're not the only family Victor Hale destroyed.
