CHAPTER 2: THE TRANSFER

Daniel didn't start the truck.
He stared at the notification until the screen dimmed.
URGENT: Transfer Request Pending Approval. Amount: $148,275.46
His pulse slowed instead of quickening.
That was the difference between panic and discipline.
Six years supervising construction crews had taught him one lesson that saved lives: when something collapsed, the worst mistake was rushing into the debris.
He reopened the banking app.
The transfer hadn't gone through.
It was waiting for secondary authorization.
Whoever submitted it expected him to be hundreds of miles away on a remote jobsite, too busy to notice.
Instead...
He was sitting less than ten minutes from home.
Daniel pressed the customer service number.
"Fraud Prevention Department, this is Melissa."
"My name is Daniel Carter. I need an immediate hold placed on every transfer request submitted today."
She verified his identity.
Then her keyboard began clicking rapidly.
"Mr. Carter..."
Her voice changed.
"There have actually been several attempts."
"Several?"
"Three this morning."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Read them."
"The first request was canceled after insufficient authorization."
"The second attempted to wire funds into an account ending in 4428."
"The third is the pending transfer you just received."
"Freeze everything."
"We already have."
"What about withdrawals?"
"I'm placing a complete restriction on all accounts until you appear in person with identification."
Daniel thanked her.
Before hanging up, she added one sentence that lingered in his mind.
"Whoever submitted these requests knew your account history unusually well."
Back at the house...
Lorraine was humming while arranging flowers in expensive crystal vases.
Brooke lounged on the sofa scrolling through luxury vacation packages.
Neither looked worried.
That meant they didn't know the transfer had failed.
Perfect.
Daniel walked in carrying a bakery box.
"I brought pie."
Brooke looked up immediately.
"What kind?"
"Pecan."
Her favorite.
She smiled for the first time since he'd arrived home.
"You remembered."
"Of course."
He cut generous slices.
Poured coffee.
Acted exactly like the son who trusted everyone.
Inside, every word felt like swallowing broken glass.
Lorraine casually asked, "Did you finish your errands?"
"Mostly."
"What were they?"
"Just paperwork."
He deliberately sounded bored.
"The company's lawyers love paperwork."
She relaxed.
"So the money's definitely coming?"
"As long as everything checks out."
Brooke leaned forward.
"When can we start planning?"
Daniel laughed.
"Planning what?"
"The lake house."
Lorraine shot Brooke a warning glance.
Too late.
Daniel caught it.
"What lake house?"
Brooke blinked.
"I..."
Lorraine interrupted smoothly.
"She means someday."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Right."
Someday.
That evening...
Natalie quietly entered the kitchen after everyone had gone upstairs.
Daniel slid an envelope across the table.
She opened it.
Inside were copies of forged signatures.
Her face went white.
"They forged your name..."
"For years."
"They could go to prison."
"If we prove everything."
Natalie looked toward the ceiling.
"They'll destroy evidence."
"I know."
"So what do we do?"
Daniel smiled.
"We make them preserve it themselves."
She frowned.
"I don't understand."
"They're greedy."
"They'll never throw away documents they think protect their money."
He reached into his backpack.
Inside sat three tiny devices.
Flash drives.
Digital voice recorders.
A miniature Wi-Fi backup hub.
Natalie stared.
"Where did those come from?"
"I stopped at an electronics store."
"You planned all this today?"
"I've planned construction projects worth fifty million dollars."
He looked toward the second floor.
"This house isn't any different."
The next morning...
Daniel announced breakfast for everyone.
Pancakes.
Bacon.
Fresh fruit.
Lorraine looked delighted.
"This reminds me of when you were little."
Daniel smiled.
"I've missed family."
Brooke grinned.
"We've missed you too."
Liar.
As they ate, Daniel placed a folder on the table.
"Good news."
Both women looked at it instantly.
"My lawyer simplified everything."
Lorraine's eyes sparkled.
"What is it?"
"Temporary ownership acknowledgments."
Brooke frowned.
"What's that?"
"Basically paperwork saying assets purchased with my employment income belong to me until the separation package clears."
Lorraine hesitated.
"Is that necessary?"
"The company insists."
Daniel shrugged.
"They're releasing almost a million dollars."
"I guess they want guarantees."
Silence.
Then Brooke asked the question Daniel expected.
"After the money arrives..."
"You'll sign everything back?"
Daniel laughed.
"Obviously."
That was enough.
Greed did the rest.
Lorraine picked up the pen.
"I suppose paperwork is paperwork."
Daniel watched her sign.
One page.
Then another.
Then another.
Brooke followed.
Neither actually read the documents.
If they had...
They would've noticed something interesting.
The papers weren't property transfers.
They were acknowledgments listing every major purchase made with Daniel's income.
Every car.
Every investment.
Every renovation.
Every luxury purchase.
Signed voluntarily.
Dated.
Witnessed.
By them.
Not legally decisive.
But devastating evidence.
Later that afternoon...
Daniel drove Natalie to her oncology appointment.
The waiting room was quiet.
Children colored in one corner.
An elderly couple held hands across from them.
Natalie squeezed Daniel's fingers.
"I'm scared."
"I know."
"What if it's spread?"
He looked into her eyes.
"Whatever happens..."
"You'll never face it alone again."
Tears rolled down her face.
The nurse called her name.
Daniel stood.
"I'm coming."
The nurse smiled gently.
"Of course."
Two hours later...
The oncologist entered carrying a folder.
Dr. Evelyn Harris sat down carefully.
"I've reviewed your biopsy."
Natalie stopped breathing.
Daniel held her hand tighter.
The doctor looked directly at them.
"The cancer is aggressive..."
Natalie's shoulders slumped.
"...but it's still treatable."
Hope flickered.
"We'll need surgery."
"Then chemotherapy."
"And because treatment was delayed..."
She paused.
"...we'll need additional scans."
Daniel asked quietly,
"If she'd come four months earlier..."
The doctor's expression answered before her words did.
"It would've been easier."
Natalie lowered her head.
Daniel felt rage bloom again.
Not the hot, reckless kind.
The cold kind.
The kind that never forgot.
When they arrived home...
The house was strangely quiet.
Too quiet.
Brooke's SUV was gone.
Lorraine wasn't inside.
Natalie noticed it first.
"The filing cabinet."
"What about it?"
"It was locked yesterday."
Now...
The drawer hung open.
Daniel rushed over.
Empty.
Every financial folder.
Every insurance file.
Every tax record.
Gone.
His jaw tightened.
"They know."
Natalie whispered,
"How?"
Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Mr. Carter?"
"This is Officer Ramirez with the Scottsdale Police Department."
Daniel's heart skipped.
"Yes?"
"We've received a report accusing you of financial abuse and threatening behavior toward your elderly mother."
Silence.
Officer Ramirez continued.
"She claims she's afraid to return home."
Daniel slowly closed his eyes.
They hadn't just begun destroying evidence.
They had struck first.
And if he made one wrong move now...
May you like
He could lose everything before exposing them.
