Chapter 17 - The House That RememberedThey returned to the Alcázar estate after midnight.

The house looked exactly as Sebastián remembered.
Tall windows.
Stone staircase.
Family portraits.
The same chandelier his mother had insisted came from Europe.
Yet now every room felt poisoned.
Valeria walked beside him.
"Your mother raised you here?"
"Yes."
"Then she probably hid the truth here too."
Grant remained outside with federal agents.
Sebastián and Valeria entered alone.
The front door closed behind them.
No lights.
No servants.
No guards.
They walked toward Sebastián's father's study.
The room smelled of old paper.
Sebastián opened the desk.
Nothing.
Valeria touched the bookshelf.
"Here."
She pulled one book.
A hidden panel opened.
Inside was a cassette recorder.
Sebastián pressed play.
His father's voice filled the room.
"If you're hearing this, then the Vault has failed."
Sebastián closed his eyes.
"I knew they would come for my grandson."
A pause.
"I also knew Rebeca would eventually betray me."
Sebastián looked at Valeria.
The recording continued.
"The only person capable of ending Project Origin is not my son."
The tape crackled.
"It is Valeria."
Valeria stopped breathing.
"Because her mother carries the original authorization."
A hidden door opened.
Behind it was a staircase.
They descended.
At the bottom was a room filled with photographs.
Sebastián recognized one immediately.
Valeria's mother.
Standing beside a machine.
Pregnant.
Valeria touched the photograph.
"She was part of this."
Sebastián saw another photograph.
His father.
Rebeca.
Valeria's mother.
Together.
Years before he was born.
Then another.
Two babies.
Then another.
A young Sebastián.
A young Adrián.
And one more child.
Sebastián stared.
"There were three."
Valeria looked at the photograph.
"No."
She stepped closer.
"There were four."
She pointed.
One baby had been crossed out.
A note beside it read:
FAILED PROTOTYPE.
Sebastián felt sick.
"Who was the fourth?"
Valeria read the name.
"Luis."
"Who is Luis?"
Before she could answer, a voice came from the darkness.
"I am."
They turned.
An old man stepped into the light.
Valeria dropped the photograph.
"My father."
He smiled.
"My little girl."
She ran to him.
For the first time, Sebastián saw Valeria collapse into someone's arms.
Her father held her tightly.
Then he looked at Sebastián.
"You have no idea what they did to you."
Sebastián stared.
"Tell me."
The old man shook his head.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because someone is listening."
He pointed toward the ceiling.
A tiny red light blinked.
A camera.
Sebastián pulled his weapon.
Too late.
The house lights came on.
Federal agents outside began shouting.
Then the windows shattered.
Gunmen opened fire.
Sebastián pulled Valeria and her father to the floor.
Grant shouted through the radio.
"GET OUT!"
Smoke filled the room.
The old man grabbed Sebastián's arm.
"There is a tunnel under the study."
"Where does it lead?"
"To the cemetery."
Sebastián stared.
"The family cemetery?"
The old man nodded.
"Your grandfather built it."
"Why?"
"Because the dead were easier to control than the living."
They crawled through the tunnel.
Behind them, the house burned.
At the far end, they emerged beside the family mausoleum.
The old man unlocked a hidden door.
Inside was one final room.
At the center stood a coffin.
Sebastián approached.
His father's name was engraved on it.
But when the lid opened, there was no body.
Only a computer.
The screen activated.
PROJECT ORIGIN: FINAL PHASE
Then a voice spoke.
Not his father's.
Not Vega's.
A woman's.
Valeria froze.
She knew it immediately.
Her mother's voice.
"Valeria."
A pause.
"Your father lied to you."
The screen displayed one sentence.
THE BABY IS NOT THE KEY.
May you like
Then another.
HE IS THE HOST.
