Chapter 11: The Confession Beneath the Ashes

Theodore stood frozen at the second-floor window.
Below, Sebastian Vale stepped out of the rain and into the circle of flashing police lights.
The masked operatives did not point their weapons at him.
They stepped aside.
Not in fear.
In respect.
Grant noticed it too.
"He's not their prisoner."
Theodore didn't answer.
His eyes never left Sebastian.
The building's front doors opened.
Sebastian walked inside alone.
No guards.
No visible weapon.
Only a small leather folder tucked beneath one arm.
His polished shoes echoed through the abandoned hallway.
One floor.
Then another.
Finally...
He appeared at the end of the corridor.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Sarah's breathing quickened.
She stared at Sebastian as if looking at someone she both recognized and feared.
Sebastian's eyes met hers first.
"I'm relieved you're alive."
Sarah whispered,
"...Father."
Theodore looked sharply toward her.
"What did you just call him?"
Sarah blinked.
"I..."
She frowned, as if awakening from a dream.
"I don't know."
Sebastian slowly approached.
Grant raised his pistol.
"Stop there."
Sebastian obeyed immediately.
"I didn't come here to fight."
Grant replied coldly,
"Everyone says that."
Sebastian placed the leather folder gently on the floor and stepped back.
"No tricks."
"No explosives."
"No trackers."
Theodore's voice carried years of trust and fresh betrayal all at once.
"Who are you?"
Sebastian looked at him for a long time.
Then quietly answered,
"I've been asking myself the same question."
Silence filled the corridor.
Rain tapped softly against broken windows.
Finally Sebastian spoke again.
"I lied."
Theodore laughed bitterly.
"That's an understatement."
"I lied about Alexander."
"I lied about Rosalie."
"I lied about Project Lazarus."
Another pause.
"But I never lied about loving either of you."
Grant remained unconvinced.
"Convenient."
Sebastian nodded.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
He looked directly at Theodore.
"I only expect you to survive."
Theodore's hands trembled.
"Then start talking."
Sebastian opened the leather folder.
Inside rested dozens of aged documents.
Birth records.
Medical files.
Family photographs.
At the very bottom...
A yellowed newspaper clipping.
The headline read:
VALE ESTATE FIRE CLAIMS TWELVE LIVES
Date:
May 18, 2004.
Theodore frowned.
"I've never seen this."
"You weren't supposed to."
Sebastian replied.
"The government sealed every copy."
He slid another photograph across the floor.
A large stone mansion.
Engulfed in flames.
Firefighters.
Police.
Ambulances.
Bodies covered by white sheets.
Sebastian pointed toward the image.
"Officially..."
"...twelve children died."
He looked at Theodore.
"They didn't."
Sarah whispered,
"The children..."
Sebastian nodded.
"Project Lazarus."
Grant crossed his arms.
"So the fire was staged?"
Sebastian closed his eyes.
"No."
"The fire was real."
Another silence.
This one heavier.
"I started it."
Theodore stared.
"...What?"
Sebastian didn't look away.
"I burned the laboratory."
"I destroyed every research file I could find."
"I thought..."
"...I had ended Lazarus forever."
Grant frowned.
"Then how is White Raven still operating?"
Sebastian's expression darkened.
"Because I failed."
He reached into the folder again.
This time...
He removed an old VHS cassette.
Across the label someone had written:
Lazarus Trial 001
Theodore looked confused.
"A videotape?"
Sebastian nodded.
"The only surviving recording."
Grant looked around.
"We don't exactly have a VCR."
Sebastian almost smiled.
"I anticipated that."
He reached into his coat and produced a small digital converter.
"Some habits die hard."
Minutes later...
The grainy recording flickered onto a portable monitor.
The timestamp read:
May 12, 2004.
A laboratory.
Rows of hospital beds.
Six children.
Machines.
Doctors.
One elderly woman supervising the room.
The Curator.
Only...
Much younger.
Standing beside her...
A man Theodore recognized instantly.
His grandfather.
Edward Vale.
Founder of the Vale family empire.
Theodore whispered,
"...Grandfather?"
Edward addressed the camera.
"Trial One begins today."
"Memory preservation protocol authorized."
The video skipped.
One child screamed.
Another convulsed violently.
Machines alarmed.
Doctors rushed between beds.
Then...
The camera settled on one little girl.
Dark brown hair.
Bright green eyes.
Rosalie.
She wasn't screaming.
She wasn't convulsing.
She was...
Smiling.
The Curator looked astonished.
She leaned toward Edward.
Though the audio was distorted...
One sentence remained clear.
"She retained everything."
The recording ended abruptly.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Theodore whispered,
"What did she retain?"
Sebastian answered.
"Her memories."
Grant frowned.
"From childhood?"
Sebastian looked at him.
"No."
A beat.
"From before."
Theodore felt cold.
"...Before what?"
Sebastian answered so quietly that, for a moment, Theodore thought he'd imagined it.
"Before her first death."
The room fell silent.
Grant shook his head.
"No."
Sebastian continued.
"Rosalie wasn't the first successful memory transfer."
He looked toward the rain outside.
"She was..."
"...the first successful second transfer."
The implication landed like a physical blow.
Theodore slowly sat down.
"You're telling me..."
"...Rosalie has lived before?"
Sebastian nodded once.
"Yes."
A sudden buzzing sound interrupted the moment.
Grant looked toward the window.
Tiny lights.
Dozens of them.
Approaching through the rain.
Not helicopters.
Not drones.
Hundreds of palm-sized quadcopters.
Each carrying a small blinking red light.
Sebastian's expression changed instantly.
"We're out of time."
Grant asked,
"What are those?"
Sebastian answered with one word.
"Harvesters."
The first drone smashed through the broken window.
Then another.
Then twenty more.
They weren't armed with bullets.
Instead, each carried a thin injector needle beneath its frame.
Sebastian shoved Theodore to the ground.
"Don't let them touch your neck!"
One drone dove toward Sarah.
Another toward Grant.
The corridor erupted into chaos as the machines swarmed like a metallic flock.
Outside, somewhere beyond the storm, a calm female voice spoke into a microphone:
"Commence Collection."
And beneath the Vale Estate, hidden behind seventy years of reinforced concrete and forgotten history...
A steel vault that had never been opened began unlocking itself.
One lock.
Then another.
Then another.
May you like
Deep inside the darkness...
Something awakened.
