Chapter 12: The Vault Beneath the Vale Estate

The first drone struck the wall beside Theodore's head.
Its needle pierced plaster instead of flesh.
A faint hiss escaped from the injector.
Clear liquid dripped onto the floor.
The concrete immediately began to smoke.
Grant fired once.
The drone exploded into fragments.
Another replaced it instantly.
"There are too many!" he shouted.
Sebastian didn't answer.
He ripped a heavy fire blanket from the hallway emergency cabinet and threw it over Theodore.
"Cover your face!"
Theodore barely reacted before three drones buried their needles into the thick fabric.
Each injector discharged harmlessly.
Sebastian grabbed a metal chair and swung it through the swarm.
The corridor filled with sparks and shattered rotors.
Sarah stood frozen.
One drone hovered directly in front of her.
It didn't attack.
Instead...
It projected a tiny blue light across her eyes.
A calm mechanical voice emerged from the drone.
Identity confirmed.
Subject Three.
Recovery authorized.
Sarah clutched her head.
"No..."
Fragments of memories flashed through her mind.
A laboratory.
Children laughing.
The smell of smoke.
A boy crying her name.
Then...
Darkness.
Grant noticed her collapse.
"Sarah!"
She looked up, tears streaming down her face.
"I remember..."
"What?"
"I wasn't a police officer first."
Grant frowned.
"What are you saying?"
"I was..."
She struggled to breathe.
"...one of the children."
Theodore's attention snapped toward her.
"What children?"
Sarah whispered,
"Project Lazarus."
Sebastian didn't seem surprised.
"They've restored part of her memory."
Grant stared.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
Another drone darted toward Theodore.
Before it reached him...
A sharp crack echoed from outside.
The drone burst apart.
Then another.
And another.
Precision shots.
Every bullet destroyed a drone with impossible accuracy.
Theodore looked through the shattered window.
A lone figure stood across the street on the roof of a neighboring building.
Holding a suppressed precision rifle.
Alexander.
He lowered the rifle just enough for Theodore to recognize him.
Then spoke through a radio.
"You're welcome."
Sebastian muttered under his breath,
"You always did enjoy dramatic entrances."
Alexander smiled faintly.
"Still complaining, brother?"
Within two minutes the drone swarm retreated.
The surviving machines disappeared into the rain as suddenly as they had arrived.
Silence returned.
Only the buzzing of damaged electronics remained.
Grant slowly lowered his weapon.
"I hate this family."
Alexander laughed.
"Most people do."
Minutes later...
All five of them gathered around the portable monitor.
The atmosphere was tense.
Nobody trusted anyone completely.
Not Grant.
Not Sarah.
Certainly not the two Vale brothers.
Theodore finally broke the silence.
"The vault."
Sebastian nodded.
"It has opened."
"How?"
"I didn't open it."
Alexander answered quietly,
"The Curator did."
Grant frowned.
"Why now?"
Alexander looked directly at Theodore.
"Because you survived."
Nobody understood.
Alexander continued.
"The vault has biometric safeguards."
"It only unlocks under one condition."
Theodore asked,
"Which is?"
Alexander's answer chilled the room.
"When the final heir returns."
All eyes turned toward Theodore.
He shook his head.
"No."
Alexander nodded.
"Yes."
"Theodore..."
"...you aren't Sebastian's nephew."
Silence.
"You are Edward Vale's last biological grandson."
Theodore stared.
"That's impossible."
"My father..."
Alexander interrupted gently.
"The man who raised you loved you."
"He just wasn't your biological father."
Sebastian closed his eyes.
"I wanted to tell you."
"When?"
Theodore demanded.
"After Rosalie was safe."
"You mean after she was buried alive?"
Sebastian had no answer.
Grant stepped between them.
"Enough."
He looked at Alexander.
"Why tell him now?"
Alexander smiled sadly.
"Because the vault recognizes blood."
He unfolded an old blueprint.
The Vale Estate.
But beneath the mansion...
Another structure.
Far larger.
An underground complex extending hundreds of feet beneath the property.
Laboratories.
Archives.
Cryogenic chambers.
A central room labeled only:
THE ARCHIVE
Grant stared.
"This place is enormous."
Sebastian nodded.
"My grandfather built it during the Cold War."
"For memory research?"
"No."
Alexander answered.
"For continuity."
Theodore looked exhausted.
"I still don't understand what that means."
Alexander drew a slow breath.
"The Curator believes civilizations collapse because knowledge dies with people."
"So she built a system..."
"...to preserve minds."
Grant frowned.
"By copying memories?"
Alexander nodded.
"At first."
"Then something changed."
"What?"
Alexander's smile disappeared.
"She stopped asking permission."
Silence.
Sarah suddenly reached into her jacket.
Everyone tensed.
Instead of a weapon...
She removed a tiny brass medallion.
Its surface bore an unfamiliar crest.
A tree.
Its roots wrapped around a human brain.
Sebastian's face turned pale.
"No..."
Alexander whispered,
"She still has it."
Theodore looked between them.
"What is it?"
Sebastian answered quietly.
"The Founder Key."
"The key to the vault?"
Alexander shook his head.
"Worse."
"The key to the Archive Core."
Grant looked confused.
"So what's inside?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Finally Sebastian spoke.
"Every successful memory."
Theodore frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Sebastian met his eyes.
"It means..."
"...if the Archive is intact..."
"...then thousands of people are still alive."
A long silence followed.
Theodore finally whispered,
"In computers?"
Alexander slowly shook his head.
"No."
He looked toward the rain-soaked skyline.
"...In other people."
At that exact moment...
Deep beneath the Vale Estate...
The last steel door finished unlocking.
Hydraulic pistons groaned.
Ancient mechanisms turned for the first time in twenty-two years.
The vault slowly opened.
Inside stood a circular chamber lined with hundreds of glass capsules.
Each capsule contained a single chair.
Most were empty.
Except one.
In the center of the room.
A lone elderly man sat motionless, connected to a web of cables.
His eyes were closed.
His chest barely rose.
A monitor beside him displayed one name:
EDWARD VALE
STATUS: BIOLOGICALLY DECEASED
Below it...

A second line flashed in green.
