Chapter 1 - The impact sounded like a gunshot.Elena Howard’s body struck the marble floor at the bottom of the staircase, and the entire mansion went silent.

For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Vanessa screamed.
“Oh my God!”
She rushed down two steps, stopped herself as though terrified of getting too close, and covered her mouth with both hands.
Mrs. Howard, the household matriarch, stood frozen near the dining room entrance.
“Mrs. Howard...” Vanessa sobbed. “I didn’t mean to.”
Her voice trembled perfectly.
She pointed toward Elena.
“She came at me first. I only pushed her away because I was scared.”
Mrs. Howard stared at the woman lying motionless on the floor.
Elena’s dark hair had fallen across her face. One hand was curled protectively against her stomach.
The sight was horrifying.
She was seven months pregnant.
“Someone call an ambulance!” Mrs. Howard shouted.
Vanessa immediately began crying harder.
“I told her to stay away from me. I warned her. She has been threatening me for weeks.”
The staff gathered at the edges of the room.
None of them dared speak.
Vanessa looked around desperately.
“Please believe me.”
Then Elena moved.
Barely.
Her fingers slipped beneath the edge of her cardigan.
For a fraction of a second, Vanessa noticed.
But Elena went still again.
Vanessa frowned.
She had expected screaming.
She had expected panic.
Instead, Elena looked almost peaceful.
That frightened her.
Then Mrs. Howard knelt beside Elena.
“Elena?”
No answer.
“Elena, can you hear me?”
Elena’s eyelids fluttered.
Her lips parted.
A weak breath escaped.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Elena...”
Then Elena’s eyes opened.
For the briefest instant, their gazes met.
Vanessa saw something she could not explain.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Elena knew exactly what had happened.
And somehow, she looked calm.
Then her eyes closed again.
Vanessa swallowed.
Mrs. Howard shouted for the driver to bring the car around.
But Elena’s fingers were already moving beneath the cardigan.
Her phone screen lit up.
She pressed a contact.
Detective Ruiz.
The call connected.
Elena covered the speaker with her palm.
Her voice was barely audible.
“It happened.”
Ruiz immediately understood.
“Are you safe?”
“No.”
“Can you speak?”
“Yes.”
“Is the suspect still there?”
Elena opened her eyes slightly.
Vanessa stood three meters away.
“Yes.”
Ruiz’s voice became colder.
“Stay conscious.”
Elena swallowed.
“Send the team.”
The call ended.
She slipped the phone away just as Mrs. Howard turned toward her.
“Who were you calling?”
Elena closed her eyes.
No answer.
Vanessa watched her carefully.
Then something metallic rolled across the floor.
A small gold button.
Vanessa’s face changed.
She touched her blouse.
One button was missing.
Elena had grabbed it during the struggle.
A tiny piece of evidence.
Vanessa stared at it.
Then at Elena.
For the first time that night, Vanessa realized something terrifying.
Elena had not simply survived the fall.
She had been waiting for it.
Minutes later, sirens screamed outside.
Detective Daniel Ruiz entered the mansion with two officers.
He looked at Elena.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at the staircase.
His expression hardened.
“Lock the doors.”
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“What?”
Ruiz looked directly at her.
“Nobody leaves this house.”

And for the first time, Vanessa’s perfect performance cracked.
Because the trap had already closed.
