Chapter 14: The Other Theodore

No one in the room breathed.
Grant zoomed in on the satellite image until the pixels began to break apart.
It didn't matter.
The face remained unmistakable.
Theodore.
Standing beneath the Vale Estate.
Walking calmly toward Edward Vale's chamber.
Theodore looked down at his own hands.
Then back at the screen.
"...Who is that?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
Alexander was the first to recover.
"Enhance the footage."
Grant typed rapidly.
The image sharpened just enough to reveal details.
The stranger wore a charcoal suit.
No restraints.
No guards.
The White Raven operatives stepped aside as he passed.
Not because they feared him.
Because they recognized him.
The man stopped before Edward Vale's chair.
Then...
He smiled.
Exactly the same crooked smile Theodore had seen in his own childhood photographs.
Grant whispered,
"This isn't a disguise."
Sebastian stared at the screen in disbelief.
"...No."
Alexander slowly turned toward him.
"You knew."
Sebastian shook his head.
"I suspected..."
"But I prayed I was wrong."
Theodore grabbed Sebastian by the front of his coat.
"Tell me!"
Sebastian didn't resist.
Twenty years of secrets seemed to weigh more heavily than Theodore's grip.
"There were three children."
His voice cracked for the first time.
"You."
"Alexander."
"And..."
He closed his eyes.
"...Subject Zero."
Silence.
Grant frowned.
"Zero?"
Alexander whispered,
"The prototype."
Sebastian nodded.
"Project Lazarus officially began with Subject One."
"That was a lie."
"There was a child before all of us."
Theodore slowly released Sebastian.
"Who?"
Sebastian looked directly into his eyes.
"You."
The room became perfectly still.
Grant frowned.
"That makes no sense."
Sebastian answered quietly.
"Theodore..."
"...you aren't the original."
Alexander lowered his head.
"I knew it..."
Theodore's heartbeat thundered in his ears.
"...What did you say?"
Sebastian swallowed.
"The child downstairs..."
"...is the original Theodore."
"You..."
"...are the second."
"No."
Theodore backed away.
"No."
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
Sebastian opened another file from the leather folder.
Inside lay a faded hospital record.
Three infant footprints.
Three identification bracelets.
Alexander Vale
Theodore Vale
Patient X
Then another document.
A laboratory transfer order.
Date:
May 15, 2004
Subject:
Emergency Continuity Transfer
Recipient:
Infant B
Grant stared.
"Infant B..."
Sebastian nodded.
"That's Theodore."
Theodore laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because nothing felt real anymore.
"So..."
"...I'm not me?"
Alexander answered softly.
"No."
"You are Theodore."
"But..."
"...not the first body."
Silence swallowed the room.
At the Vale Estate...
The other Theodore entered the Archive Chamber.
The Curator stood waiting.
She looked older now.
More fragile.
Yet her eyes still held absolute conviction.
"You've come."
The man smiled.
"I always do."
Edward Vale's neural monitor brightened.
The inactive body remained motionless.
But a synthetic voice emerged from the chair.
"Theodore."
The younger man bowed his head.
"Grandfather."
Back in Manhattan...
Sarah suddenly gasped.
Another memory surfaced.
She grabbed Theodore's arm.
"No!"
Everyone looked at her.
"I remember the transfer!"
Grant leaned closer.
"What happened?"
Sarah's breathing became uneven.
"There wasn't only one child."
"There were twins."
Sebastian's eyes widened.
"No..."
Sarah nodded.
"Theodore..."
"...had a twin brother."
Alexander slowly looked toward the satellite image.
Then toward Theodore standing beside him.
Then back again.
Understanding spread across his face.
"Oh God..."
Grant frowned.
"What?"
Alexander answered in a whisper.
"We've been counting wrong."
"There weren't three children."
He looked directly at Theodore.
"There were four."
Silence.
Then Sarah finished the memory.
"The original Theodore died during the first transfer."
She pointed toward the man in the vault.
"That..."
"...isn't Theodore."
Everyone stared at the screen.
Sarah's voice trembled.
"I know him."
Grant asked quietly,
"Who is he?"
Sarah closed her eyes.
One final memory returned.
A laboratory.
Edward Vale smiling.
The Curator writing in a notebook.
A newborn infant opening his eyes.
Edward's voice echoed through her memory.
"The body failed."
"Continue with the backup."
"Name him... Elias."
Sarah opened her eyes.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
She looked at Theodore.
"The man beneath the estate..."
"...isn't your brother."
A long pause.
"He's Elias."
"The first successful vessel."
At that exact moment...
The satellite feed flickered.
The man in the vault slowly turned his head.
He looked directly into the security camera.
Then...
He smiled.
As though he could see Theodore watching him from miles away.
He raised one hand.
Placed it gently on Edward Vale's shoulder.
The neural monitor surged.
Warning lights flashed throughout the underground complex.
A computerized voice echoed across every corridor beneath the estate:
ARCHIVE TRANSFER INITIATED
HOST CONFIRMATION: ELIAS
CONSCIOUSNESS MIGRATION: 3%...
Edward Vale's body remained dead.
May you like
But the neural activity on the monitor...
...began disappearing.
