Chapter 14 - The mansion finally stopped shaking. The sniper had vanished.

The police surrounded the estate.
Every surviving suspect had been secured.
Charles was handcuffed.
Mrs. Howard was under arrest.
Vanessa was being treated for her gunshot wound.
Dr. Cross had been captured in the east wing.
Only one person remained unaccounted for.
Elena's mother.
She was gone.
Her hospital room was empty.
The bed was still warm.
Ruiz looked at Elena.
“She knew this was coming.”
Elena couldn't respond.
They found her mother's coat near the chapel.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Come to the old lake house. Alone.
Elena stared at it.
Ruiz shook his head.
“No.”
“She'll hurt herself.”
“Or she'll hurt you.”
“I have to hear the truth.”
Ruiz looked at her.
“Then I'm coming with you.”
They arrived at the lake house just before dawn.
Fog covered the water.
The house stood empty.
Except for a light in the upstairs window.
Elena entered.
Her mother sat by the fireplace.
No weapon.
No guards.
Just an old woman with tired eyes.
“You came.”
Elena stood across from her.
“You tried to kill me.”
Her mother shook her head.
“No.”
“You knew Vanessa would push me.”
“Yes.”
“You let it happen.”
“Yes.”
Elena's voice broke.
“You almost killed my baby.”
Her mother closed her eyes.
“I knew your baby would survive.”
“How could you know that?”
“I didn't.”
Silence.
That answer hurt more than a lie.
Elena sat opposite her.
“Tell me everything.”
Her mother finally did.
Seventeen years ago, Charles stole the family trust.
He kidnapped her newborn son.
That son was Adrian.
Then he manipulated her into silence.
Years later, Elena married Adrian without knowing they were connected by blood through Charles.
Vanessa was recruited by the trust to destroy Elena.
Dr. Cross altered medical records.
Mrs. Howard controlled the estate.
Charles controlled the criminal side.
And Elena's mother had spent years trying to dismantle the system from inside.
“But the first murder?” Elena asked.
Her mother looked down.
“Michael Vale.”
“You ordered it.”
“I ordered someone to scare him.”
“He died.”
Her mother's voice broke.
“I couldn't stop it.”
“Who killed him?”
“Charles.”
Elena stared.
“Then why did Nora say you did?”
“Because Nora doesn't know everything.”
She reached into a drawer.
Inside was a final envelope.
“Elena, this is the truth no one else knows.”
Elena opened it.
Inside was a DNA report.
Her eyes widened.
The biological father of her unborn baby was...
Michael Vale.
Elena stared at the page.
“That means...”
Her mother nodded.
“Your baby is the last true heir.”
Elena's hands trembled.
“But Michael died before I met Adrian.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Her mother stared at the fire.
“He froze embryos before his death.”
Elena couldn't breathe.
“You're saying my pregnancy was planned?”
“No.”
Her mother looked at her.
“You were implanted without your knowledge.”
The room went silent.
Elena's world broke apart again.
“Who did it?”
Her mother whispered:
“Your husband.”
Elena closed her eyes.
The answer was Adrian.
Again.
Always Adrian.
Then her phone rang.
Ruiz.
She answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Elena, get out of the house.”
“Why?”
“We recovered the footage from the staircase.”
She froze.
“What footage?”
“Your fall.”
Ruiz's voice dropped.
“You weren't pushed.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
“What?”
“You jumped.”
She stared into the fire.
“What?”
Ruiz continued.
“You deliberately threw yourself down the stairs.”
Elena's face went white.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“And the camera?”
“We recovered the missing frame.”
A pause.
“You weren't trying to fake an attack.”
“You were trying to trigger the trap.”
Elena slowly looked at her mother.
Her mother smiled.
And Elena finally understood.
May you like
She had not been the victim.
She had been the bait.
