Chapter 15: The Last Heir

The warning lights beneath the Vale Estate pulsed like a heartbeat.

Red.

White.

Red.

White.

The computerized voice continued its relentless countdown.

CONSCIOUSNESS MIGRATION: 7%...

12%...

18%...

The neural activity surrounding Edward Vale's body slowly faded.

At the same time...

The brain scan beside Elias began to brighten.

Grant stared at the screen.

"...They're transferring him."

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

"They're waking him."

Theodore looked toward Sebastian.

"You knew this was possible?"

Sebastian answered honestly.

"I knew Grandfather believed it was."

"I never believed it worked."

Grant pointed at the monitor.

"It looks like it's working."

The room fell silent.

Then Theodore made his decision.

"I'm going."

Grant immediately objected.

"No."

"If they need me there..."

"...then keeping me away is exactly what they want."

Alexander looked at Sebastian.

"He's right."

Sebastian closed his eyes.

For years, he had made decisions to protect everyone around him.

Most of them had ended in disaster.

Finally...

He nodded.

"We go together."

5:02 A.M.

Four black SUVs raced through the rain toward the Vale Estate.

Grant drove.

Sebastian sat beside him.

Alexander monitored satellite images on a secure tablet.

Theodore sat in the back.

Silent.

Watching the dawn slowly brighten the horizon.

Sarah remained behind.

Her memories were still unstable.

Before they left, she had pressed the Founder Key into Theodore's hand.

"You'll know where it belongs."

He hadn't asked how she knew.

Beneath the Estate

The Curator stood beside Elias.

She looked almost peaceful.

"You've waited twenty-two years."

Elias smiled.

"I've waited much longer than that."

Edward Vale's voice echoed faintly through the speakers.

"The family..."

"...must continue."

The migration reached 41%.

5:41 A.M.

The convoy reached the gates.

The Vale Estate looked nothing like the home Theodore remembered.

Armored vehicles surrounded the mansion.

Private security teams guarded every entrance.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Yet...

As Theodore stepped from the SUV...

No one fired.

No one moved.

The guards simply watched.

Almost as if they had been expecting him.

The massive iron gates slowly opened by themselves.

Alexander whispered,

"They're inviting us in."

The front doors opened before anyone touched them.

Inside...

The mansion was empty.

No servants.

No guards.

No Curator.

Only silence.

Sebastian led them through familiar hallways until they reached the old library.

He stopped before a towering bookshelf.

Without speaking, Theodore stepped forward.

For reasons he couldn't explain...

He already knew which book to pull.

An old leather-bound volume.

The Odyssey.

He pulled it.

The bookshelf slid aside.

Alexander stared.

"You've never been here."

Theodore answered quietly,

"I know."

An elevator waited behind the hidden passage.

Its display illuminated automatically.

WELCOME HOME, THEODORE.

Grant looked at him.

"That's unsettling."

The elevator descended.

One hundred feet.

Two hundred.

Three hundred.

The doors opened.

The Archive stretched endlessly beneath them.

Hundreds of glass capsules.

Rows of silent machines.

An entire underground city built beneath the estate.

At the center...

The Curator waited.

Beside her stood Elias.

The migration display read:

83%

The Curator smiled.

"You came."

Theodore stepped forward.

"You wanted me here."

"I needed you here."

She looked older than before.

Not cruel.

Simply exhausted.

"Everything I've built..."

"...ends today."

Theodore frowned.

"I don't understand."

She looked toward Edward's chair.

"Because there can only be one heir."

Elias finally spoke.

His voice sounded strangely familiar.

Almost identical to Theodore's.

"You've lived my life."

Theodore stared.

"What?"

Elias smiled sadly.

"No."

"I've lived yours."

Theodore's head pounded.

Fragments of memories flashed through his mind.

A laboratory.

Fire.

A lullaby.

Someone carrying him through smoke.

He staggered.

Alexander caught him.

"Theodore!"

The Founder Key in Theodore's pocket suddenly became warm.

A hidden mechanism activated.

The brass medallion unfolded into a small crystalline device.

The Archive recognized it instantly.

A second screen illuminated.

FOUNDER OVERRIDE DETECTED

The Curator's expression changed for the first time.

"No..."

Edward's recorded voice echoed through the chamber.

If anyone activates the Founder Key...

...the Archive must offer a choice.

The migration stopped.

84%

A new interface appeared.

Two options.

CONTINUE TRANSFER

ERASE ARCHIVE

Grant whispered,

"...That's it?"

Sebastian looked at Theodore.

"The decision is yours."

The Curator stepped closer.

"If you erase the Archive..."

"...every preserved mind disappears forever."

Alexander quietly added,

"If you continue..."

"...Edward returns."

Theodore looked at Elias.

Then at Edward's lifeless body.

Then at Sebastian.

Alexander.

Grant.

He thought of Rosalie.

Still somewhere beyond the estate.

Still alive.

He remembered what she had whispered inside the coffin.

"The box..."

Not because it contained power.

Because it contained a choice.

Theodore slowly reached toward the console.

The Curator closed her eyes.

She already knew.

His finger rested above the screen.

Then...

He pressed the second option.

ERASE ARCHIVE

Every light inside the chamber went dark.

Then brilliant white flooded the room.

Thousands of monitors displayed names.

Faces.

Memories.

One by one...

They vanished.

Edward Vale's neural signal disappeared.

The migration halted forever.

Elias collapsed to his knees.

Not dead.

Simply free.

The Curator watched the screens fade.

A single tear rolled down her face.

After seventy years...

The Archive was gone.

The silence that followed felt different.

Not empty.

Peaceful.

For the first time in decades...

No machine beneath the estate remembered the dead.

Only the living did.

Somewhere above...

The first rays of sunrise touched the Vale Estate.

Rosalie emerged from the forest with Emma beside her.

She stopped at the hill overlooking the mansion.

The emergency lights had gone dark.

She smiled faintly.

"It's over."

Emma looked at her.

"Is it?"

Rosalie thought for a long moment.

Then took Theodore's hand as he walked toward her across the morning grass.

"No."

May you like

"It's finally our beginning."

THE END
