Chapter 11 - The WallThey reached the nursery under armed escort.

The room was strangely untouched.

Pink curtains.

Small crib.

Soft lights.

A mural of clouds on the wall.

No blood.

No bullet holes.

Nothing that suggested the chaos outside.

Valeria walked toward the far corner.

She touched a painted cloud.

Three times.

A section of wall clicked.

A panel opened.

Inside was a steel box.

Grant stared.

"How did you know?"

"My mother taught me."

Sebastián watched her.

"You said she died when you were ten."

"She taught me before that."

"What did she teach you?"

Valeria touched the box.

"How to hide things from powerful people."

She entered a combination.

The box opened.

Inside was a second ledger.

Black.

Not red.

Sebastián frowned.

"I thought it was supposed to be red."

Valeria shook her head.

"The Red Ledger is a copy."

She lifted the black book.

"This is the original."

Grant opened it.

The first page contained a list of names.

The second contained bank accounts.

The third contained photographs.

The fourth contained death dates.

Sebastián felt sick.

"These people were murdered."

Grant nodded.

"Every single one."

Valeria turned pages.

Then stopped.

A photograph showed a young woman.

Her mother.

Beside her was Sebastián's father.

And between them was a baby.

Grant stared.

"That's Adrián."

Sebastián looked closer.

On the next page was a medical notation.

TRANSFERRED AT BIRTH.

Sebastián turned another page.

A note:

SECOND CHILD RETAINED FOR REPLACEMENT.

Grant's expression hardened.

"Replacement for what?"

Valeria read the next line.

Her hands trembled.

"Presidential succession."

Everyone froze.

Sebastián stared.

"The network controls political succession."

"Not directly," Valeria said.

"Then how?"

"They manufacture leverage."

Grant looked at the ledger.

"Blackmail."

"Yes."

"Every leader who reaches power becomes dependent."

Sebastián turned a page.

There were names of judges.

Prosecutors.

Governors.

Then one final section.

CHILDREN OF AUTHORIZED FAMILIES.

Sebastián's name appeared.

Then Adrián's.

Then Valeria's.

Then the unborn child's code.

Grant whispered:

"Primary Asset."

Sebastián looked at Valeria.

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"How long?"

She lowered her eyes.

"Since the day I met you."

He stepped backward.

"You chose me."

"No."

"Did you marry me because of the ledger?"

"No."

"Did you?"

Valeria started crying.

"I married you because I loved you."

"That's not what I asked."

She whispered:

"I also needed to know whether your family was responsible for my mother's death."

Sebastián stared.

The betrayal cut deeper than anything his mother had done.

Before he could respond, the hospital alarm sounded.

A red light flashed.

Grant checked his radio.

"All units report a breach."

"Where?"

"Nursery."

Sebastián looked at the door.

Nobody had entered.

Then the baby monitor came alive.

A voice whispered:

"Sebastián."

He recognized it.

His father's voice.

"Your wife isn't who she says she is."

Valeria froze.

The speaker continued.

"She was assigned to you before she was born."

Sebastián turned toward her.

"Is that true?"

Valeria could not answer.

The door opened.

His father stood there.

Bloodied.

Holding a knife.

He looked at Valeria.

"You finally found the original."

May you like

Then he looked at his grandson.

"And now they know exactly where you are."
