Chapter 4 - Elena woke beneath fluorescent hospital lights. The first person she saw was Detective Ruiz.

“How bad?”
Ruiz stood beside the bed.
“Bruised ribs. Mild concussion. Your baby is stable.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Relief washed over her.
“Good.”
Ruiz studied her.
“You knew she was going to push you.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Elena looked toward the window.
“Vanessa had tried twice before.”
Ruiz frowned.
“Why didn't you report it?”
“Because she never touched me in a way that couldn't be explained.”
Ruiz understood.
A glass mysteriously knocked over.
A staircase railing suddenly loosened.
A car brake behaving strangely.
“Someone was testing methods.”
Elena nodded.
“So I started testing her.”
She pulled a folder from beneath her pillow.
Ruiz opened it.
Photographs.
Bank transfers.
Phone records.
Property documents.
Medical records.
Photographs of Vanessa meeting Dr. Cross.
Ruiz stared.
“You've been investigating your husband.”
“I've been investigating my husband's affair.”
She reached for another photograph.
Adrian and Vanessa leaving a hotel.
Another.
Vanessa meeting a lawyer.
Another.
A copy of a life insurance policy.
Ruiz stopped.
“This policy is for twenty million dollars.”
Elena nodded.
“Adrian bought it seven months ago.”
“Seven months?”
“The same month Vanessa moved into the guest wing.”
Ruiz looked up.
“Did Adrian know?”
“I don't know.”
Ruiz turned another page.
A handwritten note had been attached.
The baby changes everything.
Ruiz looked at Elena.
“What does that mean?”
Elena's expression hardened.
“My baby is the heir.”
“To what?”
Elena stared at him.
“The Howard family trust.”
Ruiz leaned back.
“So this isn't just about an affair.”
“No.”
Elena opened the last envelope.
Inside was a copy of a legal document.
“Three weeks before my pregnancy was announced, Adrian changed the inheritance structure.”
Ruiz read it.
“The estate transfers to the child upon your husband's death?”
“Yes.”
“And if the child dies?”
Elena's eyes darkened.
“The trust goes to Vanessa.”
Ruiz slowly lowered the document.
“That's motive.”
“It gets worse.”
Elena took out a final page.
A photograph of Vanessa meeting an older man outside a private club.
Ruiz recognized him.
“Victor Kane.”
Elena nodded.
“He owns half the private security companies in the city.”
“And the other half?”
“Belong to men who disappear people.”
Ruiz looked at her.
“You think Vanessa hired Kane?”
“I know she did.”
“How?”
Elena pulled out her phone.
She opened a recording.
Vanessa's voice played.
“I don't care how you do it. The baby cannot be born.”
Ruiz listened in silence.
Then another voice.
Male.
“You want the wife dead or the child?”
Vanessa answered:
“Both.”
The recording ended.
Ruiz stared at Elena.
“This could put her away for life.”
“Not yet.”
“Why not?”
Elena looked toward the hospital door.
“Because that's only the first layer.”
“What is the second?”
She whispered:
“My husband.”
Ruiz stiffened.
“You think Adrian is involved?”
Elena didn't answer.
Instead, she pointed toward the recording.
“Listen to the last three seconds.”
Ruiz replayed it.
Behind Vanessa's voice, faintly, a door opened.
Then footsteps.
A man's voice.
Not Victor Kane.
Not Dr. Cross.
Someone else.
Ruiz increased the volume.
The voice became clearer.
“Vanessa, you promised me she would be gone tonight.”
Ruiz stared at Elena.
“Who is that?”
Elena looked him directly in the eyes.
“My husband's father.”
Ruiz froze.
“But he's dead.”
Elena nodded.
May you like
“He died six years ago.”
And suddenly, the entire case changed.
