Chapter 11 - The chapel stood at the edge of the Howard estate.Nobody used it anymore.

The stained-glass windows had been boarded over.
The altar was covered in dust.
Ruiz arrived with Elena, Adrian, and several officers.
The floor beneath the altar had been forced open.
A hidden staircase descended into darkness.
At the bottom was a steel vault.
The door stood open.
Empty.
Except for a single black box.
Elena picked it up.
Inside were tapes.
Dozens.
Each labeled with a date.
Ruiz played the first.
A man's voice.
Michael Vale.
“If you're hearing this, I'm dead.”
Elena's breath caught.
The recording continued.
“Charles Howard believes the inheritance belongs to him.”
Static.
“He doesn't know the truth.”
Elena leaned closer.
“The first Howard heir was never born into the Howard family.”
She looked at Adrian.
The recording continued.
“She married into it.”
Elena's heart raced.
“Her name was Isabella Vale.”
Her mother.
Ruiz stared at Elena.
“Your mother was the original heir.”
The tape continued.
“She gave birth to a daughter.”
Silence.
Then:
“Elena.”
Elena covered her mouth.
“My father knew.”
“Yes.”
The next line changed everything.
“She also gave birth to a son.”
Everyone froze.
Ruiz turned toward Elena.
“You have a brother?”
Her mother began crying.
“No.”
Elena stared.
The voice continued.
“The boy was taken.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Taken by who?”
The tape stopped.
A second recording began automatically.
Charles's voice.
“I will raise him as my own.”
Adrian stepped backward.
“No.”
Charles looked at him from across the room.
“Yes.”
Adrian's face became pale.
“You stole me.”
“I saved you.”
“You erased my identity.”
“I gave you a name.”
Adrian's voice shook.
“I was your bargaining chip.”
Charles smiled.
“You were my insurance.”
Elena stared between them.
“My brother.”
Adrian looked at her.
For the first time, their marriage felt like the final piece of a cruel puzzle.
Their families had been connected long before they met.
Their relationship had been manipulated before either of them knew.
And Vanessa had been recruited because she had access to Adrian.
Ruiz turned to her.
“Where is Vanessa?”
Nobody knew.
Then the chapel doors slammed shut.
A gunshot echoed.
One officer fell.
Everyone ducked.
A shadow moved behind the stained glass.
Ruiz returned fire.
“Stay down!”
Elena crouched beside Adrian.
He looked at her.
“I didn't know.”
“I know.”
“You believe me?”
Elena hesitated.
“Yes.”
That single word broke something inside him.
Then a scream came from the vault.
Mrs. Howard was inside.
She stumbled out clutching her chest.
“Elena!”
Elena rushed toward her despite everything.
“What?”
Mrs. Howard pointed toward the floor.
“She took the box.”
“Who?”
“Vanessa.”
Ruiz looked at the empty vault.
“But Vanessa wasn't here.”
Mrs. Howard shook her head.
“She never needed to be.”
A phone rang.
Everyone stared at Elena.
Her phone was vibrating.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Vanessa's voice whispered:
“Come alone.”
Elena's blood went cold.
“Where?”
“The nursery.”
“Why?”
A pause.
“Because there's something you never knew about your baby.”
The call ended.
Ruiz immediately shook his head.
“Don't go.”
Elena looked at him.
“I have to.”
“You're bait.”
She stared at the dark hallway leading back to the mansion.
“I know.”
May you like
Then she walked toward it.
And behind her, Adrian quietly picked up a gun.
