Chapter 1 - Six Words on the ScreenSebastián Alcázar stared at his mother.

For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Rebeca's fingers tightened around Octavio's phone.
Six words glowed on the screen.
THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY ALREADY HAS THE FILES.
The sentence was so simple that Sebastián almost dismissed it.
Almost.
But he had spent his entire life watching his mother control every room she entered. She could silence a boardroom with one look. She could convince bankers to move millions with a phone call. She could turn an angry journalist into an apologetic guest over dinner.
Now, for the first time, he saw fear.
Not irritation.
Not anger.
Fear.
"Who sent that?" Sebastián asked.
Octavio reached for the phone.
Rebeca pulled it away.
"Nonsense," she said. "Someone is trying to scare us."
Valeria laughed softly from the hospital bed.
It was not the laugh of a frightened woman.
It was the laugh of someone who had finally stopped waiting to be believed.
"You heard the message," she said. "The district attorney has everything."
Dr. Salgado's face had gone pale.
Sebastián noticed.
He turned toward him.
"Doctor?"
Salgado swallowed.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You were here," Sebastián said.
"I came because your mother asked me to evaluate Valeria."
"You signed the psychiatric papers."
"For her safety."
"You disabled the emergency call button."
Silence.
The doctor looked toward Rebeca.
That tiny movement was enough.
Sebastián's stomach dropped.
"What did you do?"
Rebeca stepped forward.
"Sebastián, think carefully. Your wife is unstable. She has become obsessed with accusing people. She believes everyone is conspiring against her."
Valeria looked at her husband.
"Ask her why she brought custody papers to a delivery room."
Sebastián turned.
His mother's expression did not change.
"Ask her," Valeria continued, "why the papers were prepared six days before my due date."
Octavio immediately interrupted.
"That means nothing."
Valeria's eyes sharpened.
"It means everything."
She reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small black device.
Everyone froze.
"A transmitter?" Sebastián whispered.
"A backup recorder."
She pressed a button.
The room filled with Rebeca's own voice.
"Sign them, or we declare you mentally unfit."
Then Octavio.
"Once the baby is born, the child belongs in this family's hands."
Then Dr. Salgado.
"We can increase the dosage if she refuses."
Sebastián stared at the speaker.
The recording continued.
Then came the sound of screaming.
His wife's screaming.
Sebastián's face drained of color.
He looked at the bruises on Valeria's legs.
They were no longer abstract marks.
They were evidence.
Rebeca lunged toward the device.
Sebastián stepped between them.
"Don't touch her."
His mother stopped.
"Move."
"No."
Her eyes hardened.
"Sebastián."
"You told me she was imagining this."
"She is manipulating you."
"Then why are you shaking?"
Rebeca went still.
A knock came at the door.
Everyone turned.
Two men entered.
Neither wore a police uniform.
The first showed a badge.
"Sebastián Alcázar?"
"Yes."
"My name is Daniel Mercer. Assistant District Attorney."
The second man closed the door behind him.
Mercer looked directly at Rebeca.
"Mrs. Alcázar, you need to put the phone down."
Rebeca slowly lowered it.
"You have no jurisdiction here."
Mercer smiled without warmth.
"We have more jurisdiction than you think."
Octavio stepped forward.
"On what grounds?"
Mercer held up a warrant.
"Medical coercion, unlawful confinement, evidence tampering, conspiracy to interfere with custody proceedings, and attempted falsification of medical records."
Dr. Salgado whispered something under his breath.
Mercer heard it.
"You should probably call your attorney, Doctor."
Octavio's eyes narrowed.
"Who authorized this?"
Mercer glanced at Valeria.
"She did."
Sebastián looked at his wife.
"How?"
Valeria closed her eyes for a moment.
"When I was still working forensic cases, I learned something."
"What?"
"People like your mother don't get caught because they make mistakes."
She opened her eyes.
"They get caught because they believe everyone else is too afraid to challenge them."
Mercer stepped toward Rebeca.
"You're under investigation."
Rebeca suddenly smiled.
It was the same smile she wore at family dinners.
The same smile she used when she knew something everyone else did not.
"You think this ends with me?"
Mercer stopped.
"What does that mean?"
Rebeca looked at Sebastián.
Then at Valeria.
Then she whispered five words that made Valeria's expression collapse.
"Ask her where your father went."
Sebastián froze.
"My father?"
Rebeca smiled again.
"He did not abandon us."
Valeria's hand went instinctively to her stomach.
Rebeca leaned closer.
"He was silenced."
The room went dead quiet.
Then Octavio's phone buzzed again.
This time, the message had only four words.
HE'S ALIVE. COME ALONE.
May you like
And Sebastián knew the sender.
Because it was his father's old number.
