CHAPTER 5: THE PLANTED EVIDENCE

The garage was silent.
Daniel stood six feet away from his truck, his phone still in his hand.
He didn't touch the door.
He didn't look inside.
He simply waited.
Twenty-three minutes later, two unmarked police vehicles rolled quietly into the driveway.
Detective Angela Morris stepped out with Officer Ramirez and a crime scene technician carrying a black equipment case.
"Good," Morris said as she approached. "You didn't touch anything."
Daniel shook his head.
"I wasn't about to make that mistake."
The technician slipped on latex gloves.
A small camera clicked as he photographed every angle of the truck.
The door handle.
The tires.
The windows.
The gap where the passenger door hadn't latched completely.
Only then did he slowly pull it open.
Inside, everything appeared normal.
A hard hat.
A toolbox.
A stack of construction manuals.
The technician leaned farther in.
Then stopped.
"Found something."
He reached beneath the passenger seat and carefully pulled out a small velvet jewelry box.
Daniel recognized it instantly.
His heart sank.
"Our anniversary gift..."
Detective Morris opened the box.
A diamond necklace sparkled under the garage lights.
She looked at Daniel.
"You've seen this before?"
"I bought it for my wife on our first anniversary."
Natalie, standing beside him, whispered, "Your mother took it months ago."
The detective nodded slowly.
"So if someone reports this stolen..."
"They'll say I hid it," Daniel finished.
Morris closed the box without touching the necklace itself.
"They're trying to manufacture probable cause."
Three Hours Earlier...
Brooke Carter couldn't stop shaking.
She had slipped into Daniel's truck while he and Natalie were inside reviewing medical paperwork.
It had taken less than thirty seconds.
Drop the jewelry box.
Close the door.
Walk away.
She told herself it was necessary.
Their lawyer had promised everything would be fine.
But as she drove away...
She hadn't noticed the small security camera mounted beneath Daniel's garage roof.
A camera Daniel himself had installed five years earlier.
One his mother had completely forgotten existed.
The Next Morning
Detective Morris returned carrying a laptop.
"I think you should watch this."
She connected it to the television in Daniel's living room.
The footage was crystal clear.
A timestamp glowed in the corner.
11:18 PM
The garage door was partially open.
Brooke quietly entered.
She looked over her shoulder twice.
Walked directly to Daniel's truck.
Opened the passenger door.
Bent down.
Placed something underneath the seat.
Closed the door.
Left.
The entire operation lasted twenty-eight seconds.
Natalie covered her mouth.
Daniel didn't say a word.
Detective Morris paused the video.
"There isn't much room for interpretation."
Across Town
Lorraine smiled as she walked into the Scottsdale Police Department.
"I'd like to report a theft."
Officer Jenkins looked up.
"What was stolen?"
"A diamond necklace."
"When did you last see it?"
"Yesterday morning."
"Who do you suspect?"
Lorraine sighed dramatically.
"My son."
The officer began typing.
"Why do you believe that?"
"He became obsessed with our finances."
"He threatened me."
"And after he left..."
"The necklace disappeared."
Officer Jenkins nodded.
"Do you have proof of ownership?"
Lorraine confidently handed over an insurance appraisal.
The officer reviewed it.
Then frowned.
"This appraisal says the necklace was purchased by..."
He looked again.
"...Daniel Carter."
Lorraine froze.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
The officer noticed.
Meanwhile...
Detective Morris's phone buzzed.
She read the incoming message.
Then smiled.
"Perfect timing."
Daniel looked up.
"What happened?"
"Your mother just reported the necklace stolen."
"And?"
"The responding officer called me."
"Why?"
"Because the item she claims was stolen..."
She held up the evidence bag containing the necklace.
"...is already in police custody."
Daniel almost laughed.
"So she walked into a police station and unknowingly reported evidence against herself."
Morris nodded.
"People who tell too many lies eventually forget which version they're living."
That Afternoon
Daniel visited the bank again.
This time, the fraud investigator greeted him personally.
"We've completed the preliminary audit."
Daniel sat down.
"What did you find?"
The investigator slid a thick report across the desk.
"We've confirmed thirty-two forged signatures."
Daniel stared.
"Thirty-two?"
"We're still counting."
The investigator turned another page.
"There are also six unauthorized loans."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Loans?"
"Taken out in your name."
"Totaling..."
He checked the report.
"...$487,000."
Daniel felt the room spin.
"I never received that money."
"We know."
"Where did it go?"
The investigator hesitated.
"Most of it was transferred into shell companies."
"Owned by whom?"
"We're still tracing that."
Then he looked directly at Daniel.
"But one name keeps appearing."
Daniel already knew the answer before he heard it.
"Victor Hale."
That Evening
Natalie finally agreed to let Daniel shave what remained of her uneven hair.
She sat quietly on the back patio.
The Arizona sunset painted the sky in orange and crimson.
Daniel carefully ran the clippers over her scalp.
When he finished...
She touched her head and smiled sadly.
"I was embarrassed."
"You never have to be."
"I thought you'd see me differently."
Daniel knelt in front of her.
"I see the woman who sold her hair to stay alive."
"I see someone who kept fighting when everyone else wanted her to disappear."
"You have nothing to be ashamed of."
Natalie's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know how you still love me."
Daniel gently rested his forehead against hers.
"They tried to take your dignity."
"They failed."
Later That Night
Someone was watching the house.
Daniel noticed the black sedan parked across the street around midnight.
The engine remained running.
Its headlights stayed off.
He quietly turned off every light in the living room.
Then walked upstairs.
Five minutes later...
The sedan slowly pulled away.
Daniel waited another minute.
Then drove after it.
Keeping three cars behind.
The sedan wound through Scottsdale's quiet neighborhoods before pulling into the parking lot of an aging office building.
The driver stepped out.
Even in the darkness, Daniel recognized him from the photograph his father had hidden years ago.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Measured movements.
Victor Hale.
He wasn't hiding anymore.
He was back.
Victor unlocked the office door and disappeared inside.
Daniel looked up at the building's sign.
Only one business occupied the entire second floor.
Hale Financial Consulting
Daniel took a photograph of the sign.
Another of Victor entering the building.
Then quietly drove away.
He didn't notice one thing.
From the second-floor window...
Victor Hale had seen him.
And as Daniel's truck disappeared into the night...
Victor calmly picked up his phone.
"He's asking questions," Victor said.
A voice answered from the other end.
"Then stop thinking of him as Lorraine's son."
Victor watched Daniel's taillights vanish into the darkness.
"Understood."
"What if he finds the ledger?"
The voice paused.
Then spoke four chilling words.
May you like
"Make sure he doesn't."
