Chapter 14 - The Last BetrayalThe underground facility was beneath an abandoned courthouse.

Claire, Adrian, and Jonathan entered through a service tunnel.

Every door opened automatically.

That frightened Claire more than locked doors would have.

Victor wanted them inside.

They found Evelyn tied to a chair.

“Mom!”

Claire rushed forward.

Adrian caught her.

“Wait.”

He saw the explosives first.

Thirty seconds on the timer.

Claire's blood froze.

Victor's voice echoed through the speakers.

“You always were too emotional, Claire.”

He appeared on a screen.

“Come closer.”

Claire stared at him.

“What do you want?”

“You.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Take me.”

Victor laughed.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Claire must choose.”

The screen displayed two doors.

Behind one was Evelyn.

Behind the other was Adrian.

Only one door could open.

Claire stared.

Victor continued.

“Your father taught you that power is control.”

“He taught me people matter.”

Victor laughed.

“Let's test that.”

Jonathan shouted:

“Claire, don't listen to him!”

Adrian looked at her.

“Whatever happens, don't choose me.”

She turned.

“What?”

“Don't let him manipulate you.”

Victor smiled.

“You see? That's why I hated him.”

Claire ignored him.

She studied the room.

The explosives.

The doors.

The cameras.

Then she saw it.

A tiny symbol.

The same wolf.

The same rose.

Two interlocking circles.

A mechanism.

She remembered the church.

The key.

The bloodline.

The network.

This wasn't merely a choice.

It was a test.

Claire took Adrian's hand.

“Trust me.”

He looked at her.

“I do.”

She pressed the combined key into the floor.

Nothing happened.

Victor laughed.

“You failed.”

“No.”

Claire cut her palm with a piece of broken metal.

Blood touched the key.

Adrian understood.

He did the same.

Their blood mixed.

The mechanism activated.

The walls opened.

The countdown stopped.

Victor's smile disappeared.

“No.”

Claire looked at the camera.

“You made one mistake.”

“What?”

“You assumed the network belonged to my bloodline.”

She smiled.

“It belongs to two.”

Adrian stepped beside her.

“Whitmore and Voss.”

The system activated.

Every server in the facility went dark.

Then every file Victor had hidden for decades appeared on public screens around the world.

Names.

Bank accounts.

Murder records.

Government conspiracies.

Halcyon collapsed in real time.

Victor stared at the screens.

“You can't.”

Claire looked at him.

“You lost.”

Victor pulled a gun.

Jonathan moved first.

He stepped between them.

Victor fired.

Jonathan fell.

Claire screamed.

Adrian shot Victor.

Victor collapsed.

The room went silent.

Claire ran to her father.

“Dad!”

Jonathan looked at her.

He smiled faintly.

“I knew you'd be stronger than us.”

Blood spread across his shirt.

“No.”

Claire pressed her hands against the wound.

“Stay with me.”

Jonathan looked at Adrian.

“Take care of her.”

Adrian nodded.

“I will.”

Jonathan's eyes closed.

Claire sobbed.

Then Adrian pulled her into his arms.

Outside, sirens approached.

Halcyon was finished.

But Claire knew her life would never be the same.

As they left the facility, she saw an envelope on the floor.

Her name was written across it.

She picked it up.

Inside was one final photograph.

Her father.

Her mother.

Adrian's mother.

Victor.

All standing together twenty-three years earlier.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

THERE WAS ONE MORE FOUNDER.

Claire looked at Adrian.

“Who?”

He read the message.

His face went pale.

“I don't know.”

The envelope contained one final name.

Claire whispered:

“Sarah Voss.”

Adrian froze.

His mother.

The woman everyone believed had died.

May you like

The woman who had supposedly betrayed them.

Still alive.
