Chapter 7 - The Mother Who Came Back“Don't move.”

Claire's mother held Adrian at gunpoint.
Claire stared at her.
“Mama?”
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Come to me.”
Claire couldn't move.
For eighteen years she'd carried a memory of her mother.
A voice.
A perfume.
A hand brushing her hair.
And now that woman was standing three feet away.
Older.
Scarred.
Alive.
Claire whispered, “You're really here.”
Her mother nodded.
“My baby.”
Claire ran to her.
They collided in an embrace.
For one second, nothing else existed.
Then Claire pulled back.
“Why?”
Her mother's expression broke.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I wanted you to think that.”
“Why?”
“Because everyone around you was compromised.”
Claire glanced at Adrian.
“He says he protected me.”
Her mother shook her head.
“He did.”
Claire stared.
“You trust him?”
“I trust him with my life.”
“Then why are you pointing a gun at him?”
Her mother lowered it.
“Because I don't trust the other half of his family.”
Claire looked confused.
Her mother stepped closer.
“Adrian's father was one of the founders of Halcyon.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“My father left before I knew what it was.”
“You believe that?”
“I have evidence.”
Her mother laughed bitterly.
“Evidence can be manufactured.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Then tell her the truth.”
Claire turned.
Adrian continued.
“Tell her why Jonathan asked me to protect her.”
Her mother looked at him.
Then she sighed.
“Because your father knew Halcyon would come for Claire.”
Claire’s voice trembled.
“Why me?”
Her mother answered quietly.
“Because you are the only legal heir.”
“To what?”
“Whitmore International.”
Claire frowned.
“I already inherited Whitmore.”
“No.”
Her mother shook her head.
“You inherited the public companies.”
She reached into her coat and pulled out a black envelope.
“This is the private inheritance.”
Claire opened it.
Inside was a document bearing her father's signature.
He had created a hidden trust.
The value stunned her.
Billions.
But money wasn't the most shocking part.
The trust controlled something called THE MERIDIAN NETWORK.
“What is this?”
“A global intelligence network.”
Claire stared.
“My father owned that?”
“Not owned.”
Her mother looked toward Adrian.
“Protected.”
Adrian said nothing.
Claire suddenly understood.
All those years.
All those secret documents.
All those people watching her.
It wasn't only about money.
Her father had hidden something powerful.
Something people would kill for.
Before Claire could read more, footsteps sounded upstairs.
Her mother's expression changed.
“They found us.”
“Who?”
“The people who never stopped hunting me.”
Adrian immediately moved toward the staircase.
“How many?”
“Enough.”
Gunfire erupted.
The hidden room shook.
Adrian fired upward.
His men returned fire.
Claire's mother grabbed her.
“Listen to me.”
“What?”
“There is a second key.”
Claire stared.
“I only have one.”
“I know.”
Her mother touched Claire's pendant.
“The other is inside Adrian.”
Claire looked at him.
“What?”
Her mother whispered:
“His blood.”
Adrian's expression went cold.
“My blood?”
“Your father and Adrian's mother made an agreement. The vault opens only when both family lines are present.”
Claire stared at Adrian.
“Then you knew.”
“I suspected.”
She almost laughed.
“You keep using that word.”
A bullet struck the wall.
Adrian pulled Claire down.
Her mother shouted, “Run!”
They raced through a hidden tunnel.
At the end was a steel door.
Adrian entered a code.
Claire looked behind them.
Her mother was still running.
Then a gunshot echoed.
Her mother stumbled.
“Mama!”
Claire tried to go back.
Adrian grabbed her.
“No!”
Her mother's eyes met hers.
She raised a bloodied hand.
“Don't look back.”
Then the tunnel door slammed shut.
Claire screamed.
Adrian held her as she collapsed.
For the first time, his control broke.
He whispered into her hair.
“I'll get her back.”
Claire looked at him through tears.
“You better.”
She pressed the documents against his chest.
“Because now I know what she was hiding.”
“What?”
Claire looked down at the final page.
There was one sentence.
THE MERIDIAN NETWORK IS CONTROLLED BY THE LAST SURVIVING WHITMORE.
Claire looked up.
“I’m not the last Whitmore.”
Adrian's eyes widened.
May you like
Claire whispered:
“Victor is.”
