CHAPTER 12: THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS

Lorraine Carter didn't scream.

Years of living beside lies had taught her one thing:

Fear made people careless.

She slowly set the old family photograph down on the coffee table.

The voice had come from the darkness near the fireplace.

Calm.

Measured.

Familiar.

A man stepped forward.

His tailored charcoal suit looked immaculate despite the late hour.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

Victor Hale.

Lorraine exhaled.

"You scared me."

Victor's expression never changed.

"Good."

"You should be scared."

He walked past her without asking permission and poured himself a glass of water.

"The police dug up Jonathan's medication."

Lorraine swallowed.

"I know."

"They'll test everything."

"I know."

"They'll reopen the death investigation."

"I know."

Victor finally looked at her.

"And they'll eventually discover that someone picked up the prescription two days before Jonathan died."

Silence.

Lorraine's hands began to shake.

Twenty-Two Years Earlier

The memory returned whether she wanted it or not.

Jonathan had been working late.

Daniel was away at college orientation.

The pharmacy called.

Jonathan's prescription was ready.

Lorraine offered to pick it up.

She had every intention of doing exactly that.

Nothing more.

When she arrived...

Victor was already waiting outside.

He smiled.

"You saved me a trip."

Lorraine frowned.

"What are you doing here?"

"I have a favor."

"I don't owe you anything."

Victor held up an envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Not of money.

Not of bank accounts.

Photographs of Brooke.

Sixteen years old.

Leaving a party with older boys.

Another of Daniel fighting outside a bar.

Another of Jonathan meeting privately with Harold Lawson.

Victor spoke quietly.

"I can destroy your family."

"Or..."

He produced a small amber bottle.

"...you can help me protect all of us."

Lorraine stepped backward.

"What is that?"

"A medication."

"For Jonathan."

She stared.

"I won't poison my husband."

Victor's smile disappeared.

"You won't."

"You'll simply replace one bottle with another."

"The dosage will do the rest."

Tears filled Lorraine's eyes.

"No."

Victor leaned closer.

"If Jonathan finishes his audit..."

"Your children lose everything."

Lorraine remembered trembling so violently she almost dropped the prescription bag.

She should have walked away.

She should have called the police.

Instead...

She accepted the bottle.

Present Day

"I didn't know."

Lorraine whispered.

"I thought..."

Victor interrupted.

"You thought the dosage would make him sick."

"I never believed..."

She couldn't finish.

Victor didn't comfort her.

He never had.

"Regret is expensive."

"We don't have time for it."

Detective Morris Connects the Dots

By noon, the pharmacy records had arrived.

Detective Morris spread them across the conference table.

Every prescription required two signatures.

One from the pharmacist.

One from the person collecting the medication.

The pickup signature belonged to...

Lorraine Carter.

Morris frowned.

"That's not enough."

Officer Ramirez looked confused.

"Why not?"

"Because collecting medication isn't murder."

She tapped the toxicology report.

"We still need to prove the pills were switched."

Daniel Visits Grace

Daniel drove straight to Grace Holloway.

She opened the door before he knocked.

"I saw the news."

He nodded.

"My father's case is now officially a homicide."

Grace closed her eyes.

"I prayed I'd never hear those words."

Daniel placed the pharmacy records on the table.

"I need to know something."

She adjusted her glasses.

"What?"

"Who had access to pharmaceuticals?"

Grace didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she walked to an old filing cabinet.

Removed a faded employee directory.

She turned to one page.

Victor Hale Financial Group.

Among the listed consultants...

One name stood out.

Dr. Michael Avery
Licensed Pharmacologist.

Daniel frowned.

"A pharmacist?"

Grace nodded.

"He specialized in pharmaceutical consulting before joining Victor."

"Where is he now?"

Grace looked away.

"Dead."

Not Dead

Detective Morris called before Daniel reached his truck.

"We found Dr. Avery."

Daniel stopped walking.

"Alive?"

"Very."

"He changed his name twelve years ago."

"He now lives in New Mexico."

Daniel's pulse quickened.

"If he switched those pills..."

"He may be the only living witness."

Across the State Line

Dr. Michael Avery sat on the porch of a remote ranch house.

He hadn't practiced medicine in over a decade.

He had changed his name.

Changed his appearance.

Changed everything.

But every night...

He still dreamed about Jonathan Carter.

A black SUV rolled slowly up the gravel driveway.

A man stepped out.

Victor Hale.

Michael's face lost all color.

"You found me."

Victor smiled.

"I never lost you."

An Offer

Victor placed a leather briefcase on the porch.

Inside...

Two million dollars in cash.

Michael stared.

"I don't want it."

Victor nodded.

"I know."

"You want peace."

Michael whispered,

"I've lived with this for twenty-two years."

"I switched those pills."

"I've already paid."

Victor leaned closer.

"No."

"You've survived."

"There's a difference."

Michael looked at the money.

Then at Victor.

"What do you want?"

Victor answered with brutal simplicity.

"Disappear again."

"Forever."

The Second Visitor

Victor had barely driven away when another truck appeared at the ranch.

Daniel stepped out.

Michael's eyes widened.

"You..."

Daniel nodded.

"I'm Jonathan Carter's son."

The old pharmacist closed his eyes.

"I knew this day would come."

Daniel sat beside him on the porch.

For nearly a minute...

Neither man spoke.

Finally, Michael whispered,

"I've rehearsed this conversation for twenty-two years."

Daniel's voice was calm.

"Then don't waste another second."

Michael nodded slowly.

"I switched the medication."

Daniel looked away.

"But I didn't know Victor had increased the dosage."

"I thought..."

His voice broke.

"...I thought Jonathan would end up in the hospital."

"I never intended..."

Daniel interrupted quietly.

"My father still died."

Michael nodded, tears streaming down his face.

"Yes."

"He died because I was too weak to say no."

The Recording

Michael stood and walked into the house.

When he returned...

He carried a small digital recorder.

"I made this fifteen years ago."

"In case I finally found the courage."

Daniel pressed Play.

Michael's younger voice filled the speaker.

"My name is Dr. Michael Avery."

"I altered Jonathan Carter's medication under pressure from Victor Hale."

"Lorraine Carter delivered the prescription."

"She appeared terrified."

"Victor threatened her family."

The recording continued for another twelve minutes.

Every detail.

Every date.

Every name.

When it ended...

Daniel realized they finally had something they had never possessed before.

A direct confession.

The Cliffhanger

As Daniel stood to leave, Michael grabbed his arm.

"There's one thing I never told anyone."

Daniel turned.

"What?"

Michael looked toward the mountains.

Then said quietly,

"Victor Hale doesn't work for himself."

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Michael's face turned pale.

"I only met the real boss once."

"He wasn't interested in money."

"He was interested in control."

Daniel's heartbeat quickened.

"Who is he?"

Michael whispered a single name.

Daniel's eyes widened in disbelief.

Before he could respond...

A bullet tore through the porch window.

The recorder exploded into pieces.

A second shot struck the wall inches from Daniel's head.

Someone had followed him.

And this time...

The assassin wasn't aiming to silence the witness.

May you like

He was aiming to silence Daniel.
